Chapter 1

Eight years after I married that award-winning actor, he publicly declared he was dating the top starlet, Celine James. He even posted a picture of the two of them celebrating their adopted “baby’s” birthday. I did not call him to interrogate him as usual. Instead, he hurriedly explained, “It’s just a pet we adopted. As its ‘dad’, I have to be there for its birthday.”I said calmly, “Rather than adopting a furbaby, why don’t we get a divorce? Then you can have an actual baby with her.”…My husband, the award-winning actor Jonas Yves, held a grand confession ceremony for another woman. He publicly declared their relationship on the Internet, making headlines and moving hearts. As for me, his wife of eight years, I could only watch the raucous interview from the side like an outsider. The journalists on the scene were in an uproar. The fans in the front row were celebrating. The next second, Jonas put a matching ring on her finger. Under the spotlight, they looked like a per

All Jonas said was, “Wait here for me and reflect on yourself, Jeanine.”After a brief pause, I said, “Go ahead. Your work comes first.”Celine turned around and smirked at me, her expression smug and piercing. Before this, I would have stopped them, saying, “No! Jonas is mine. I can’t let him leave with another woman.”I used to think our marriage of eight years would last forever as long as I continued to contribute in silence, giving him all my patience and understanding. In order to keep our marriage afloat, and to show Jonas my irreplaceable love for him, I tolerated everything. However, I was wrong. In return for my sacrifice and understanding, he took me for granted and hurt me with abandon.Back then, he would tell me in advance whenever he had to kiss someone on-screen.Now, all he said coldly was, “Don’t make a fuss.”I remained on the spot and scrolled through my phone. All I saw were articles of their relationship announcement.“Only an idiot would date me. I’m a

Jonas was livid. “I told her, this is just an act! We’ll announce our breakup in a year. What else does she want?”“But I think this time…”Jonas suddenly flipped out, his expression contorted with disgust. “‘I spoiled her by giving in too much. Fine, she can come back if and when she likes. I’m not going after her.”My outstation trip went well. After touching down back home, I returned to the company’s employee dorms.I took a month off, but not so I could serve him. I had a very important thing to do.Another month later, Jonas finally lost patience and called me. He snorted coldly. “A friend said you’re back in town. Why aren’t you coming home?”“I’ve been too busy with work lately, so I’m staying at the dorms.”He demanded, “Then what about me? Aren’t you going to take care of me anymore?”I laughed indignantly. “You’re not a kid, so why do you need me to take care of you? What, do you need me to change your diaper?”Jonas paused in surprise. “What’s the matter, Jeanine?

I gave him a long look before shaking my head. “No.”He instantly looked relieved. “Time is of the essence. If I delay any longer, Pudding may be lost forever. Its life is at stake here.“We celebrate your birthday every year, so it’s no big deal. Since I can’t make it up to you today, I’ll do it some other day.”I held his gaze and said expressionlessly, “Forget it, Jonas. Let’s get a divorce.”As soon as I said that, Jonas frowned and barked at me, “Can’t you be a bit more understanding?”Those were the words he said to me the most. How much more “understanding” did I have to be?“Why do you keep making a fuss over nothing? Celine doesn’t mean you any harm, and she won’t try to steal me from you. Why must you bring up a divorce at a time like this? It’s just your birthday. You celebrate it every year, and we can make up for it anytime.”His tone was matter-of-fact, his expression nonchalant. Looking at him, I suddenly felt lost… and relieved. All of a sudden, I understood th

Jonas frowned at me, his tone cold. “There was only one room in the hotel that night, so we shared it. There were two single beds, and we only discussed the script.”“Do you actually believe that?” I looked at him coolly.I discovered I was pregnant a while back, and I had wanted to surprise him on my birthday. However, that was also the day I received the photo of them at the hotel. After that, I went outstation to abort the baby.I snorted. “Of course, you were chatting innocently in the room. Nothing else.”Jonas started yelling at me again. “I’ve really spoiled you, Jeanine Smith! You’ve gone too far! How could you kill your own baby over meaningless rumors? I order you to apologize right—”Before he could finish that sentence, I slapped him twice across the face. “You have no right to demand an apology from me.”I took out the divorce papers I had prepared long ago. “Sign this, and we can part on amicable terms.”There was no more love in my eyes when I looked at him, only

I did not want to waste too much time on him, so I brought up the viral post. “You want to talk to me about the post, right? What’s your PR strategy? I can help.”Both of them lit up. “Really?”Jonas paused as though to find the right words. “If you make some concessions, we can still salvage this.”“What do you mean?”“You just have to publicly admit you’re my ex, but we broke up ages ago. You just kept insisting because you couldn’t give up on me.”“Sure.” I would not ask him why he would do this to me, or insult him for throwing me to the wolves, using me as his shield and scapegoat. After all, this was what I was after. Both Jonas and Celine looked at me in delight. After a few minutes of silence, I added, “But I have one condition.”Jonas grinned at me. “Forget one condition, you can ask for ten and I’d still fulfill them.”I looked at him expressionlessly. “I want a divorce and half of your assets.”The blood drained from his face. After a long while, he laughed coldl

As I approached them, my mother took my hand, looking me up and down with tears in her eyes. “Sweetheart, you lost weight.”My father turned his head away, wiping off his tears. I noticed that my father’s hair had gone weight, while my mother had new wrinkles in the corners of her eyes. My heart skipped a beat. After a moment’s silence, I lowered my head and said softly, “I’m sorry, Mom, Dad. I shouldn’t have married Jonas, and I definitely shouldn’t have cut contact with you.”My mother hugged me tight, weeping. “We don’t blame you, sweetheart. We’re here to bring you home.”I saw tears pooling in my father’s eyes, and my own tears flowed freely. My parents were rich and powerful. They raised me with love and care, but I broke their hearts. Now, they forgave me and accepted me home, showing me I still had a loving family. They had always been my sanctuary. As for me, there were two reasons I let Jonas and Celine defame me online. One was so I could go home. I missed my paren

The truth was, I predicted Shane would show up at the banquet. After all, we grew up together. I was not unfamiliar with his ways.He was a playboy as well, but he did sincerely care about me back then. For men, the most beautiful woman was always the one who got away.I had just gotten divorced, and the whole Internet had turned against me. It was no wonder he felt bad for me.“Goodness, that poor lady! She didn’t deserve to meet an asshole husband and bitchy homewrecker like that.”“What a joke! I knew that Jonas was a chauvinist pig. Does he think he’s a king? Ordering his manager to torture his wife like that!”“Isn’t that domestic abuse? We should put both of them behind bars!”“People like them don’t deserve to appear in the public eye.”…Now it was their turn to withstand the rain of insults. At the same time, an unknown number blew up my phone. I eventually answered.“Did you do this, Jeanine?”“How could I? You and Celine probably offended someone else.”Jonas pa

I forced down the corners of my lips, resisting the urge to smirk.“How dare you treat my daughter like that!” my dad roared. My parents’ presence kicked the roiling atmosphere into an even higher gear.“I know that man! He’s Mr. Smith, an uber-wealthy icon in the financial world!”“That woman next to him is Lydia Cane, the famous violinist!”“And that ridiculously handsome young man is Shane Johnson!”“Whoa, Jonas’ ex is a huge deal!”…I savored the look of disbelief in Jonas’ eyes. I knew why he was surprised. I never told him about my wealthy background or my famous parents. I did not want to cause him any pressure or hurt his self-esteem. All he knew was that my parents were still alive. He thought I was a nobody he could bully as he liked, but he was wrong. The hall fell silent. Since no one else was speaking, it was finally my turn.I tossed out the evidence. My collection included our marriage certificate, our wedding photos, our divorce papers, the pregnancy test
