“A-Are you insane?” I whispered, my eyes widening as I looked at him in disbelief. “Do you even hear yourself?”Smirking, River took a step closer as I took one back. But then, I realized there was nowhere else to go. I’m tracked on the rail, the very place where he told me to step away because I might fall.“I thought… You told me to get away from here,” I told him, my throat dry, and my cheeks reddening. “Yet you’re the one who brought me to the rail.”River didn’t answer immediately.Instead, his hands went on both my sides. He didn’t touch me, nor did I feel trapped.Yet he completely blocked my escape, and at the same time, he shielded me from the open edge behind.I feel cornered… yet protected. The entire opposite of what my parents were doing to me.“As long as I’m here, nothing bad will happen to you,” River said, meeting my gaze. “And I don’t say things I don’t mean. Ever.”I could hear the reassurance in his voice, and at the same time, that statement felt familiar to me.D

I shook my head. If my parents knew that he was here, he might be exiled from the mansion, given that they already don’t like him from the start. It’s not like River couldn’t find any place to stay while he’s here in the States. I’m certain that he could afford a luxurious suite, or even another mansion if that’s what he liked. However, given that he went here, he must have his personal reason. I can’t hinder the plans he had here. That could be the only way for me to repay his kindness.“I’m fine. Believe me,” I told him, looking River in the eye. “You should go, and don’t stay outside my room. Go to your room and rest.”“But—”“If you do that, you’re also protecting me,” I added before River could even finish his sentence. “Because if you leave now, they won’t scold me.”River wanted to argue at first. I could see it in his eyes, but when he internalized my words, realizing that what he wanted to do would directly affect me, he nodded.“Alright.” His lips curved into a small smile

The sound echoed across the rooftop. I froze. My heart thumped more rapidly than before as I realized what I had done. My fingers trembled, stinging from the impact.I didn’t know where those intense emotions came from. I managed to control my emotions for a long time, thanks to my parents, who kept training me to do it.But with River… What exactly triggered me?“I-I’m sorry,” I muttered, having a hard time looking him in the eye. “I didn’t mean to—”“I know,” he said softly as he held my trembling hands. “Trust me, Serenity. I know.”His head turned slightly with the force earlier, and his right cheek was red. I know that it stings, even though he could handle it.But there was no anger in his eyes. Only understand. It even felt like he understood me more than I could understand myself.I felt sick. My vision suddenly became blurry with tears, the humiliation and fear twisting together until I couldn’t tell them apart.“Stop saying things like that. You’re making it worse,” I whisp

Trembling and trying to ignore the crying inside my mind, I nodded.“Great.” Mom’s lips curved into a smile. “Don’t think about anything else, okay?”She helped me lie properly on the bed as she stood up. Then, Mom placed the blanket over my body, covering me.“The side effect should be gone after a few hours, just in time before your sleep time. But if it doesn’t, if that… crying continues inside your mind, then inform me immediately.”“Yes, Mom,” I affirmed, my eyes shutting down even if I don’t like it.I don’t know if it was the medicine’s side effect or something, but it felt like all my energy was being taken away from me.“Good night, sweetie.”I felt my mom’s lips on my forehead before she turned off the lamp and left the room. The room sank into darkness as the door closed softly behind her.“Hah.” I sighed as I sat again, breathing heavily.I didn’t tell her exactly how I felt. On how the crying continued. It subsided with the medicine, but it never left.Like it was already

“It’s because of the medicine, right?” Mom asked, smiling, as she brushed my hair. “It’s so effective to the point that you sleep soundly, forgetting all those… hallucinations you have.”She’s asking a question, but at the same time, it felt like she was trying to hypnotize me with those words… Or her?It feels like she was just convincing herself. But for what?“Is that right, Serenity?” she asked again when I wasn’t answering, and it was just a few seconds since she uttered those words. “Tell me. You slept peacefully because the medicine calmed you down, right? And it’s not because of another reason?”“No, Mom,” I answered immediately, trying my best to sound neutral even if my heart was thumping rapidly, as if it wanted to go outside my body. “You’re right. I slept because of the medicine. It made me forget everything.”It was a lie, but I have a feeling that if I told her the truth, everything would be worse. Who knows what she will do next? She might make me drink another medicin
