Chapter 1

In the morgue, I stared down at my grandma's lifeless body, fresh tears blurring my vision. On my phone screen, a recent text from Bella Reid lingered. It was a video of her clinging to Ethan's hand while they stared at each other under a sky full of fireworks.[I told Ethan I wanted fireworks, so he planned a whole night of them. He's always loved me the most!] she'd written, smug as ever. The whole glittery scene felt like a slap. The silence in the hospital was ice-cold, pressing on me like a weight.Yesterday was supposed to be my wedding day. Right before we exchanged rings, Ethan got a call and just... walked out. My grandma, sitting in the front row, was so shocked she started coughing up blood. I begged for help, but all anyone did was laugh at my misery.I called Ethan again and again. No answer. By the time I got my grandma to the hospital, it was too late. She was gone.Ethan left our wedding for Bella.Even through my grief, I arranged her cremation and planned a sma

Chapter 2

Bella shot me a mocking smile. "Grace, I talked to this expert, and he said if we hold a funeral for my hamster here, it'll come back as a human. Isn't that, like, a good deed?"Ethan gazed at her adoringly. "You're always so thoughtful. Don't worry; your hamster will feel it."Then Bella's eyes landed on the urn in my hands. "That white urn is beautiful. It'd be perfect for my hamster's ashes."I tightened my grip on my grandma's urn, glaring at them. "If you even think about touching her ashes, I swear, I'll fight you both."Ethan rolled his eyes. "Your grandma adored you, and here you are cursing her with this pathetic fake funeral. Don't you feel any shame?"My hands shook as I stared him down. "My grandma died yesterday—at the wedding. If you don't believe me, go ask the hospital!"Bella's tone turned sickly sweet. "Grace, we both know those ashes aren't real. But my hamster's death is real. Can't you just give me the urn?"Ethan looked at me, annoyed. "I've got a hamster f

Chapter 3

My face went pale as I staggered back, then tried to bolt for the door. But before I even got close, Ethan's bodyguards grabbed me, ignoring my struggles as they shoved me into the car and sped off to the hospital.I shoved my pregnancy report at the doctor, my voice shaky. "Look, this is from your hospital! Tell him I'm actually pregnant. A transfusion could hurt my baby."The doctor glanced at the report, then shot a quick look at Bella. "This isn't from our hospital. It's fake."I felt a chill. Bella must've already paid him off. I turned to Ethan, pleading. "He's lying! Take me somewhere else. You'll see—I really am pregnant!"But Bella slumped against Ethan, her voice all weak and pitiful. "Ethan, I feel horrible... Am I going to die?"Ethan's face tightened with worry as he held her. "No, Bella, I'm not letting that happen." He looked at the bodyguards. "Hold her down."I fought back, screaming, "Let me go! Ethan, you're gonna kill my baby! You're a monster!"Ethan just gl

Chapter 4

Ethan looked at me, annoyed. "I've told you a thousand times—Bella and I are just friends now. Why can't you get that? You're being heartless to her, and now you're pushing for a divorce?"My chest felt empty, but my voice cut through. "This marriage is over. I'm done."I spun on my heel and headed for the door. He tried to follow, but Bella clung to his arm, voice weak. "Ethan... my neck hurts so bad. I can barely breathe.""I'll get you to a doctor." Without a second thought, he scooped her up.I bolted out of the hospital barefoot, rain pounding down, just desperate to get away—anywhere he wasn't.A second later, everything went dark as I collapsed on the pavement, blood mixing with rain in a grim blur....When I finally woke up, two days had passed. Everything felt foggy, and I couldn't tell if it was day or night. I tried to sit up, but a gentle hand held me down."Don't move."Ethan stood beside me, silent, struggling for words. After a moment, he finally spoke."The d

Chapter 5

After Ethan bailed, I checked myself out of the hospital.I found a quiet cemetery and finally laid Grandma to rest, giving her the goodbye she deserved."I miss you, Grandma." I sat by her headstone until it got dark, not ready to leave. With her gone, the city felt empty. At the airport, I didn't even have a real destination in mind—anywhere was better than here.I bought a random ticket and ended up in some small, quiet town. I rented a tiny apartment and set up Grandma's photo on the table, like she was still right there with me.Ethan kept blowing up my phone, saying he was losing his mind trying to find me. I ignored him for a while, then finally changed my number just to get some peace.Once I'd settled in, I started looking for a job. But with barely any experience, the big companies didn't want me.After yet another failed interview, I left the building, frustrated, and accidentally bumped into someone. We both crouched down to pick up the scattered papers."Sorry abou

Chapter 6

I held Ethan's gaze, my voice steady. "The only one out of place here is you, Ethan. We're done."His frown deepened. "Don't forget, we're still married. You're my wife."Technically true—the divorce wasn't final yet."Keep stalling, and we'll settle this in court." With that, I got in the car with Luke. The next day, Ethan showed up at the office with Bella glued to his side."Grace," he started, "Bella's condition has worsened. She needs another blood transfusion. Come back to Oceanport with me."He reached for my arm, but I shook him off, scowling. "Let go of me."Luke stepped out, positioning himself between us. "Mr. Carter, what do you think you're doing?"Bella jumped in, eager to stir the pot. "Ethan, looks like Grace has a new boyfriend. And here you are, chasing after her."I shot Bella a pointed look, smirking. "Are you blind? He's my boss."Ethan's face darkened. "Grace, come with me. You have to save Bella."I crossed my arms, eyeing Bella, whose smug look falter

Chapter 7

Bella's face turned red as she gasped for air, her hand weakly reaching out. Just as she was about to pass out, Ethan let go, his eyes cold and unfeeling."Bella Reid, I won't let you die," he sneered. "You're going to live every day in misery."Watching it happen, I felt a grim sense of satisfaction. Bella was finally facing what she deserved.I glanced at Luke, and with just a look, we turned and left the room together.Outside, the rain poured down in sheets. I stared into it, remembering that night I'd stumbled out of the hospital, drenched and heartbroken. It had rained just like this.Luke told me to wait while he went to grab the car. But as soon as he left, Ethan came running out after me."Grace, please don't go," he pleaded, his eyes red. "I'm sorry—for everything. For our child. It was all Bella's lies; she tricked me."Sure, Bella was vile, but that didn't make Ethan innocent. He'd chosen to believe her, chosen to hurt me.I looked him dead in the eye, my expression

Chapter 8

I narrowed my eyes at Ethan. "Don't fool yourself. There's no future for us. If I could go back, I'd make sure we never met."He stiffened. "Do you really... hate me that much?"A cold laugh escaped me. "Hate? You don't deserve my love, and you sure don't deserve my hate. You're nothing to me. Come near me again, and I'll call the cops."After that, he disappeared from my life.Later, I heard he'd been in a serious car accident on his way home, in critical condition, calling my name from his hospital bed, hoping I'd show up.His mother even called, begging me to visit, but I refused. She'd watched as my grandma collapsed at my wedding—she had no right to ask for anything now.As for Bella, Ethan didn't spare her. He took over her family's business and drove them all to bankruptcy, leaving her disgraced and destitute. One night, as I worked late at the office, I was lost in thought when a cup of coffee appeared on my desk. I looked up to see Luke smiling."Isn't it a bit much to
