The apartment became quiet after Justin left for school, and everything felt different. Lillian had been awake since six. She had made coffee and sat with it on the dining table until it went cold. Then she went into her room and opened the drawer where she had hidden the folder. She brought it to the kitchen table and waited for Jessie. Jessie finished with her morning routine and came out around eight-thirty in her robe, her hair loose around her shoulders. She had expected an ordinary morning where she would make breakfast and fresh coffee. Then she saw the folder, and her facial expression changed. Lillian noticed the change in her expression before she forced her face to be normal. Over the past few months, she had been at Alex’s, and she had learned how to recognize the moment before someone lied. She had watched powerful men hide the truth behind calm faces and steady voices but noticed their lies. She saw it now on Jessie. “Sit down,” Lillian said.Jessie slowly sat, h

A week later, Lillian started to notice some small changes in her body. At first, she didn't pay attention. It wasn't something serious or painful, it was just some symptoms that made her uncomfortable even when she tried to ignore them. She observed it hoping it was her monthly cramps but her period never came. She slept and still felt tired in the morning, ate a lot of snacks at odd hours, felt nauseous unexpectedly, and managed to go about her daily activities like normal. She got Justin ready for school. She answered her messages. She expected to see her monthly flow but when it didn't come, she told herself it was a result of stress waiting for her monthly flow, or that her cycle was changingHer skin glowed, her breasts were sore and her mood shifted easily. She noticed she got easily irritated and bloated. On the sixth day, she woke up before sunrise. Everywhere was quiet. She lay still, watching the ceiling, feeling weak. Alex still hasn't reached out to her and from the ne

Alex didn't hesitate for a moment. The moment Lillian fainted, he forgot about every other thing. “Lillian,” he called. Her skin had gone pale and her body leaned on him. Without waiting for his bodyguards, he lifted Lillian and carried her downstairs himself. Her head fell on his shoulders and her hair on his neck.Alex's heart pounded hard in his chest. “Open the door now,” he ordered. The bodyguards rushed to open the door. Jessie grabbed Justin’s hand and followed them downstairs together with the bodyguards. The elevator was a bit slow and Alex was beginning to lose his patience. “Hell no!”He looked at Lillian, “Come on Lillian,” he said. The elevator door opened and he rushed out of the building and into the car. The ride was very quiet and everybody stayed still. Justin didn’t cry because Alex assured him it wasn’t serious so he went completely quiet instead. Alex took her to one of his private hospitals. For only his relatives and closest associates. The moment the c

A pregnancy test box that was wrapped in a tissue paper had two lines on it. She slowly reached out and picked up the test. Jessie stood still with her eyes fixed on the test strip.Suddenly, everything started to make sense. The fainting.“So this is why?” she whispered.“Now this explains the fainting, the doctor's attention, and most especially Alex’s attention.” She paused, her eyes darting around the room. “So they all knew and kept it a secret.”“Lilian is pregnant with Alex. She's carrying Alex's child. Wow. This has scattered my plans. How would I squeeze myself into Alex’s life?”She looked at it. Both lines clear. She quickly took her phone from her pocket and snapped it. She walked to the edge of the bathtub and sat down there, looking at the photo on her phone. She sat there for a long time deep in thought. She felt hurt and humiliated. Just a few days ago, Lillian was furious about seeing a pregnancy test strip with her and was angry she didn't confide in her but she kne

Jessie arrived at nine in the morning. She looked fine. Lillian knew that was not the truth. Jessie was trying so hard to conceal how she felt. Jessie was good at hiding her feelings. She could be filled with rage and boiling inside of her but on the outside, she's the complete opposite. Jessie came into the hospital room wearing a baseball skirt and a crop top. She had packed her blonde hair into a ponytail and had a little bit of makeup on. Jessie held two cups of coffee and a paper bag from the shop on the corner that made the pastries Lillian liked. To anyone who did not know Jessie, she looked like a sister who really cared. One couldn't tell the difference. Lillian watched Jessie come into the room. Felt a lot of different things. She felt love for Jessie. She felt sad at the same time. There was something too something that Lillian did not really understand yet.“Someone is recovering.” Jessie smiled. “I’m serious you look better" she said as she placed the coffee on the tab
