Selene’s POV The fire in the brazier had burned down to almost nothing, only black smoke curling up to meet the shadows I had summoned. They lingered still, whispering, taunting, reminding me of the one thing I couldn’t escape. Her. That damned wolf. I clawed at my skin, as if I could tear her out myself. “Why won’t you die?” My voice cracked as the words left me. My knees gave way, and I collapsed against the cold stone. Sweat plastered my hair to my face. The chamber smelled of blood and ash, the residue of every failed attempt. I had pushed harder tonight than I ever had before. My body shook, my bones felt hollow, and yet… she was still there. Weak, trembling, but alive. The scream ripped out of me before I could stop it.
