Natalia's POV

Long after I had ended the call, my fingers still clutched the phone. My heart was racing and the room felt like it was squeezing the life out of me.

What was wrong with Robert? Why couldn't he just leave me alone? How dare he threaten me like this after everything he did?

My hands trembled just slightly, but I curled them into fists as rage boiled through me.

My thoughts went to Wesley and I considered calling him to inform him of this— or even my dad and Mr Marcus.

But just as I raised the phone, my own reflection shot back at me...

"What am I doing?" I whispered, pushing the phone away.

I wasn’t going to fall apart. Not again. Not over him.

This had to end with me.

That thought echoed louder than any threat Robert could whisper to me.

Because if I went running to Wesley now, what would that prove? That I was still the broken woman who needed someone else to save her?

No.

I’d had enough of hiding behind people. My father. The company.

Even Wesley, as good

Natalia's POVIn less than a week, I found an apartment. It was a modest two-bedroom on the sixth floor of a quiet building just outside the city center. It was modern with a lot of natural light and bare walls that I could do anything on. It was the kind of place that felt new— not tainted by memories or past shadows. The perfect place for me to make my base and forge on with my plans. So as soon as all the legal formalities were done, I moved in that evening. There was no need for Fanfare or grand announcements. I just took a couple of things from my room and got settled in.It felt strange, starting over in such a relatively smaller space compared to the Carson Estate. But there was something liberating about it. It just felt right.I went to work and came back to my little space to do more research on my plan. NATALIA'S POVThe mall buzzed with life as I pushed my cart through the aisles, grabbing bottles of champagne, chips, and enough party favors to fill a banquet hall. It was my 24th birthday, and I could feel the excitement bubbling inside me. Tonight was going to be perfect!Robert had promised to make today a special day for me and the mere imagination of the surprise he had in store for me, made me blush. We had been married for six months now and he was still the same charming and sweet Robert I fell in love with.I paused in the middle of the aisle, and stared up at the rows of colorful balloons. Then, I picked a pack of gold balloons and tossed it into the cart. "This is going to be the best night ever," I whispered to myself, a smile stretching across my face.At checkout, the cashier gave me a knowing look. "Big party tonight?""Yeah," I said, beaming with smiles. "It’s my birthday.""Well, happy birthday to you!" She said and winked. "I hope you enjoy yourself."I laughed lig

NATALIA'S POVThe drive back to the Carson estate was quiet, save for the occasional rumble of the cab’s engine. I sat staring out through the window, as the city's lights blurred past me. I could still remember the last conversation I had with my father exactly six months ago."Don't do this, Natalia," He had said to me. "He's only using you. He doesn't even love you."But I never listened to him. By then, I was head over heels in love with Robert and there was nothing my father could say to convince me otherwise.Robert’s betrayal replayed in my mind. I could still picture the smirk on his face when I caught him red-handed. I could still hear Ciara's faint giggle in the back of my mind. I clutched my bag tighter, as if it could keep me from falling apart entirely. When the car pulled into the familiar stone driveway, I could already see the estate in the distance. The sprawling mansion, with its grand pillars and expansive gardens, stood as a reminder of a world I had tried to escap

NATALIA'S POV The next morning, I stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the collar of my crisp white blouse. My black pencil skirt hugged my waist, and my heels added just enough height to make me feel in control. I needed every ounce of confidence for what lay ahead. Clutching my file—a polished resume and the official letter stamped with my father’s seal, I took a deep breath.Today was the day.As I readied myself to step out of the house, I heard a familiar voice call out to me. It was the family chef, Mrs. Theresa. She walked up to me and crashed her weight upon me in a tight hug."I didn't hear you come in last night," She frowned."You taught me how to sneak out as a child, remember?" I chuckled. We laughed as the memories of my childhood with a much younger Mrs. Theresa played in my mind. She had been much more than our chef. She was a part of the family as far as I was concerned."I heard about Robert," She muttered. My face got clouded at the mention of his name and I sig

NATALIA'S POV The hallway fell silent as soon as the words left my mouth."You're joking, right?" Wesley chuckled. "Look, you don't have to force it in here."His eyes darted over to Ciara and Robert who were still standing together and he turned his attention back to me."My brother has her wrapped around his fingers," He whispered in my ears. "I can offer you a better job at my company. You have a CV right?"I sighed, placing a hand across his shoulder."After what Robert did to me, I never expected there'd be one reasonable Brooks left in the world," I said. "But you've proven me wrong already. I'm really grateful, but you've got to let me handle this."Wesley nodded slowly and stepped aside for me. I walked up to Ciara and handed over the envelope in my hand to her."From Vincent Carson himself," I announced.I stood there, watching as Ciara tore the envelope open and brought out the letter. Her eyes skimmed through and I could see a hint of disbelief in her eyes."It has his sea

NATALIA'S POVWith zero idea where my office was, I walked out of there with full confidence. Everything was finally falling in place. The look of shock on Robert's face was too perfect. He thought he was dealing with just— a nobody— now he was going to regret his decisions for the rest of his bloody life!I was still going down the hallway with a satisfactory smile on my face when it suddenly dawned on me that I had no idea where I was going. There was no way that I would go back to Ciara for directions, so I started checking the name tags on each door. I was close to the end of the long hallway when a familiar face appeared before me with a smile on her face."Hi, hmm— I'm Beth, we met earlier," she said, holding to her chest. "You must be looking for the— I mean your new office?"My eyes took in her unfamiliar clothes for a moment and even though I couldn't recognize it, I did remember her face."You are the girl who showed me to Ciara's office." I beamed and she smiled even bright

Natalia’s POVThe moment the question left my mouth, Wesley turned visibly pale.I couldn’t tell if this was just in my head or he truly lost all color suddenly. Was it guilt? Was he here to gang up against me? Did Robert send plant him here— was it all a game?Just as I started to overthink it, he smiled.“I’m not here for him, if that’s what you are thinking.” He let out.Heat flooded my cheeks as an itch of embrassment crossed my mind but I quickly crossed my arms, covering up my emotions.“Okay, so why are you here exactly? The last time I checked Diamonds had nothing to do with your company…”His smile deepened— and I could have sworn I saw a flicker of something in his eyes just before he pocketed his hands.“I’m actually here because we are looking to partner on a sustainable luxury line with Diamonds,” he said but my eyes only narrowed further.“Mr. Wesley, your company is an energy saving industry. What sort of partnership can you possibly want with a Jelwelry line?”

Wesley’s POVThe moment I stepped out of the glass tower that held Diamonds, the city felt suddenly different. The air was cooler. Sharper. Like something had shifted… something beautiful. It was difficult to explain and my head refused to even process it. But it was there in my heart, like a seedling waiting to germinate.A smile covered my face as I shook my head at my own thoughts. It was crazy to even start imagining but one thing was certain, I wasn’t going to let this one go.I slid into the backseat of the black sedan waiting at the curb and shut the door.“Call Lila,” I said to the car’s voice command system as I loosened my tie.The line clicked twice before her voice came through, crisp and curious as always. “Hi, Wes, what’s the update? Did you do it?”The cheerfulness in her voice, stretched the smile I had further. “No, I didn’t. Plans have changed.”“Oh, did something happen?” She chirped in, her excitement dropping from her tone.“Yes, something actually did ha

Natalia's POVLila's words still rang out in my head as we packed our devices and prepared to head out of the building.I kept asking myself the question she had thrown at me. Why didn't I try harder? He had already pointed out the angle he was taking. He already gave me access to all the documents.I had lawyers and people— maybe even smarter people— in my corner but somehow, I still let him help. Why?And then again, she had mentioned the repercussions it was going to have on him.A frown had sat on my face ever since she had asked that because as hard as I tried, I couldn't think of anything that we weren't already solving. If it was about a scandal, our visit to the station to deliver the evidence we'd found should clear that. Lila wasn't referring to that.So what could it be?"Earth to Natalia?" Wesley's voice cut through my thoughts.I blinked and found him standing before me with a smile. "You look lost, what is it?"My eyes met his and for a second I wanted to tell

Robert's POVThe moment I read the news from the blogs, I knew there was going to be trouble.Ciara was so dumb and useless. I should have never done business with her. I should have known that all she was good for was a nice fuck and nothing else! The imbecile even went ahead to send video evidence to the police just to impress Wesley, who was obviously playing her!"Stupid bitch!" I cursed as I ran my fingers roughly through my hair.My thoughts were rushing as I tried to think of my next move because I knew that this foolish decision Ciara had taken was going to seriously affect me if I didn't counter it soon.My goal and mission to take over the Carson group would all be ruined and it would be her fault! That stupid dumb bitch!I already had Natalia at a tight corner. She was like a mouse that had nowhere else to go but run back to me but somehow, Ciara was opening an escape plan for her."Stupid bitch!" I cursed over and over again as I paced, glaring at my phone— hoping

Natalia's POVThe room went eerily silent, except for the sound of my laptop fan and my racing heart. My thoughts slowly, as it took in the information on the screen, word for word.Robert Brooks— he was the founder, funder and beneficiary of the organisation. And it was linked with everything.Every case of child labour, child trafficking, missing fund— everything pointed back to this organization and not even Diamonds. It was almost as if Diamonds had always been the cover story, because who would think a charity organization would commit these crimes? The evidence was right there, under everyone's noses, yet, no one cared to check. Till today."Wesley," I whispered, still breathless from the shock. "This could change everything..."He nodded, his eyes never leaving the screen. I could see how tightly he clenched his jaw in a silent fury, yet he nodded once more."You are right... We have enough to start connecting the dots." He straightened up and moved to his side of the t

Wesley's POVHer question threw me off focus. My lungs suddenly constricted as I tried to process the best answer to give to her. Yet none came.My mind just remained numb."Wesley, please I really want to know. Is this about your brother— is this just about him?" She added, her voice cracking with so much emotion I felt myself drifting.I was lost staring at her. My heart raced with feelings I couldn't dare let out. The space between us suddenly began to shrink even though neither of us moved. The words formed in my head. They seemed simple but there was something in the way that she looked at me— something that made my throat tight with fear.Surely this wasn't the right time. I couldn't tell her what I truly felt. Not now."Wesley, you are risking your life's work. Your company. You are risking everything... And I am supposed to believe it's for me— someone you barely met a couple of weeks ago?" She said in a quiet voice that shook my ear drums.I wanted to tell her that I k

Natalia's POVLila's words tore into my ears like a silk of blades. The jagged marks leaving a scar deep inside me that made my head blank. For seconds I couldn't think. My head just stopped working. Her voice was the only thing I heard..."You have made it clear that you don't want him to help you." Lila went on, "Please, I need you to stop him before it's too late."It was true that I said I didn't need his help. But— that was because I thought he was trying to come after my father's money somehow...I didn't know he was throwing away his life for— me?"Here," Lila said, passing me a card. "That's our office. I have already made an appointment for you to meet him in two hours. Please make it count."With shaky hands I collected the card from her and flashed her a tight lipped smile."B—but Lila, what about our case? How are we going to get past this?" Mr Marcus asked her.But she packed up her things and flashed him a tight lipped smile. "My boss already got the video eviden

Natalia's POVI didn't want to dispute my father, so as he mentioned Wesley, once more, I simply forced a smile."Okay, Dad." I mumbled, knowing deep down nothing was okay.So as soon as he left my room, I sprung into action. I packed up my laptop and my phone into a small bag, then made my way out.I made sure to use the back door, so that no one would really pay any importance.Since it was already afternoon, my father would be sleeping and Theresa would be too busy prepping the food for our next meals. The rest of the workers only came for a few tasks here and there, none cared about what I was doing or none of them had the audacity to ask me.Using this opportunity, I slipped out and ordered a ride for myself, since taking one of the cars would draw too much attention.Once my ride arrived, I changed my destination just in case anyone decided to follow us. "Please take me to the cafe right after the fifth avenue."The driver mumbled a reply but I wasn't too focused on my p

Natalia’s POVThroughout the night, I couldn't sleep. My thoughts kept going back to Robert's offer. As absurd as it was, it was the quickest way out of this problem— a problem he most definitely created just to put in the condition I was in right now.I sat up on my bed, staring at the stock charts. Every second I spent not making a move, my father's companies dropped further. The longer the scandal existed, the deeper Diamonds ultimately got buried. And the solution was in my hand. What could I do? What option did I even have to begin with?Aside from Robert's offer, there was also the option to just plead guilty and serve my term. We could hope that the world would grow past the incident or they would maybe grow sympathetic with me...And maybe the stocks would stabilize. Maybe my father wouldn't have to lose everything he had worked for. But, that option was also one my father had forbidden me to take. He had made me promise not to even think about it.Yet I couldn't help
