You’re my wife!
He’s fine. Lucien is Lucien, you know?” Audrey played with the spoon in her teacup. The metal clinked against the ceramic cup. It rang like windchimes swinging in a summer breeze. “Listen, I know it isn’t my business, but you seem to be, I don’t know, sad. You should be an excited newlywed or something, but you aren’t. You’ve been sullen and upset ever since he announced your engagement. And it gotten worse after you got married. Is everything okay?” “It’s sweet of you to be concerned,” Audrey answered, still playing with her spoon and cup. “But everything is fine. We’re fine.” Her tone was final, and Damian knew not to press the matter further. “I know you have a driver, but I’d like to take you home. May I?”Audrey smiled at his sweetness. “That would be nice. Let me let Brad know.” Audrey called Brad and let him know that she had alternative transportation to go home. He wished her a good night and took off for the evening. On the drive towards her home, Audrey and Dami

Sick and fragile.
Audrey nodded and they rushed out of the apartment. The silence between them was severe. The intensity of their argument still hung between them, but there were more pressing matters. When they arrived at the hospital, they were escorted by a nurse to his room. “He’s fragile right now,” she informed them. “Normally, I wouldn’t let anyone in to see a patient in such delicate condition, but he insisted that I let his son and daughter-in-law in to see him as soon as they arrived. Please, it’s this way.” She led them into his room and left to give them privacy.Lucien collapsed to his knees at Gary’s bedside and took one of his hands. Audrey stood on the other side of the bed. As close to Gary as she could be while still being as far from Lucien as possible. “Dad,” Lucien’s voice wavered. “What happened?” “Such a fuss,”Gary’s voice was weak.”I’m sick, Lucien. And I think I need to accept my fate now.” “Don’t talk like that,” Lucien said. “You’ll be better soon, and then we can

Don’t leave me
“Dad, I spoke with the doctor. He said that your heart condition has gotten really bad. Why didn’t you say anything?” Lucien went from an enraged, wounded man to a scared, and caring son.Lucien hated to show any weakness, but Audrey knew there was one weakness he could never hide. And it was how much he loved his father. “What good would that have done?” “I could have taken care of you.” “I know you would have. But you were getting married, and then you were dealing with that emergency in Italy. No, my boy. You have priorities.” Before Lucien could protest, someone walked in. Audrey recognized him. Lucien noticed that someone had caught Audrey’s attention, and followed her eye line. “First your wife, now you, It’s as if you two came here to bid my dad farewell. He’s not dying.” Julius ignored his outburst. “Gary,” he gestured at Gary. “You look better.” “I feel better,”Gary answered. “I can take care of my father very well. You two don’t need to be here.” “I asked t

Grief
“Promise me,Lucien. I need to know that you’ll be okay.” “I promise.”Gary passed away that night. He died peacefully in his sleep with his loving son by his side.Audrey left the room to give Lucien privacy, but she could hear his silent sobs through the door as he grieved.Gary had been everything to him.And now he had to navigate the world alone. The hospital came to take Gary away, and Audrey peaked in the room.Lucien hadn’t moved from his spot. “Lucien,” Audrey called gently. “I don’t know if I want you to stay or go,” he answered. “I can wait out here until you’re ready to go.” “He made me promise I’d be okay. Why would he want me to lie to him like that?” Lucien looked away from her. He couldn’t stand for her to see him like that, but he wasn’t in his rational mind. He had never known sadness like this. He was sad when he lost his mother, but he was young. His father raised him, and was the only constant he ever had. “He wasn’t supposed to leave me,” Lucien’s voice

His safe place.
There was nothing Audrey could do for him. He refused to cry anymore, or talk about it. He was drowning in his grief and she couldn’t help. All she could do was to be present for him. “Thank you for coming,” Lucien said to another guest without looking up. “Lucien.”Audrey placed her hand on his chest. She could feel his heart hammering away, but his face gave nothing away. “That was the last guest. We have to go inside.” “Right,” he answered. There was no strength in his voice. Lucien didn’t move.Audrey took his hand and led him inside. Paparazzi snapped photos of them as they walked towards the front. Audrey hated that they were there. They were nothing but predatory, opportunistic buzzards that thrived off of people’s private suffering. But she knew she couldn’t do anything about them. She wouldn’t cause a scene at Gary’s funeral.Lucien and Audrey took their place and the service began. People around them cried. Some reached over to them, lamenting about Gary’s loss.Audre

Come home.
Audrey opened her social media and the first article she saw was;“Lucien Reynolds seen after his father’s funeral with mystery woman.” “No,” Audrey whispered. “He wouldn’t.” “Oh, he would. And he did! Recognize the bitch in that picture? Take a good look.” Audrey looked at the photo and felt all of her blood drain from her face. It was Mia.Of course. Of course, he was with Mia. He told her he needed to be alone. But it was so he could be with Mia. Why did she let this continue to happen to her? “Audrey, you just say the word and I will end him,”Tracy continued. “Girl, I swear to God, I will end him so hard that no one will even know he existed.” “I may take you up on that. Let me call you back.” “I’ll be here,” Tracy promised and hung up.Audrey sank into the couch and let her head fall into her hands. She grabbed one of the cushions and screamed into it. “I am such an idiot!” she yelled into it. Rage, betrayal, and jealousy churned within the pit of her stomach making

This is war.
The next week was tense. Lucien eventually came back, but didn’t speak to her. Things did not go the way either of them wanted after Gary’s funeral. And he would hate to see them this way now.Lucien launched himself into work. He was now the CEO of Reynolds Industries and so he was busy restructuring the company.Audrey busied herself with a job search and caring for her father. They did everything they could to avoid each other. Anything was better than confronting their real feelings. The atmosphere was cold, and distant between them. Neither of them wanted to be the first one to break. Towards the end of the week, the design contest results were posted on the competition’s website. With everything that had been happening, she forgot all about it. To her surprise, she passed.“Dear Mrs Reynolds, on behalf of the International Association of Architecture, we would like to formally congratulate you. You have placed third in this year’s Design Conference Competition. Your passion an

Wrapped around a woman.
Damian and Audrey went to a different restaurant. Audrey was embarrassed by what Damian had witnessed. She and Lucien were married for such a short time. They should be in love, but now Damian saw for himself. “I’m sorry you had to see that,” she said after they were seated. “I owe you an explanation. Lucien and I are married, but it’s complicated. Mia is like, the love of his life. She left him a while back, but now she wants him again. So, of course he is falling all over himself for her. I can’t tell you much more than that, but I can tell you that we aren’t in love. But we also aren’t in an open relationship either. It’s… convoluted,” she finished, looking down from him. “That’s a lot,” Damian said. “We don’t have to talk about that. Just know that I’m here for you.” “Thank you. I appreciate that. Honestly, I don’t know why you continued to put up with me.”“Audrey, please. You are more than your problems. And don’t worry. We really don’t have to talk about anything that mak

A gift for you.
A response came quickly.“We need to talk. Meet me on Saturday. The Hotel Belmont, Room 719. 3pm.“ “No.”Audrey typed back.Mia was crazy if she thinks she would go see her. “You better come. It’s about Lucien and his family” Audrey didn’t reply.‘This is stupid.’she thought.Mia was not in her corner and nothing good could possibly come from meeting up with her. But her curiosity was getting the better of her.Nobody knew about Lucien and his family better than Mia.And she really wanted to know why he wasn’t in good terms with his aunt. “Fuck,” she groaned. “Why is this my life?” Whenever she let herself believe things might work out between them, she’d get another sign. “Listen to the universe, Audrey,” she said to herself. “It’s obviously trying to talk to you.” The water stopped running. Audrey closed her eyes and pretended to be asleep. She felt Lucien get into bed. “Audrey?” he called softly. She didn’t answer. She was feeling warm and fuzzy after her shower, but no

So romantic.
The room was bathed in a fresh, floral scent, and sensual golden glow. A small table in the center of the room held a glass of wine and two crystal glasses.Audrey walked in, and looked around. It was the most beautiful scene she had ever seen. But she was so confused. “There’s no way this is for me,” she said aloud without realizing. “It is,” Lucien said, hugging her from behind. “Why?” “For a lot of reasons,” His voice was soft, but commanding. “This is so romantic,” she whispered. “I’ve not been fair to you,” he said. “I’ve been trying to explain, but I know things wouldn’t have gotten so bad if I had just spoken up in the first place.” He turned her around so she could face him. “I need you to know that I didn’t arrange to meet with Mia after the funeral. I did go somewhere to be alone. I wasn’t thinking and went somewhere she knew about. She came to find me, and comforted me. I won’t lie to you, it was nice, but I was thinking about you the whole time. And that day at
