Chapter Thirty-One: Opening Up Part 1
Thanks to me accidentally killing Haruspex in France, Silas and I have reached a dead end in our pursuit of Sathariel. Silas spends every waking minute obsessing over how to find him, while I have found alternate ways of occupying my time. I’ve been spending my days in my greenhouse working on my latest concoction. I began working on this particular cocktail a year ago, and after months of painstaking effort, I am finally on the brink of perfecting it. There are an infinite amount of uses for most plants in the world. Even the most deadly ones can be used to create life-changing medicines. The trick is to find the balance. Killing someone isn’t hard, but mastering the use of poison is truly an art form. With my combined degrees in biology – with a strong focus on botany – and chemistry, not only am I capable of controlling how people die, but the rate at which they die and in some cases I can even dictate the symptoms. Biochemistry is like a scientific orchestra, and I am the conduc

Chapter Thirty-Two: Opening Up Part 2
My jaw drops in surprise. “Get out of here, are you for real?” “I’m the fourth generation on my father’s side,” he says with proud glee. “My mother is an assassin too, but she didn’t get into the business until after she married my father.” “What the fuck are the chances? What are your parents names? Maybe I’ve heard of them,” I say, eagerly pulling up another seat. “Well, my mother goes by the codename Ajna and my father goes by the codename Akephaloi.” I shove him in astonishment, “Shut up! Your father is Akephaloi?!” “You’ve heard of him?” he says happily. “Are you kidding? Who hasn’t? That time he took out that Cambodian death squad. Oh my God, my grandmother was gushing about it for weeks. So savagely brutal, especially putting their heads on pikes – which I personally thought was a fabulous touch. I know we do a lot of fucked up shit, but it’s those moments when we get to use these skills to bring justice to people who would otherwise never have it, that makes what we do re

Chapter Thirty-Three: Tension Part 1
I smile as Silas saunters around to the driver’s side of the car, opening my door and extending his hand to me. I see behaving like a gentleman on our first date was not part of his performance. With an impressed smile, I place my freshly manicured hand in his and step out of the car. I take a moment to drink in the delectable sight of him, committing every bulge and dip of his perfect body to memory as I do almost every time I look at him now. Silas is the first man I’ve ever known to wear a corseted vest, and now that I have seen it, all other attire pales in comparison. I never thought a fully clothed man could be so erotic, but it’s the greatest discovery of my lifetime. Now that I mention it, I realise all our sexual encounters so far have been clothed, and I’m not complaining. There’s something so carnal about craving someone so much you have to have them then and there that not even the confines of clothes can stop you. Between me, myself, and I, I’m getting hot just thinking

Chapter Thirty-Four: Tension Part 2
In no time at all, a waiter comes over with our drinks and two menus. Silas lifts his glass, holding it in the air. “A toast.” I raise my glass. “And what are we toasting?” “To working together and to a real first date. May neither of us die when it’s over,” he says with a Chesire grin. I chuckle, clinking my glass with his, and then we both take a sip. I place my glass down and lift my menu. “Do you think about that night?” “All the time,” he admits, opening his menu. “Do you think we were holding back?” I ask him. He glances up at me, silence stretching out between us as he appears deep in thought. I know I just asked him a loaded question, but I’m not afraid of his answer. If he says no, and that he did everything he could to try and end my life, it changes nothing. “I honestly don’t. You didn’t hesitate to stab and poison me, and it was only pure luck that saved my life. I shot you and the only thing that prevented me from nailing a perfect shot was the pain I was in. You d

Chapter Thirty-Five: Tension Part 3
Our meals are full of banter and stories that in any other establishment would have nearby patrons turning white in fear and disgust while calling the authorities. It’s strange having a partner in crime, but it’s nice having someone who isn’t family that I can confide in regarding all the gory details of my life, one who won’t be repulsed or demand I be committed. We’re both in the middle of our mains when I notice a familiar face exit the backroom. Suddenly picking Ambrosia feels like a colossally bad idea. What the fuck is Castor doing here? “Something wrong?” Silas asks with concern. Of course, he noticed a shift in my mood. Maybe Castor won’t notice me. “Not exactly…” I answer evasively. It was stupid to hope Castor wouldn’t notice me. His hazel eyes zero in on me from across the room, lighting up as soon as he sees me. He immediately walks over and as he reaches me, he bends down, placing a kiss on my cheek. “It’s so good to see you, Dasha. I didn’t realise you were still in

Chapter Thirty-Six: Not So Friendly Warning Part 1
First thing this morning I made a call to Athena. After what Marios said at the restaurant last night, I tossed and turned most of the night, worrying about what she must be thinking. Thankfully, Dimitris had informed her that I was busy on assignment, so she knew I hadn’t abandoned her. Instead, the sweet thing was worried about me. Hearing the relief in her voice touched me deeply, but at the same time had me itching to inflict pain on someone. Athena may have grown up in the mafia, surrounded by killers, but she is one of the purest souls among us. Her parents did all they could to protect her innocence, and in a way, she hasn't lost it, to which I'm glad. She still refuses to leave her room, but she’s been more open to small talks with her parents, so I’m happy to hear she’s making some progress. Any step forward, no matter how small, is a success in my book. I’ve promised to see her when this Sathariel business is dealt with and while she was sad, she understood. Silas and I sti

Chapter Thirty-Seven: Not So Friendly Warning Part 2
I walk out, shutting the door behind me as he continues to scream like an escaped mental patient. I make my way to the car, get in and start driving, my fists clutching the steering wheel so hard I feel like it’s about to snap under my palms. For the first time in my life I feel sick to my stomach and as angry as I am, there’s a sadness underneath for something lost. I don’t trust many people, but I trusted Castor. I trusted him with my life, as do my father and mother. We were never romantic, but that didn’t mean I didn’t see him as a friend. For twenty-three years he was a confidant and in my early years he was my protector, and now it feels like a lie. To see him turn so quickly, all because he saw me having a meal with another man is… it’s fucking insane. I will wear the blame for crossing the line from platonic friends to something sexual. I took that step, and I have no one to blame but myself for that, but I’m ashamed I never saw this coming. I’m observant in every other aspec

Chapter Thirty-Eight: Daddy's Little Girl Pt 1
As I help Silas put the groceries in the trunk of my car, a sudden look of realisation comes over his face. “Everything alright?” I ask. “Yeah. I just realised I’ve never done something so domestic before,” he says in mild astonishment. I chuckle. “You’ve never gone grocery shopping? Don’t tell me you’re a criminal who still needs mummy to take care of him,” I taunt. “Keep that up and I’ll find better uses for that mouth of yours,” he warns, squeezing my ass firmly. I take hold of his shirt and yank him towards me, looking into his emerald eyes as I lean in until my lips are a breath away from his. “You can fuck my mouth till it’s swollen shut, but that won’t stop me from teasing you.” My voice is a sultry whisper as I tease the seam of his lips with my tongue. He takes a firm grip of my hips and presses me against the trunk of my car, his lips descending on mine and his tongue invading my mouth, licking and teasing every crevice as if to give me a sample of things to come. I sit

Chapter Thirty-Nine: Daddy's Little Girl Pt 2
Lamps are knocked over, sofa cushions are strewn about and torn-up clothes are scattered about like the debris left behind after a tornado. Silas steps in front of me, his expression now looking like an attack dog seeking a target. He places the groceries down, walks over and picks up a few tattered pieces of clothing to examine them. “These are all mine,” he remarks. I look at him in surprise. I begin to wander around, checking every place in my apartment where I keep a weapon stashed, to find them all untouched. Silas follows the trail of tattered clothes to his room while I make my way to mine, a sinking feeling settling in my stomach. As I walk to my bedroom, I notice the whiteboard where I had organised all our research on Sathariel, has been knocked over with the papers tossed around without a care. I enter my room and immediately feel bile travelling up my throat. My bedroom looks even worse than the rest of my apartment. My bedsheets have been torn to shreds, my clothes thro

Chapter Forty: Daddy's Little Girl Pt 3
“Hold your fire!” I order them, each one glancing between me and the fight behind me, confused as to how to proceed. My father rises to his feet, but I can’t bring myself to look at him. The shame I’m now feeling won’t allow me to. “ENOUGH!” my father bellows. “Tell them!” Silas snarls as I hear the sound of a fist meeting flesh. “Tell them what you did, you sick perverted fuck!” I glance up just as my father signals for his men to intervene. They put their guns away, pull Silas off Castor and help Castor to his feet, but he's quick to shake them off. He glares daggers at Silas, spitting a wad of blood at Silas’s feet. The amount of contempt and disgust in the action has me now wanting to go and throw in a few punches myself. “Someone better tell me what the fuck is going on right this minute,” my father orders, his posture tall and imposing, his voice full of authority and his eyes burning with anger and curiosity. “This is the son of a bitch who shot Dasha in Russia,” Castor sp
