KOOKIE:The entire day, I keep working while cursing Levi for putting me up to the task. I thought it would be easy, but apparently the woman Billie was poisoned. She attended an event over the weekend, and she has been unwell since then. A friend poisoned her. That is another case for the police, and they are currently investigating. The entire day, I try to stabilize her, putting her on IV fluids.I am so invested in her I do not even realize time has passed until I check the time.“Nine!” I exclaim in panic, looking at my watch. Then I walk to one window, drawing the curtain open to see it is actually night.I rub my temples, taking a deep breath. My mind races as I try to remember what it is I am forgetting, but it barely registers in my mind.“The Alpha is here,” I hear Billie’s son say to his mother, and before I can speak, Levi walks through the door in the company of his guards.I scoff at the thought of him coming to scrutinize my job. Did he really think I would leave a poor

A CALL

KOOKIE:Elias has to be joking, I say to myself as I stare at him. I know he is hurt, but breaking up with me is definitely not the solution. We have to work this out.“No,” I say, shaking my head, grabbing his face and kissing it. He lets out a sigh, gripping my hands tightly, like he is trying to hold on for dear life.He is clearly hurt and isn’t thinking straight.“Yes, Kookie,” he says again, and I feel my heart skip a beat again. He pulls me away from his body, looking me in the eye.By now, my eyes are watering, and I cannot hold it back. The news is unexpected, and I wanted to have a good night’s rest.“I love you, Kookie. I do, but I do not think this is working for us,” he says, and I shake my head. “Your mind isn’t with me, and it may never be with me.”“Is this about Levi? I do not love him anymore, I—”“Stop, please,” he pleads in a low tone.“You do not have to be in love with him for your heart to be with him. It’s almost like the both of you are soulmates and I am just

LEVI:Getting a call from Blue on the alpha hotline is the last thing I expect. Everything that happened between Kookie and Elias last night isn’t new to me. I watched how he broke her, and it hurt deep in the places I think I’ve numbed. Seeing her like that—shattered, knowing I can’t do a damn thing to help, kills me. I hate it so much, and I know what it takes to stop me from driving over and punching his perfect little face. But who am I kidding? I am the biggest villain in her story, and I don’t think I can undo what I’ve done to her.I barely slept last night, watching footage after footage like a fool, watching Elias play the part of a decent man—cleaning up, making breakfast, pretending he hasn’t just emotionally gutted her. I hate him. But I hate myself more for letting this kind of thing happen to her. Everything revolves around the decisions I make, because if I had been wiser, she might never have met Elias.I used to be the one who held her. Who made her laugh, and the one

CARE TAKER

LEVI:“I... I can’t,” I stutter, glaring at her. Her eyes are as beautiful as ever, and fuck, I want nothing more than to be with her—but not in this state. I would never forgive myself if I did that, and she would probably hate me forever, because she probably wouldn’t even remember.“Oh, please, stop acting like a child,” she breathes in a low, ragged, and soaked voice. I swallow hard at our proximity, feeling myself strain against my pants. This is the worst moment for that, so I shut my eyes, trying not to think of her. I think of a lot of things to distract myself. Her fingers tighten around my shirt, pulling me closer. I can feel the heat radiating off her skin, the way her chest rises with every shallow breath, but still, I try not to put that in mind. Her legs shift beneath me, and before I can process what’s happening, her hand slides to my chest—then lower. My trick to forget and think of random things fails as my body reacts positively to her. I suck in a sharp breath, catc

I LOVE HER

KOOKIE:My head pounds like there’s a village of Smurfs throwing a party in it.A loud groan escapes my throat as I shift under the covers, and for a moment, I don’t know where I am. I open my eyes to see the stream of the setting sun filtering through the curtains. My tongue feels dry and heavy, and my stomach turns in slow, nauseating waves. I place a hand on my forehead as though that would make the drumming go away. Then I turn around, blinking slowly until my eyes form a full image of the glass of water covered on my nightstand with a small container beside it.I force myself to sit up, noticing a note by the pill and water. My fingers tremble as I reach for it, unfolding the paper with weak hands.“Take these when you wake up. You should rest if you still feel tired.”My eyes widen at the note as I recognize Levi’s handwriting, causing my face to pale. The pounding in my head heightens, and I swallow hard, clutching my head. I reach for the painkillers, flushing them down with w

THE FATHER

KOOKIE:I hang up before my mother can say anything else. I don’t trust my voice to hold, and I don’t want her to hear me cry. She will worry, and that is the last thing I want. I can take care of myself, I mutter as the silence in the kitchen thickens. It presses on my chest, wraps around my lungs like a fist.I glance down at the meal Levi left in the microwave. I pull it out and set it on the counter. The moment the lid comes off, a familiar aroma fills the air, curling into my senses like a memory I didn’t know I still carried. My breath hitches as I realize it is from Anns. It is the little corner shop Levi and I used to sneak off to when we were younger, long before life swallowed us whole. We’d share a plate and argue about who got more pieces of the meats. The meals were expensive to me, but it was never my problem because Levi would always foot the bills. I sit down slowly, still staring at the food. I haven’t tasted this in six years, and it still smells exactly the same. Th

THE KIND OF LOVE

KOOKIE:Horror drains from my parents’ faces at my confession, and for a split second, there is nothing but utter silence between us.“Who else knows?” Mother breaks the silence, and I stare at her with my tear-stained eyes. She grabs my hand. “This is all new to us, and it is a crime according to—”“Luna Jasmine is aware,” I cut her off before she begins to read the entire constitution of the Diamond Moon Pack. “And Elias too.” My voice goes really low, and my father claps his hands.“At least I do not have to worry about my grandchild being from a lowly pack.”“Nigel!” my mother cautions, and he throws his hands in the air with no atom of remorse in his eyes, obviously.Silence runs through again, then my mum keeps rubbing my hands before she lets out a sigh.“Blue doesn’t k

PICKING HER UP

LEVI:A week had passed since I almost had sex with Kookie drunk, and every single day I have not stopped thinking about it. I am glad I avoided it, but that is not my concern. I watched her the entire day tear up in the kitchen, and she was crying because of me.It is bad enough I have carried all this burden for years, and it makes a part of me wish she had gotten over me. Another part of me wishes she hasn’t, because I want her back. But watching her cry because of me and not being able to do anything about it is a different kind of hurt.“Kookie will be here in like twenty minutes and I want you to leave,” my mother says to me, drawing me back to the present. Her condition has improved to the common eye. Her pale face is now brighter, and she has been smiling more, but she has no hair now after a couple rounds of chemotherapy. That is really not my concern because all I want is for her to be

TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE

KOOKIE:The ringing of my phone startles me, and I take it out to see that it is Elias calling. It’s been almost two weeks since we broke up, and he hasn’t called or checked in on me to see if I’m surviving or not. That is very convenient for him to call me at this point when I’m trying to move on from him.My heart shakes in my chest as I watch the phone call end. I squeeze it in my hands, wondering if I should block him or not for taking my heart out and ripping it into literal shreds. If not that I’m a hopeless romantic, Elias is enough to make me give up on men. It was so brutal of him to hurt me that way.I try to steady my breathing, and the moment the phone rings again, I pick it up.“What do you want, Elias?” I ask before he speaks.“I want to apologize, Kookie,” he begins, but I don’t let my guard down around him. My jaw is tight, and

SACRIFICING MYSELF

LEVI:Thick and black smoke bleeds into the day, coiling into the sky and swallowing the sun whole. I slam the brakes before the entrance of Blue’s school, my heart stopping when I see it is her school building engulfed in flames. Pack police are everywhere, and the entire street is in chaos. Sirens blare as officers in ash-dusted uniforms yell orders at each other, and one holds a megaphone, shouting something I can’t even hear over the thud in my ears.Kookie is going to freak out if she knows this happened, and I blame myself for being minutes late. I’m out of the car before it fully stops, and I dash towards the situation, hoping she is out of danger, but still, there could be kids in there and if something happens, I am the alpha of the pack. My wolf is already clawing beneath my skin as I shove through the crowd.“What the hell is going on?!”“Alpha Levi, you need to step back,” the sergeant in charge says to me, and my brows furrow in anger as I glare at him, burning in fury.“
