Chapter 1

Once I joined in, more people stopped by to watch the drama unfold. Heather Marsh, my husband’s childhood friend, invited him and all of the guests who were cheering for her into the church before she came to me. “Don’t be mad, Naomi. Liam and I are just putting on a show. “If you can’t accept it, I can tell everyone about it.”I nodded and motioned for her to do it, but Heather was stunned. Liam Xavier, my husband, pulled her behind him and glared at me in displeasure. “I’m just helping her. Don’t you have any sympathy? Is being jealous the only thing you can do?”I simply smiled. “Well, then. I suppose I’ll give you my blessings. I hope you two have a baby together soon.”Liam’s expression soured, and he dragged me to a corner. “What’s the meaning of this, Naomi?”I said nothing. It was my birthday yesterday, and I had made arrangements for us to celebrate it alone. However, he told me in a panic that something had happened to his mother and he needed to go back. I

Chapter 2

Right after I opened the door, I saw my mother eating biscuits and gravy. I felt my heart jump to my throat.“Mom, didn’t I give you money? Why are you still eating these things? They’re not nutritious at all!”Since my mother was not expecting my return, she was delighted. “Why the sudden visit, Naomi? Where’s Liam?”As I stared at her graying temples, my nose burned. Over the years, I had been busy earning money and getting into Liam’s good graces. But I neglected the woman who had given birth to me and brought me up. So, I made up my mind: once I filed for divorce with Liam, I would have my mother move in with me to take care of her. “I haven’t eaten anything yet. Why don’t we eat out?”My mother shook her head at that idea. “That’s such a waste of money. Wait here. I’ll cook something for you.”She then hurried into the kitchen. But when she opened the fridge, all she found were pickles and some wilting vegetables. “Yeah, we should go out.”This time, I did not give h

“Make some tea now, or I’m firing you!”Mia slapped my mother so fiercely that her right cheek became swollen immediately. “Mom!”I was shocked, and I immediately rushed over to support her. Then, I glanced at Mia and the large number of relatives behind her before growling, “I’m giving you one minute to get out of here, or I’m calling the police!”Mia was not afraid in the slightest. Instead, she placed her hands on her hips and laughed. “Who do you think you are? How dare you order me around?“My son-in-law bought this house for me. Even if the police come, they’re going to arrest you two for barging in.”I was so angry that my chest heaved, and I glared at Liam. “So, you have nothing to say to me?”Liam’s expression soured, and he walked over to my side. Just when I thought he was finally going to be truthful, he shoved my arm. “Quiet! Why are you yelling at the guests when you’re just the nanny’s daughter?“You’re both fired! Leave now!”When Mia heard this, she imm

Liam stood still, as if he was worried that things would blow out of proportion even more. At the sight of his hesitance, Mia suddenly clutched her chest and started moaning. Right then, every trace of hesitation evaporated from his face. “Mia, are you okay? Naomi, leave with your mother, now!”At that moment, the anger I had vanished. All that was left was disappointment and resentment toward Liam. The ambulance arrived on time, and my mother survived. As I watched how all sorts of tubes were inserted into my mother, I slapped myself in the face. The man whom I had loved for five years nearly got my mother killed!I really wanted to ask Liam whether he loved me and why he married me in the first place. However, asking those questions at present would be meaningless. When I walked out of the ward, I gave him a call. It went through, and I heard Heather’s disdainful voice. “Naomi? Liam’s taking a shower. You’re going to have to wait. Honestly, your house is really comf

“I’ll take accountability for what happened to your mother. No matter how much money you want, I’ll do my best to pay, as long as you make it up to Liam. “If you’re still angry, you can hit me in your mother’s stead. I won’t complain about it.”Heather’s method of sowing discord was as good as ever. With just a few words, she managed to make Liam displeased with me again. Regret shone in his eyes as he held Heather’s hand. “Don’t worry, Heather. You and Mom did nothing wrong. I won’t let you take accountability.”Then, he glared at me and said, “That’s enough, Naomi! Heather already apologized! Why won’t you just overlook this?!“I shouldn’t have brought her over to visit your mother! What a waste of time and my love for you!”As usual, Heather gave me a really smug look. I had seen them play off each other like this multiple times. In the beginning, I felt jealous and angry. But that gradually turned into mental fatigue, and finally, I felt nothing. In the end, I paid a

I did not even know what to say to Liam’s shameless response. “Forgive me? Liam, this isn’t a problem that can be solved with your forgiveness. I’ve asked my lawyer to send you the divorce papers. Remember to sign them.”Heather seemed to realize that I was really angry this time, and she anxiously said, “Are you angry because I faked a wedding with Liam? Don’t worry. I’ll go back and tell everyone that I’m not really married to him. Just don’t hold my mother accountable.“If you don’t believe me, I promise that once my mother’s home, I won’t meet up with Liam again.”Heather spoke so sincerely, but I was already sick of those words. After all, she used this tactic often. Whenever she mentioned cutting ties with Liam, he would just protect her even further and do whatever it took to fulfill her wishes. Naturally, it was the same this time. As if something had triggered him, Liam screeched, “Are you done throwing your tantrum, Naomi?!“Heather and I are just friends. We’ve

“I’m Rivas, your junior. Don’t you remember me? We took part in Professor Hewitt’s research topic together.”Right then, he began to seem familiar. “I wasn’t expecting you to be so amazing now. You’ve become quite the famous lawyer.”Rivas smiled bashfully at my praise. “You’re amazing too, Naomi. I heard that you’re a department supervisor at a Fortune 500 company.“I wanted to continue working with you after the research topic ended. Unfortunately, I went abroad as an exchange student soon after.“By the time I came back, you had already graduated.”Rivas seemed to find the situation truly regretful, and I was stunned. For a time, I did not know how to continue the conversation.Fortunately, Rivas changed the subject. “By the way, I heard that you’re filing for a divorce. What’s going on?”I nodded and told him everything that had transpired between me, Liam, and Heather. Rivas listened patiently, but he still seethed with anger. “How could he not know how to treasure

I laughed. “Oh, sorry. I forgot. We never celebrate such a stupid anniversary anyway. “Besides, my birthday was long ago. I don’t have the habit of celebrating it later.”“Naomi…” Liam still had something to say, but I did not want to waste my breath on him anymore. “Just sign the papers,” I said and hung up. I also blocked the number. However, after I got off work the next day, I found two unwelcome guests at home. Liam looked haggard, and Heather was not dolled up like usual. The circles under their eyes were so dark that they looked like they had been punched. By the looks of it, these past few days had not been easy on them. Good. I felt great seeing them suffer. The moment Liam saw me, he said, “Naomi, I’m not mad at you anymore. Could you stop this tantrum?”I scoffed and coldly said, “Why do you still think I’d care whether you’re mad at me or not? I believe I’ve made myself clear. “Liam, I’m telling you right now. I don’t love you anymore, and I want a divorce

Heather’s face turned red. “Enough!” Liam suddenly shouted. He pointed at me as he hissed. “Why have you become like this? “You want a divorce? Fine. But I’m not the one walking away with nothing. You are.“If you won’t agree to it, I’m not signing the papers.”I laughed at his words and coldly reminded him, “I suppose I am the one who made you this overly confident in yourself. “Right now, you have no grounds to negotiate with me. “You don’t want to sign the papers? That’s fine. I can sue you too. After all, I’m not the only one who saw you marry another woman while you’re still married to me.”All of Liam’s haughtiness bled from him like air from a popped balloon. He scowled, though he was rendered speechless. As I watched these two deflate in defeat, I told them to get out. “I’ll give you three days to think about it. You can leave now.”Liam squared his shoulders. “This is my house too. You have no right to chase me out.”Unbothered, I shrugged. “You can stay, but
