BEHIND BARS

Grayham’s POVBefore leaving the hospital a while ago, I had spoken to the doctor about Alex’s condition. He told me the man would come on at his own time. He was still unconscious and would remain monitored in a private ward for now.Since he had access to private care, I decided to head back home and get some supplies. He’ll need some fresh clothes and other stuff. I don’t intend to open the cafe today. I can’t manage on my own because my mind might not be at ease knowing that Alex was lying in that ward, unconscious. I’m not Miles. I’m sure if he was in my position, he’d come back home and open the café because he’ll need money to sort bills. I don’t need money and I simply can’t keep up.I’ll just shut the darn place. I smiled when a realization hit me. If Alex was conscious, he would have asked me to leave him in the hospital and carry on with the café business but maybe it’s time that place closes for a day for a change. I had just dropped off a cab and was crossing the

THE HISTORIAN

Grayham’s POVI stayed in the dark for hours, unable to sit on the stained floor or lean against the sticky wall. I’m not sure if this cell is ever cleaned because it stinks.I’ve heard of people being crouched in cells, especially prison cells. I’m just glad I was the only one remanded in this particular police cell. Nevertheless, I was still trying to keep up with the smell of bodies that had been there.I’m not sure what time it was but I could tell that it was noon. I’ve been in here for hours and right now, I could see gold patterns reflecting on the floor. They were evidence of the sunlight being filtered by the only window. When the officer cuffed both my hands earlier. He dragged and shoved me into his car like I was some criminal and then he drove straight here. His colleagues had then pulled me out of the car and laughed. He told them I was a crazy youth who wanted to lay my hands on him. He didn’t even tell them what I saw him doing. I wasn’t expecting him to do so anyway a

A WEEKEND GETAWAY

Mile’s POVThe alarm clock struck 6 am and the buzzer came on but I didn’t flinch nor open my eyes.I slept till 8 am. It was a Saturday which meant I didn’t have to wake up early, get dressed, and go to Grayham’s office to play the businessman.I got up, stretched, and decided to go downstairs and grab a cup of coffee. I had a coffee maker in my room but I wanted to use the opportunity of grabbing a coffee in the kitchen to say hi to Graham’s Granpa.I didn’t want the old man to think I was avoiding him because he had seen less of me in the past few days. With the company board doubting my skills, the last thing I wanted was the old man growing suspicious.I traced my way to the living room and saw Grayham’s Granpa fully dressed. A domestic staff was dragging a luggage bag toward the door.“Hey, son!” He adjusted his hat with a warm smile.I went to meet him. Sometimes, he addresses me as a son. While on other days, he’d simply call me ‘my boy’“I couldn’t speak to you yesterday. You

THE RESEARCH

Grayham’s POVWhen I walked into the living room, I didn’t waste a moment there. I just aimed for the staircase and marched straight to my chamber. I heard Mile’s feet clicking right after me.I got to my door, gave it a slight push, and then walked in.My eyes lit up and my heart leaped for joy. For some reason, I had a feeling that Miles was going to tamper with my room but nothing changed.I moved to the window, parted the curtains, and looked down at the lit city. I love standing here with a cup of coffee in my hand and just staring down at the city.My PS5 station was intact and my closet seemed well arranged. Normally, I’d ruffle the closet when picking an outfit and when the cleaners come to take care of my room, they’ll fix it. I’m sure Miles wasn’t giving them much trouble. He seems like a proper guy.I turned around and saw him standing by the door, his arms folded across his chest. He immediately looked away, preventing our eyes from meeting.I can’t believe I’ve lived in t

A CALL FROM THE HOSPITAL

Mile’s POVThe alarm clock struck 6 am and the buzzer came on. I sighed and then tried to stretch. I was unable to stretch my other hand and when I looked down, I realized that it was tied up to Grayham’s arm.My jaw almost dropped to the floor when my eyes widened and I realized that we spent the night together, hurled up on the same bed. After a series of searches that ended up with a riddle, I went to bed while Grayham stayed up. I guess he got tired and finally joined me and now, his hands are legs were tangled with mine.Grayham wanders in his sleep because I’m certain he slept on the other side of the bed but now, he was on my side, his legs sprawled on my body. He was shirtless.I was about to remove my hand from the entanglement when his eyes opened. He looked up at me. His warm breath spread on my face and he abruptly sat up.“Sorry.” He said and pulled his legs from my body.I immediately got out of bed.Should I greet him or go ahead and ask him whether he found anything la

I HATE YOU

Grayham’s POVImmediately after I dashed out of the mansion, I boarded a cab to the hospital. The driver sped all through and in a few minutes, I was running toward the entrance.Weeks ago, if I was told that I’d be running helter-skelter for a stranger, I wouldn’t agree but now, I can’t believe I’m going crazy because of Alex.I hurried past the reception and then got to his private room. I opened the door but Alex was not there. The room was empty.I stepped out in confusion and was about to charge toward the doctor’s office when I saw him coming toward me. I hurried to meet him.“Where is he?” I demanded the moment I reached the doctor. He sighed and immediately turned around. “Come with me.” He said and began walking toward his office. “Your father was just transferred to the ICU.” The doctor supplied.“What?” We both stopped. “ICU?”The doctor shook his head. “I’m very sorry, Miles but right now, he’s in a critical condition. Earlier, we detected movements from his monitor and we

HE IS GONE

Mile’s POVI stormed out of the café in a fit of rage. If I thought Grayham was selfish and mean, then he had just proven to me that he was worse.Didn’t he learn anything from this? Are we not in this situation because he wanted to demolish the house? Does this mean that he doesn’t believe all those articles we read about the curse?I sighed and continued walking toward the street with my jaws clenched in annoyance.I can’t believe he just asked me to sell the house. As much as I know my dad, he’d rather die than allow me to sell the house. But he’s not going to die.I’m going to make sure that I save him even if I have to do the unimaginable. After all, he was my dad, not Grayham’s.I made it to the street and was able to get a cab. Right now, there’s nothing that will put me at ease than seeing my dad but then, I can’t just show up like that in the hospital in this body.Or maybe I could.I got into the cab and told the driver to drop me at St. Francis Hospital. It was a short ride

WHAT POWER CANT BUY

Mile’s POVWith my knees glued to the floor, I turned around and saw Grayham looking at me with the tail of his left eye.I turned away from him. Right now, I just wanted to tear off my clothes and yell. When people talk about carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders, I used to think they were exaggerating misery or responsibility but right now, I was already having a glimpse of what it takes to carry the kind of weight that no one would understand or extend a helping hand to.My dad was gone!Nobody is coming to save me. I lifted my head and caught Grayham towering above me. At this point, I don’t mind if he thought I was a weakling for crying this much.I had just lost the person that mattered to me the most. I was alone now.I proceeded to wipe my tears with the edge of my palm while avoiding Grayham’s gaze.“I’m sorry.” He said after breathing a heavy sigh.I turned to him and I could bet that he had shed a tear because his eyes said so.Was he acting up? I can’t trust

NAVIGATING GRIEF

Mile’s POVI walked into the café and met Grayham seated at the first booth by the right. It was past 8 pm. I waited for everyone to leave before I walked in. “I asked everyone to leave. I hope you don’t mind that I kind of chased them.” Grayham said when I entered. “I told them that I needed some privacy.”I went to his table and sat on the chair facing him. “It’s fine.”I know how this community works. I’m sure Grayham was bombarded with a lot of visits from the day it was announced that my father died. He must be overwhelmed. On the other hand, I could use some silence too. Earlier, I had watched Grayham give a speech and then throw a handful of sand on my father’s coffin. Then his body was lowered into the ground and amidst the wailings and prayers, I just had to retreat. I had gone back to the cab and sat.At one point, the driver left me in the car to take a walk. I had booked the cab for the whole day.Grayham stood up and while I remained there, lost in thoughts, he return

TRAPPED IN WRONG BODIES

Grayham’s POVI tossed from one edge of the bed to another, trying to fall asleep but sleep evaded me. If I believed in ghosts, I would have said that Alex was haunting me for playing the ideal son poorly. With my back glued to the bed, I stationed both hands on my tummy and gazed at the rotten ceiling. I was so used to looking at it now to the extent that the sight no longer abhors me.I immediately turned around. Or maybe, it abhors me. I’m just trying to keep up.I spent the whole night unable to fall asleep and since I had no plans of opening the café soon, I decided to stay in bed this morning.I wasn’t hungry neither was I satiated. I was feeling in between. Imagine being stuck in this house playing the role of a dead man’s son to the extent that it was starting to feel real.I sighed and decided to go to the couch. Maybe, I’d be able to fall asleep there.I got to the couch and curled up. A few moments later, my eyes began to shut. I threw the blanket around myself and wondered
