Freya’s POV“I said I’m fine,” I repeated, softer this time. She hesitated for a few seconds, then nodded slowly.But I could see the suspicion, the questions crowding her mind, and the growing distance. I turned away before she could read more meaning into my facial expressions.“I need to handle something in the lower quarters,” I said. “I’ll be back very soon.”“Again?” she asked quietly, like the thought of it was already irritating her. Guilt stabbed through me as I tried to pretend all was well.“I won’t be long,” I said, avoiding her gaze, as that would have a way of exposing me.“Freya,” she called before I could leave.I paused in my tracks, waiting to hear what she would say.“If something is wrong…” she said softly, “you’ll tell me everything, right?”My chest started heaving painfully.“I will,” I lied just to get away from her.
