-1- Lily

Lily changed out of her work clothes into more comfortable clothing, a t-shirt, and jeans. She ran her hands through her dark hair, just glad to feel it down and loose again after a long day at work. Grabbing her keys, Lily left her apartment and drove to her adoptive parents' house. They invited her to dinner tonight, and for once, school and work didn't stop her from accepting. As she pulled into the long driveway, a feeling of home washed over her. Lily smiled as the large, two-story ranch style house came into view. Andrew, her father, ran quite the profitable Architect company. Lily got out of the car and waved to her brother, Tony, once she parked the car and got out. Her brother was most likely the biggest heartthrob in town. He had the suave movie-star good looks, a muscular build, and an easy smile."How goes the life of busting crime?" He teased while that easy smile made an appearance."Oh you know, a lot of work and long hours," Lily said as she walked up the steps. "We've

"God, Lacy, why do you always fall for the cocky ones," Lily complained. Her tone was a false exasperated disapproval.Lacy smiled impishly. "Men are much more fun that way, and he's like a god under the sheets!" Lacy's expression turned dreamy and dazed off into her fantasies.Lily shuddered with disgust. That was way too much information than she wanted to know about Chris. "Earth to Lacy, earth to Lacy," Lily called to her friend, snapping her fingers in front of Lacy's face. The daydreaming blond blinked a couple of times. "Oh sorry," she apologized with a smile growing on her face.Lily shook her head. She's hopeless! Lily thought with another smile. "What did you want to tell me so badly?"Lacy looked confused for a moment then got all excited. "Oh yeah! You remember that kid that stayed with us for about a year, James Lacrosse?" Lacy asked.Lily thought for a moment then nodded with a slight frown. They had never met face to face, but Lily knew of him very well. James Lacrosse

Lily and Lacy gave him a sheepish apology. Lily handed her sister the journal, and they tried to hide their laughter. The older man just shook his head. "James, as much as I regret the manner in which you have met. This is my adopted daughter, Lily Nawassa," he said. He gave her another disapproving look. "Lily, this is James Lacrosse."James held out his hand, and his large hand swallowed her much smaller one. Like all werewolves, his body temperature ran warm, and she could feel that heat run up her arm. Lily swallowed nervously, her mind going over all the things she heard about him. "Nice to meet you," he said, still giving her odd looks."Same here," she replied, glad she sounded normal. Lily wondered just how much of the twisted tale of James Lacrosse was true."Later we have some matters to discuss with Lily," Andrew told her, and she nodded. Lily knew when Andrew Roberts said the words matters to discuss that meant they were to be discussed privately."Okay, sure thing," she s

"I hope we are wrong about this," the alpha said once the human had left."So do I, but I have a bad feeling," James told him. He leaned back into the comfortable chair. "The deaths of the other two kids. The near-kidnapping of that other one reminds me too much of what happened to me for comfort." Almost twenty years passed, but he could still feel the silver wire wrapped around his neck. The mocking, cruel voices of the humans that tied him down. James clenched his jaw, forcing the memory away."I agree, unfortunately. We have to find this bastard before he ruins another life," Andrew said as he slammed his fist with anger on the desk.James flinched, despite the fact, he was far superior in strength to the alpha. Andrew, like all alphas, had that alpha presence that commanded obedience. In some cases, if an alpha put enough of that presence in his or her voice, he could force his will on others. "I thought about talking to the kid and the friends of the other teens. See if I can ge

"Not that fast Jake!" James told him, holding onto his shirt. "You have to answer my questions before you run and throw up.""How do you know my name?" Jake asked, his voice cracking with fear."Relax kid! I am not going to tear you apart unless you piss me off. I only want you to tell me about what happened a week ago," James replied as he returned his left hand to normal.Jake looked at him confused but nodded. "What do you want to know?" He licked his lips, his whole body tensed to run at any moment."Start off by telling me what happened," James suggested as he leaned against a nearby tree."Well I went out for a run then a bunch of humans came out of nowhere. They tried putting some metal cord around my neck but they missed, and I ran. That's it," Jake explained.James frowned, the similarity to his own kidnapping disturbing. Jake's fear hit him hard, making him wrinkle his nose in disgust. "Where did it happen," he demanded.Jake looked a little paler than before as he swallowed

"I am no kid, and there is no way I am talking to a loser like you," the teen spat, and a couple of the other teens cheered him on."Then you will be walking home, kid," James shot back, and the boy became furious. "Don't think for a minute that you and all your little friends will be able to move me from this spot. I'm James Lacrosse, and not even this whole town could take me out!"The group of teens before him gasped and whispered amongst themselves. The ring leader lost the color in his face and took a step back. "You're James Lacrosse?" he asked, his voice raising an octave. "I doubt it," he sneered once he regained his confidence.James took his jacket off and proceeded to show him the partial shift. The boy had the same reaction that Jake had that morning. He paled to a pasty white and looked at James in horror. He would've run, but it was evident his pride was bigger than his fear. "W-what do you want with me?""Actually, it's all of you I want to talk to. The two kids that di

Lily hurried towards the employee break room that also served as a locker room. She tossed her things into a small gray locker and slipped on the mandatory white lab coat. The whole time she ran over her cover story. She’s there two hours early because she wanted to try to get on top of the backlog they currently had. Lily put on a pair of latex gloves and took out the pills her dad gave her from the evidence locker. She had only done a basic test of the pills against known drugs, but it came up negative on all counts. So today she was going to go into a deeper analysis. Crushing one pill, Lily brushed the power into a petri dish and placed it into a large machine. The machine would tell her the chemical makeup and it should help her determine what the pill was for.Putting the bottle back into the locker, she decided to give some truth to her cover story. Taking one of the many samples waiting to be tested, Lily began to work. She’d made more progress when she heard shouting. Lily gl

Lily groaned and slowly opened her eyes. The brightness of the light reflecting off the white walls hurt her eyes. Her whole body ached as she tried to sit up, but decided against it. Her head was pounding with a horrible headache. She reached up to rub her sore temple, noticing the bandage there.Where was she, and why did she hurt so much? Oh yeah, the stupid thief at the lab. He’d hit her. “Lily, you’re awake,” Lacy cheered. She opened her eyes slowly to peek at her sister. Lacy’s usual well-groomed blonde hair was all a mess. Her eyes are red and puffy, and her clothing is all wrinkled and twisted.“Hey Lace,” Lily croaked with a small smile as she tried to sit up. Her sister pulled her into a tight hug. “Oh easy, easy. It hurts everywhere,” she said, feeling her body protest.Lacy immediately let her go with a guilty look and apologized. “I am going to call the doctor, who is too cute by the way, and everyone. They went down to the cafeteria about twenty minutes ago,” Lacy told h

A couple of hours later, Lily was free of the hospital and tossed the cop’s card into the trash. They questioned her and she answered with mostly lies to protect the pack. She walked to her car, then paused. What little good mood she had dissipated when she saw Tony leaning against her car. “What are you doing here, Tony? I thought I told the grand and powerful alpha I can make it home on my own,” she said, letting her irritation show.“Aw, not happy to see me?” he teased with a pout.Lily narrowed her eyes at him. “Not if it means what I think it means,” she replied.Tony looked at her with a sly expression. “Yeah, Dad sent me here to keep watch over you for a few days. You know, make sure the werewolf doesn’t want to finish what he started. Also, he wants the p

James could hear the alpha shouting at the woman in his office. “Here they go again,” Doctor Thompson said, shaking his head. James gave him a questioning look. The beta nodded his head. “Yes, they do this often. They may not be related by blood, but both have similar personalities,” he told him with a chuckle. His curiosity flared once more and almost asked the beta about her when the door flew open. Andrew stomped out of the room with the human in tow. Both were glaring at each other and the anger filled the room, making everyone, even him, tense. The human tried to break free from the alpha’s grip as she demanded that he let her go, but the alpha ignored her. He opened the front door and pushed her out onto the porch. “Stop trying to act like a one-man army,” he demanded in a harsh snarl. “I will tell you once more that you will do as I say! A pack is as strong as its weakest member and the pack will pr
