ATTICUS POV Running has never been more frustrating. Normally the wind in our hair is the most relaxing feeling in the world, but today we can't get our legs to move fast enough. Logan and the men are about a half mile behind us, but we haven't slowed down. Logan wasn't able to uphold his high speed, but we were. The Alphas and warriors that joined us fell in behind us without a single word. After another hour of pushing our body to the breaking point, we reach the smoking city built for peace. Scents of blood, fear, and silver instantly assault our nose. We come to a halt so that everyone can catch up and Logan shifts when he reaches our side. "I'm not too familiar with the layout, but I believe the committee building is that way," Logan states while pointing East.We nod before looking at the other Alphas still in wolf form. We know we can handle the enemy near our mate, but other wolves who live in Outcast are probably trapped in the bombed buildings. The majority of our force

ATTICUS POV "Return to your old packs or go to mine, Pack Kincaid. Go! Anyone who can move on their own! Go," we yell as another portion of the apartment building crumples. Too many wolves have stayed to assist in the evacuation. They can be injured. They should leave. We can handle this.A small group of maybe thirty bolts for the treeline half a mile from us and we refocus on the piece of wall we are holding up. We can still hear Logan's faint grunting as he pulls another wolf from the rubble, but he has been under for much longer than we thought he would be. For the past twenty minutes, we have pulled out several injured wolves from the rubble and none have taken him this long."Logan, what's the issue," we growl as our biceps bulge from the strain. "They are unconscious. I am trying to drag them out without hurting them further," he calls back and we growl in frustration. We look over our shoulder and spot a warrior pointing toward the treeline for some more wolves who don't

ATTICUS POV We look over the group of ex-agents slowly. Their heads are bowed so we can't lock eyes with anyone, but we can still read so many emotions coming off of them. The main one is anxious. Our eyes linger on Layla for a longer moment than the others. She seems calmer since we killed Raymond's murderer, but the bags under her eyes tell us she still isn't sleeping. She isn't someone we deem dangerous anymore, but we also don't trust her 100% like we did before. "I want each of you to swear loyalty to Pack Kincaid so you can link one another in wolf form. Seven males and three females isn't a large warrior force, but it is more than what the pack had. Kincaid will need time to rebuild," we say smoothly, and the agent that guarded Karina in Outcast looks up. "My King, some of the older wolf couples we gained from Outcast are warriors. They can join our force as well," he says and we nod while thinking it over. That's true. The many wolves who fled Outcast have varied ranks.

KARINA POV Just as Atticus's hands grab my butt a knock sounds on his office door and we break apart. He growls a little in disappointment which makes me smile. I'm disappointed too, but the pack has a lot going on today. We can love on one another tonight or any other day when there isn't so much going on. "We have our whole lives together," I whisper to the moping hunk and he smiles. His fangs go on full display, but I don't focus on those for long. The look of absolute happiness in his eyes captivates me completely and the person at the door knocks again. "My King, the new members are gathered and waiting," a voice calls from the other side, but Atticus doesn't move. He seems lost in the happy image I created by saying we have the rest of our lives. His dark brown eyes are locked on mine and our hands are on each other's arms as we just stare at one another. The rest of the world seems to drift away and I smile back at him. When he rejected me as his mate almost

ATTICUS POVRated R We sigh as we close the door to our office. After thirty-two calls all the Alphas have been informed of our new orders and plans. Some had reservations about moving, but none of them back-talked or gave us attitude. We did agree to give everyone a month before making them send workers to begin the project. That gives us a month to find the perfect secluded area to build on. We scratch our head as we travel down the hallway to our room. It's late so waking up Karina to revisit our idea from early probably isn't a good idea. She is most likely tucked in her own bed. How we got so lucky to call her ours is still astounding to us. After watching her from afar, rejecting her, and our father hurting her we never would have imagined we would be mated. Fate has an amazing way of coming around full circle. We open our door with our head down. Exhaustion is beginning to hit. The stress and adrenaline of the day are gone. Knowing everyone is on board is refresh

KARINA POV I hum quietly as I add another knickknack to the box. I have never been happier. After last night Atticus and I are on a whole new level. We not only opened our bodies, but we submitted to one another. He listened to what I needed and we grew as a couple. Our past trauma isn't holding us back. Rupert and his men might have left scars, but scars lighten over time. If Atticus and I continue to help one another I know that we will grow. "Someone is happy," Mom says from behind me. "I am. We decided to share a room so I am transferring my stuff to his," I reply with a glance over my shoulder. I smile brightly at the sight of her. I wasn't expecting to see her today, but I welcome the visit. I have missed being around my parents. They didn't get to see me growing up after my rejection and becoming the woman I am today. The woman who doesn't just smile through everything. Mom beams back at me before walking over and picking up another one of my treasures. "W

KARINA POV Adrenaline and hate rush through my veins as Layla gets within inches of my mom, but my feet remain frozen to the ground.None of my ideas give us a good outcome. We don't have time to shift into wolf form Layla is upon us. Shifting now would risk my mom's life. We can't fight her in hand-to-hand combat. I never took training seriously. Maybe I can push Mom out of the way and she can escape to find help. Suddenly Mom grabs Layla in a tight bear hug that pins Layla's arms to her side. The angry female snarls. "Hurry! Karina shift! Link Atticus," Mom screams, and Althea bursts forth without my consent. She immediately snaps at Layla's waist and Mom falls to the side to get out of the way. Layla shifts into her gray wolf and snaps at our throat, but Althea is quick on her feet. She jumps to the side and I smirk from within our mind. I might not be a fighter, but Althea is. Our relationship might not be a friendly one, but I can rely on her. She knew what needed t

ATTICUS POV Relief settles inside our gut as we head back out to confirm our plan with the warriors. Karina and her mother are safe and they were able to handle the threat themselves. But why there was a threat at all is still bothering us. "Where is she," we demand as we step outside to find a handful of waiting warriors. "The new cells. We kept her away from the long-term prisoners," one of the ex-agents answers and we nod. We begin to head in that direction and the warriors fall into step behind us. When we reach the new building we take a moment to look over the basic wooden prison structure. Unlike Thurman's pack, we decided not to have silver bars or beds installed. Instead, the prisoners have a tiny bit of silver mixed into their food. Keeping building costs down was essential. When we have taken in the building we enter and head straight for her scent. Finding her is easy, but the emotions that hit us when we see her again aren't. She went against her oa

ATTICUS POV 6 months laterWe sigh before setting down another profile. Going through every wolf's file in the world has been an arduous time and we have been doing it for three days already. This morning we finally decided we would need help with this task if we are going to ever finish it."Glad you invited me to help you," Logan asks with a smirk on his face from across our desk. "Yes," we respond before letting our face fall into our hands. Our eyes literally hurt from reading so much. We haven't ever been this bored with learning. Every file is the same. It lists the person's name, age, rank, appearance, pack, and family. It explains a brief significant history if the person has one and who they are mated to if the person is mated. "Well, I think it's a good idea to evaluate everyone before we all move. It allows you to pick out which packs should live next door to one another. I've already made a pile of packs that seem to have a lot of mating pairs in common," Logan says a

KARINA POV As Atticus rounds his desk and approaches me with concern clearly on his face, my control snaps. Tears I have been keeping at bay escape down my face and I begin to sob just as he pulls me against his chest."I am sorry. I am sorry I sprang that decision on you. We should have talked about it as equals first," Atticus apologizes with sincerity in his voice, but that only makes me cry harder. How can he not smell the change in my scent? Logan realized the difference right away. But Atticus seems oblivious to the clear change. How can he not get it? He broke my heart when he told me he didn't want the small pup growing inside of me. I thought he was bringing up having pups because he smelled the change in the air, but I was wrong... or maybe it was his way of telling me he didn't want it. Maybe he does know... No Atticus isn't like that. He is just being thick."You don't understand," I sob and his arms only tighten. Pain and regret are a living pulse within our bond now.
