Chapter 1

"How could that witch hang up on me?" Zach Carter's grip tightened around his phone as his expression darkened with fury. He dialed over and over again, but each time, he was met with the cold, robotic voice of an automated system. In frustration, he slammed the device onto the floor.Meanwhile, Zayla Scott lay weakly in her hospital bed, barely able to speak. "Zach, it's fine... It's my fault. I couldn't carry this child to term.""And it's not like I'm bleeding out. My water just broke. It's early labor, that's all. There's no need to make such a big deal out of it and drag Joey here."Zach's heart clenched painfully. He reached out and grabbed her hand. "Don't worry, Zayla. Even if Joey doesn't come, her son is here. Eugene's RH-negative blood type means he can donate if needed."This baby isn't just yours; it's ours. I'll protect both of you."Eugene Carter bounced up and rubbed his face against Zayla's. "Don't worry, Mommy Zayla! Daddy and I will protect you and the baby!

Zach carefully leaned Zayla against his chest, picked up the bowl of freshly stewed chicken soup from the table, and blew away the rising steam."You must be starving. You're still so weak—you need something nourishing," he said."I want the chicken soup Joey used to make," Zayla whispered as she settled into him."Her soup was always perfect for me. If I have that, I'll have the strength to bring our baby into the world." As she spoke, her hand absentmindedly brushed against his.Zach flushed and quickly pulled out his phone to call Peter. He barked, "Have you found Joey yet?"If you have, tell her to make some chicken soup and deliver it immediately. Zayla's waiting. Move faster!"Peter sounded frantic on the other end. "Mr. Carter, we can't find Mrs. Carter. She's not at Mrs. Larson's grave."Zach's frown deepened, and his voice grew sharper. "What about the zoo's animal care room? Isn't she always there?""She's not there either..."Fury flared in Zach's eyes. He roared, "

"Spit it out! What's going on? What happened to Joey?" Zach snapped. His face was twisted with impatience.Peter's voice trembled as he said, "Mr. Carter, the surveillance footage shows... Mrs. Carter appears to have been dragged into an alley..."Just then, a video popped up on his phone. The words hit Zach like a punch to the gut. His hand instinctively reached for the phone, ready to dial the police.Zayla leaned in to get a look, but her voice was soft and almost soothing. "Zach, don't rush. I saw Joey yesterday. She seemed drunk and was stumbling around."With the way she was acting, she probably went to a bar to find someone else—"Zayla suddenly fell silent and covered Eugene's ears with her hands. With a worried expression, she whispered, "Sweetheart, you shouldn't hear this. It's not for kids."Zach's expression darkened with fury. "So this is what she's doing behind my back, huh?"Eugene shoved Zayla's hands away and snapped, "That shameless woman! What a disgrace! Dad

Zach froze the moment he heard the news. Without a second thought, he rushed out of the hospital room and headed straight for the zoo.Upon seeing this, Zayla quickly reached out to stop him. "Zach, wait! Please take another look at Elly. Joey's the zookeeper. Those animals would never hurt her."Zayla's face had gone pale, and her body was trembling uncontrollably. She couldn't let Zach find out I was dead."Zayla, why do you look so pale?" Zach asked."Dad, are you out of your mind?" Eugene interrupted. "Mommy Zayla just had a baby! Of course, she's weak right now. You should find Joey and have her make some chicken soup for Mommy Zayla!"Before Zach could respond, Eugene snatched his phone from his hand. "Mr. Stewart, how much did my mom pay you to help her with this act?"Eugene grinned mischievously. "Me and Dad will pay you double what she did!"I couldn't help but laugh at how much Eugene sounded like Zach, from the tone of his voice to the expression on his face. This w

I followed Zach into the police station, where he begrudgingly answered the officer's questions. The officer, keeping things formal and serious, said, "The nature of the case is still unclear. Whether it's an accident or a murder is still under investigation. "However, based on the ID found, we can confirm that the deceased is your wife."Zach's anger flared instantly, and he snapped, "I've told you a hundred times—my wife is not dead! Why won't you listen to me? Those people were the ones she hired to trick me!"The officer shook his head in resignation. Stepping closer, he patted Zach's shoulder with a sigh. "Please accept my condolences. Don't worry too much. The law will make sure your wife gets justice."Zach shoved the officer's hand off his shoulder and said coldly, "Don't speak so definitively. If this isn't my wife, you can expect a lawsuit."He insisted on waiting for the autopsy results.Eugene tugged at Zach's shirt. "Dad, is Mom really dead? I don't want her to lea

As Zach drove, his phone suddenly chimed with a new email. He frowned in confusion before opening it.In an instant, his gaze froze, and the steering wheel jerked, sending the car swerving dangerously.Eugene jolted awake, rubbed his eyes groggily, and looked at the phone in his hand.It was the surprise I had so carefully prepared. The email displayed an unmistakable pregnancy test result, showing that I was pregnant.Almost immediately, a video began to play—there I was, smiling brightly and beaming into the camera."You've always wanted a baby sister, right? Well, here she is! Eugene, you'd better take good care of her!" I said excitedly.Eugene burst into tears at the sight. "Dad, Mom didn't really… is she okay? I want to go home. I don't want Mom to be like that… all limp. I want Mom, Dad. I want Mom."Zach's face paled, and he immediately dialed my number again. But, of course, no one picked up."You're already a mother of two. Why are you still acting so childish?" Sweat

The next morning, the police summoned Zach to the station. As soon as he stepped into the lobby, he spotted Dad. Dad's eyes were bloodshot with grief and rage, and his face was twisted in anguish.Zach's chest tightened. Before he could react, Dad lunged at him and slapped him hard across the face."My daughter was my precious sweetheart! I trusted you with her—trusted you with all my heart! And look what you've done! "You desecrated my wife's grave, and now you've killed my daughter! She gave up so much for you! You heartless bastard—give her back!" Dad's voice trembled with fury. The slap made Zach's head snap to the side, and his cheek instantly began to swell. But he barely noticed it. His face was frozen in shock as his eyes widened."What… what did you say? Joey's dead?" he stuttered. The officer beside them shook his head in resignation. "Mr. Carter, the autopsy results are in. DNA analysis confirms that the deceased is your wife, Joey Larson.""She suffered unimaginabl

Zayla's heart skipped a beat. "Zach, what are you doing?""What am I doing? You killed my wife. Of course, I'm getting my revenge—by the same means you took her," he said with a sneer.Zach's gaze was sharp and devoid of any emotion. "Enjoy the consequences of your own actions!"The group of people surged forward, and Zayla tried to scream, but a hand quickly covered her mouth. Zach, ever the gentleman, closed the door behind her, then immediately sank to his knees before my room."I'm sorry, Joey. You don't blame me, do you?"After a long time, he dragged Zayla away and drove straight to the zoo.Tears streamed down Zayla's face as she pleaded, "Zach, please… let me go. We have a daughter! Think of her! Do you want Elly to grow up without a mother?"Zach threw his head back, laughed bitterly, then roared in fury, "When you killed Joey, did you ever imagine this would be your fate?"Growing up without a mother? Ha! So Eugene wouldn't need to fear growing up without one, huh?"

My soul slowly drifted back to Dad.He stood alone at the cremation site, where the air was thick with an almost suffocating silence. The faint sounds around him seemed to tear at his heart. With shaking hands, he reached out and touched my urn. His eyes were clouded with pain and the kind of sorrow that made it hard to breathe."Sweetheart… go on, don't worry. The ones who hurt you… they've gotten what they deserve." His voice was raspy and low. His face, drawn with exhaustion, showed the weight of his grief."You've gone, and now… my heart feels hollow. It's like the world's lost its color." His voice broke, and though tears welled up, they never fell; he stubbornly held them back."Don't worry about me. I'll be okay. I'll take care of myself. But no one will ever speak to me like you did… no one will say those things that made everything better."I know you want me to be alright over here. I will, I promise. I'll live my life carrying you with me and keeping you in my heart.
