CHAPTER 21

Natalia's POVThe room went eerily silent, except for the sound of my laptop fan and my racing heart. My thoughts slowly, as it took in the information on the screen, word for word.Robert Brooks— he was the founder, funder and beneficiary of the organisation. And it was linked with everything.Every case of child labour, child trafficking, missing fund— everything pointed back to this organization and not even Diamonds. It was almost as if Diamonds had always been the cover story, because who would think a charity organization would commit these crimes? The evidence was right there, under everyone's noses, yet, no one cared to check. Till today."Wesley," I whispered, still breathless from the shock. "This could change everything..."He nodded, his eyes never leaving the screen. I could see how tightly he clenched his jaw in a silent fury, yet he nodded once more."You are right... We have enough to start connecting the dots." He straightened up and moved to his side of the t

CHAPTER 22

Robert's POVThe moment I read the news from the blogs, I knew there was going to be trouble.Ciara was so dumb and useless. I should have never done business with her. I should have known that all she was good for was a nice fuck and nothing else! The imbecile even went ahead to send video evidence to the police just to impress Wesley, who was obviously playing her!"Stupid bitch!" I cursed as I ran my fingers roughly through my hair.My thoughts were rushing as I tried to think of my next move because I knew that this foolish decision Ciara had taken was going to seriously affect me if I didn't counter it soon.My goal and mission to take over the Carson group would all be ruined and it would be her fault! That stupid dumb bitch!I already had Natalia at a tight corner. She was like a mouse that had nowhere else to go but run back to me but somehow, Ciara was opening an escape plan for her."Stupid bitch!" I cursed over and over again as I paced, glaring at my phone— hoping

CHAPTER 23

Natalia's POVLila's words still rang out in my head as we packed our devices and prepared to head out of the building.I kept asking myself the question she had thrown at me. Why didn't I try harder? He had already pointed out the angle he was taking. He already gave me access to all the documents.I had lawyers and people— maybe even smarter people— in my corner but somehow, I still let him help. Why?And then again, she had mentioned the repercussions it was going to have on him.A frown had sat on my face ever since she had asked that because as hard as I tried, I couldn't think of anything that we weren't already solving. If it was about a scandal, our visit to the station to deliver the evidence we'd found should clear that. Lila wasn't referring to that.So what could it be?"Earth to Natalia?" Wesley's voice cut through my thoughts.I blinked and found him standing before me with a smile. "You look lost, what is it?"My eyes met his and for a second I wanted to tell

CHAPTER 24

Natalia's POV Long after I had ended the call, my fingers still clutched the phone. My heart was racing and the room felt like it was squeezing the life out of me.What was wrong with Robert? Why couldn't he just leave me alone? How dare he threaten me like this after everything he did?My hands trembled just slightly, but I curled them into fists as rage boiled through me.My thoughts went to Wesley and I considered calling him to inform him of this— or even my dad and Mr Marcus. But just as I raised the phone, my own reflection shot back at me..."What am I doing?" I whispered, pushing the phone away.I wasn’t going to fall apart. Not again. Not over him. This had to end with me.That thought echoed louder than any threat Robert could whisper to me.Because if I went running to Wesley now, what would that prove? That I was still the broken woman who needed someone else to save her? No.I’d had enough of hiding behind people. My father. The company.Even Wesley, as good

CHAPTER 25

Natalia's POVIn less than a week, I found an apartment. It was a modest two-bedroom on the sixth floor of a quiet building just outside the city center. It was modern with a lot of natural light and bare walls that I could do anything on. It was the kind of place that felt new— not tainted by memories or past shadows. The perfect place for me to make my base and forge on with my plans. So as soon as all the legal formalities were done, I moved in that evening. There was no need for Fanfare or grand announcements. I just took a couple of things from my room and got settled in.It felt strange, starting over in such a relatively smaller space compared to the Carson Estate. But there was something liberating about it. It just felt right.I went to work and came back to my little space to do more research on my plan. I knew Robert, as the police continued searching for him, I was sure he was laying low but he wasn't going to stop.He would keep looking for ways that would get h

CHAPTER 26

Natalia's POVThe next day, I got out of bed early and quickly made an appointment with a fertility specialist. If getting a child was what I needed to stop Robert, then so be it.With determination sizzling in my mind, I quickly got ready and made my way to the hospital. The roads were surprisingly free of traffic, and we were at the clinic in less than fifteen minutes. My eyes went to the sign at the top of the building that read, Haven Crest Clinic and I felt a shiver move down my spine.I was really doing this."Ma'am, would you like me to wait for you?" The Uber driver asked, pulling my thoughts back to him."No, don't worry. I will order another. Thank you," I said with a smile as I alighted from the car. I transferred his fare and walked into the hospital. My heart was racing— not with fear, but with a strange unease that sizzled underneath my veins.I couldn't tell if it was just the gravity of what I was about to do. Or the idea of actually becoming a mother for lega

CHAPTER 27

Wesley's POVIt was the perfect afternoon, cool breeze and calming nerves as I flipped through the pile of files on my desk— my mind barely even grazing them.Because my thoughts were with Natalia.Ever since the last conversation we had, I couldn't help the feelings that consumed me.Her question about transferring ownership of her inheritance in a way that she still had some sort of control, was a bit unusual. The only way she could do that was through having a child... An option I had also once considered for myself.Months ago, when my mother's company got stolen from me by Robert, I had also considered transferring whatever I owned to a secure heir. And my lawyer had advised me on getting a child.I had even gone through with dropping samples of my sperm at a certain hospital, Lila suggested but when it came to getting a surrogate, I had cancelled out the thoughts entirely.I couldn't bring myself to make a woman go through the pains of childbirth, just because I could af

CHAPTER 28

Wesley's POVAs Lila left the office, I was left with a frown on my face as I wondered why Haven Crest would send me a message after so many months.I considered ignoring it but somehow the prospect of their call created a ball of curiosity within me that I couldn't deny.Sighing, I took my phone and dialed the specialist number. She picked on the first ring— like she had been waiting for the call."Hi, Mary, I got your message. What's going on?""Wesley, I am so happy you called us back," she began and I could instantly tell that she was very excited about something."Sure, what up?""We actually have a patient. She is a dedicated and hardworking young woman and she is in a very delicate situation—""I am sorry, Mary, but... I don't see what this has to do with me..." I cut in, already growing bored at the explanation."Well, she came to us wanting to have a baby through our donor programs..."Her voice suddenly faded in my mind as my emotions flickered. My heart started racing with

CHAPTER 29

Natalia’s POVMy eyes remained fixed on the window as the car passed through the beautiful lightings that colored the streets of New York.It was almost like it wasn't night time. The dark sky was just a backdrop behind all the beautiful plays of light.Yet, as beautiful and peaceful as the view was, my mind was drowning in thoughts. And no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't bring myself to relax. My heart was constantly racing as if I was being chased down by a ghost. The ghost of Robert.Everywhere I turned, I kept feeling like someone was watching me... Like someone was spying on me.I tried to tell myself that it was just in my head but it refused to leave. I just couldn't stop thinking about it.That was why when I got the message from Lila, I couldn't refuse. In fact, I didn't even wait to hear the entire detail, as long as it was going to involve me forgetting about my immediate problems, then it was a yes.I could have sincerely said yes to anybody else, as long as I did

CHAPTER 30

Wesley's POV My eyes narrowed at Natalia's request. It was completely unusual. But before I could protest, she got to her feet and stretched her hand to me."Are you coming or not?"Again, I was hesitant. Just a few minutes ago, she looked scared. Almost like she was looking out for something. And now this?"Please don't be a spoilsport Wesley. Come on!" She grabbed my hand herself and wiggled her brows at me."Natalia, are you sure that you don't want to go home and maybe relax for a bit?" I asked, resisting her pull."No, Wesley! It's a celebration. Let's go all out. Besides, it's not everyday we do this..." Something flashed in her eyes but before I could make sense of it, she smiled. And that smile of hers was surely going to be the end of me. The resistance I was putting up, all but vanished the second her bright smile came alive."Okay, fine. You win." I resigned, mirroring her smile. "But if you start dancing on the tables, I will pretend not to know you!"She threw her head b
