Chapter 41 A Family's Game

Luna Belle Fernandez POVMy heart beats a little faster when I face my dad. “What’s really going on, Dad? You’re scaring me when you and Mom fight like this.”“Nothing.” He crosses the veranda and rubs my arm like he used to do when I was little and he wanted to soothe me. “Would you like a glass of wine before lunch? You’re eighteen now after all.”“No, thanks.”He chuckles. “Bart said you had a little too much champagne last night. I’m glad you had fun.”I don’t correct him about the fun part.He clears his throat. “You know how much you and your siblings mean to me, don’t you?”“Of course.”“You’ve always been the apple of my eye.” He smiles as if to himself. “I’d always get into trouble with your mother for that.”“For having a favorite?” I ask, my throat tightening. Cassie is Mom’s favorite, and I know how much that used to hurt before I was old enough to understand. I’d hate for Cassie to have felt the same about Dad and me.“For spoiling you.” He takes a sip of his drink. “Yet

Chapter 42 The Family

Leonardo Franco POVWhen I arrive home, my mother is kneeling on the library floor with hundreds of brochures spread out in front of her.“Oh, hi,” she says, shuffling the glossy pamphlets. “You’re home early.”“I made good time with the boat. The wind was behind me.”She smiles up at me. “How was the birthday party?”The memories that flood me make me work my jaw. “Good.” And bad. But mostly memorable. Inarguably satisfying.“Did she like the car?”“Apparently not.” My tone is wry. “She donated it to charity.”My mother’s brow pleats. “I told you it was too flashy.”“Don’t worry about it. I instructed her brother to buy her a more average car.” I peer over her shoulder. “What are you doing?”“Organizing the wedding leaflets by themes and color. I was thinking of apricot as the principal color and palettes of orange as accent colors. How does that sound?”It takes effort to smile. The way in which I left in Negros Island put me in a foul mood. “Like you have everything under control.”

Chapter 43 The Fernandez Family

Luna Belle Fernandez POVLife is hectic when Kitty-Kat and I move in with Bart and Celeste and my university course starts in February. I embrace the strenuous pace with open arms. Being busy helps me to forget about birthdays and the unexpected gifts—or rather, curses—they bring. As I need my own wheels to commute from Talubangi Bay and to the campus, Dad buys me an entry-level Mini Cooper. The car is still expensive, but it’s a far cry from a Ferrari.Robin and I spend our free time together studying in the library. The separation from May left him heartbroken. We’re not as close as we used to be, but he’s still my only friend.Moments of leisure are scarce at the beginning. I have classes back-to-back from eight in the morning to six in the evening. On weekends, I either have lunch at Robin’s apartment or he dines at Bart and Celeste’s place. On the odd occasion, we squeeze in a swim at one of the many beautiful beaches. If Celeste is busy, we take Brady to the rock pool. I adore s

Chapter 44 My Aging Father

Luna Belle POVBart takes a big breath and blows out the candles, much to Baby Brady’s delight.Celeste hands Ryan a knife. “The honor is yours.”“No cake for us,” Oliver says. “It’ll upset our diet. If it didn’t come straight from the sea, I’m afraid we can’t touch it.”“Does caviar count?” Mom asks with a bite in her tone.Oliver looks genuinely puzzled. “That’s a very good question. No, I guess it doesn’t. The sea didn’t offer it, did it?”“Didn’t it offer the fish?” she asks.Dad kicks her under the table.Celeste hands out the slices of cake, starting with Brady who digs his little fists into the frosting and makes a huge mess of stuffing his face.“You’d think we’d eat before dessert is served,” Mom says under her breath.“There’s nothing wrong with doing things out of order every now and again,” Dad replies.Cassie cups her stomach. “This baby does not like chocolate.”“Do you need the bathroom?” Jack asks, jumping to his feet.Cassie waves him away. “I can make it there just f

Chapter 45 The Wedding Preparations

Leonardo Franco's POV“I damn well hope so.” He catches my gaze with a dark look. “Because you know what you’ll have to do if she becomes a threat to our family.”Kill her. I don’t think so. I’d rather chain her up in the basement.“And that will be a shame,” my father continues. “Seeing that this wedding is costing a damn fortune.”My smile is grim. “It’s not like we can’t afford it.”He pushes the bowl away. “Having plenty doesn’t mean you have to waste it.”“Don’t worry.” Fuck, I need a cup of coffee. “I’ll make sure it’s not wasted.”“Oh, Leo,” Venus exclaims, running into the room and slamming her palms over her mouth. “I just saw it.” Her eyes sparkle. “The wedding dress. Oh my God. It’s amazing. She’s going to look so beautiful.”My mother follows on my sister’s heels, wearing an off-white designer suit with black stitching on the collar and a thin black belt. Paired with a black patent leather handbag and shoes, she looks classy and wealthy, exactly the way my father likes her

Chapter 46 Parents Of Leonardo Franco

Mafia's Honor and Loyalty“You once said if there was anything I needed, I was to come to you, no questions asked.”Fernando Franco looked at Dante Sebastian, a little surprised. He did owe this man a favor, and it had been plaguing his mind when he’d come to collect. Five years ago, Dante saved his life. They were attending an important wedding, when there was an attack. If it weren’t for Dante, Fernando would be dead.He had great respect for Dante, even though there were many rumors and gossip that followed this man. Speculation suggested there was a time when Dante wanted to get out of the mafia. There was no getting out of their world. They were in it for life. The moment they made their first kill, their fate was sealed.Fernando’s first kill happened at thirteen. There had been an attack on his family home, and he’d not even hesitated. His father had been teaching him to shoot, to kill, to torture. Most thirteen-year-olds had their dads playing football with them in the backyard

Chapter 47 Fernando Franco

“Do not cry.” She clenched her hands into fists, gritted her teeth, and instead, saw the bar up ahead. It wasn’t a high-end bar, but it was quite popular. Since it was a Friday night, she saw it was already busy. She waved at Billy, the doorman, before heading in. The music was way too loud, but she wasn’t interested in the noise. She made her way to the back, placed her bag in the locker designated for her, and then went straight behind the bar.Boris Koslov, the bar owner, always had a uniform, but because he knew what she did on social media, he allowed her to wear whatever she had created. Some of her fans had come to see her to talk about the new designs. As long as they spent money, Boris didn’t have a problem. It had been over a week, and since she hadn’t made anything new, she wore the uniform Boris had custom-made for all staff. She had worried his lax rules with her would cause some problems for the rest of the staff, but they didn’t mind. So long as she had people coming to

Chapter 48 Your Father Wants Me To Marry You

He loved hearing her curse. It rolled off her tongue, and he knew very soon he was going to get her to beg him to fuck her.Fernando took a step toward her, then another, then another. Maria Victoria didn’t back up. She stayed perfectly still and tilted her head back to look at him. He stared into her eyes and was taken aback at just how beautiful she was.“Your father wants me to marry you. He wants you to have the respect you deserve and for me to take care of you. I guess this is his way of bringing you back into the family.” He wanted to touch her cheek to see if it was quite as soft as he imagined.“You can tell him he can fuck off as well.”With that, Maria Victoria whirled around and walked away.Oh, he loved a challenge. Fernando thought she’d be some simpering girl who would fall madly in love with him. Maria Victoria was anything but…Maria Victoria woke up the next morning and the conversation she had with Fernando Franco kept rushing back to her.Her father couldn’t be seri

Chapter 49 Stubborn Lady

Fernando and Dante's POV“You saw her? Talked to her?” Dante asked.Fernando stood at the office window and nodded. Dante had called a meeting, wanting to speak to him.“How is she?”He thought about Maria Victoria. “She is nothing like any of our women.”“No, I don’t imagine she is.”“How?” Fernando asked. “Men have women with mistresses all the time. They are never allowed this much freedom.”Dante fell onto the only sofa in his office. He had a glass of scotch in his hands. “I had every intention of keeping Nicole and Maria Victoria. They were part of my family, but once my wife nearly killed Nicole, I couldn’t allow it. When Nicole learned the truth, she was done with me. She never wanted me again, so I just couldn’t do it.” He sighed. “I guess that makes me weak.” Fernando didn’t say anything. He’d never met a woman that would make him weak.“She will never fit into our circles,” Fernando said.“With training, she will.”He clenched his jaw. So, that was the end game as well—tra

Chapter 50 Competing Characters

Maria Victoria had never slapped a man before. She certainly had never slapped a customer. And she’d never been kissed by a man, or by a customer. It was lame that at the age of twenty-three, she hadn’t been kissed. Why did Fernando have to be her first kiss? Her lips still felt a little swollen. After he’d kissed her, she’d pulled away, drew her hand back, and slapped him right across the face. The moment she did it, she’d been in a state of shock. Boris Koslov wasn’t around, but Alessandro had stepped forward.“He’s a paying customer.”Her heart had raced and she quickly apologized, even though it was the last thing she wanted to do. Only, Boris had been around, and he’d called her over to him. He told her to leave for the night, and he looked pissed.Great. Now, Fernando might have cost her a job. It wasn’t the best job in the world, but it paid the bills and left a little aside for her to enjoy her hobby, which is what she wanted right now.Without another look at Fernando, she le
