Kiara’s POV I wasn't sure how much time had passed before the door clicked shut behind the doctor, but if the tension that clung to the air meant anything, I told myself that it was a lot. Too much time even if you asked me. It might have looked like the doctor left with just the vials in his hands, but actually he left behind the faint echo of his words and the heavy silence that followed. My heart was still pounding, no matter how many times I tried to calm it down, but it wasn’t from hope anymore. It was from the storm threatening to rip the room apart.Darius and Rhian were still squared off, with their shoulders tense, and eyes glinting with dangerous sparks. They hadn't moved since the doctors last words, and even after I'd done the small but probably unnecessary favor to see the doctor off to the door, none of the men had moved a muscle. In fact, if I didn't know better I would say they weren't even breathing anymore. They hadn't spoken either, but I just knew that one wro

Kiara’s POV The door creaked open before I even realized I’d been pacing, and a part of me hated that I didn't know if that was a good sign or not. Darius stepped in, shoulders squared, but there was something in the way he carried himself that told me the meeting hadn’t gone well. I'd told myself to remain positive and what not before he arrived, but one glance at his countenance was more than enough to bury whatever positivity I was trying to gather. His eyes found me quickly, but instead of relief or warmth, all I saw was the storm he hadn’t managed to leave behind. Something has definitely happened at the meeting, and it was nowhere near good. “Darius,” I breathed, hoping my voice sounded steadier than I felt. “You're back. How'd the meeting go?”Darius didn't answer immediately, and for a second, I was this close to thinking that perhaps I'd done or said something I shouldn't have. A couple of seconds passed before he gave a curt nod, pulling off his cloak and tossing it c

Darius' POV Running towards news that Kiara wasn't okay wasn't how I expected my day to end. at. Not at all. It was one thing that the council had gotten on my nerves and I'd lashed out on her, and it was something entirely different to hear that something had gone terribly wrong. I probably wasn't going to admit it until now, but I kind of regretted the fact that I'd yelled at her. I didn't mean to. I was just so mad that the council would even dare think like that, so I took it out on her. On the other hand, I didn't think she was going to do something as reckless as what she'd just done. My legs pressed down against the stone floor as I inched closer to my destination. I was literally running at my full capacity, but I felt like a turtld stuck in quick sand. I tried to distract myself. Maybe if I didn't think about it so much, I would arrive at my destination sooner. My mind however, didn't agree to that. All it wanted was to torture me. I'd been training at the fields when t

Kiara’s POV The words left my lips before I could second guess them, and even after they'd hung in the air and probably register in Darius' mind, it still didn't make it any better. “I want you.” The words echoed all around me, and for a quick second, I was this close to face palming myself in shame. “I want you now.”Darius froze above me, his eyes dark and hungry, but his hand cupped my face so gently it made my heart twist into ways I didn't even know was possible till now. “You’re weak,” he rasped, his thumb brushing my lower lip, and I had no other choice than to melt into it. “Are you strong enough for this? Tell me the truth.”My body still ached, but my need for him burned hotter than the soreness.“Yes. I need you, Darius.” I nodded, swallowing hard. “Please.”Another wave of silence stretched between us after that. This time, he held my gaze like he was torn on what to do. I wasn't a mind reader, but I just knew he was holding back, and probably trying to keep his se

Darius' POV Her breathing was steady against my chest, slow and unbroken. I hadn’t moved all night, terrified that if I loosened my grip, she would vanish, that this fragile peace would dissolve into the nightmare I’d been replaying since she swallowed that vial. She'd crept onto my body after ourr little adventure on the desk. I wouldn't say crept though, since I basically had her splayed on my body after we'd both caught our breaths. I had no idea how a simple bath had escalated to that point, and even as I had fucked her senseless, I wasn't sure I had enough of her. I wanted her over and over again, like an addiction I wasn't sure I wanted gone. A small gasp slid past her lips, and that was all it took to pull me out of my thoughts. Seeing Kiara sleeping peacefully filled me with a kind of joy I just couldn't explain. My hand drifted down her spine, tracing the soft rise and fall. She looked untouched by the chaos of yesterday, lips parted, with her lashes brushing her cheek.
