Chapter 1

I used to be treated like a princess in Lumenclaw Pack. But the first day after my eighteenth birthday, my Alpha dad brought home a charity case—Callie from the welfare center.Everything flipped.Ryell, my own brother, ditched me for her.Jovan, my future mate? Shielded her.Even Dad called her sweet, kind—"a thousand times better than you."Graduation Day. Strike 101. They picked her. Again."Aren't I your real family?"Dad hesitated—but only to hide Callie behind him like some precious thing. Her fake tears. His real slap."Such a petty wolf. I wish I'd never had you."Ryell sneered, "Having a sister like you makes me sick. Get out!"I didn't scream. Didn't cry. Just packed and walked. They thought I'd break like always—cry, forgive, crawl back. But not this time.I called my mom. Took her offer. Moved to her distant pack.If they wanted me gone, wish granted. So why the hell did they come begging when they realized I meant it?..."I'm moving to Stormcrest Pack, Mom."Silence—then

Chapter 2

I rubbed my frozen hands, sprinting through the snow to grab ingredients.Back home, I wrangled the shrimps, skin flaring in angry red welts. Fingers throbbing.Didn't matter. This was the last dinner I'd ever choke through with Dad and Ryell.By the time I dropped the garlic shrimp on the table, they were all cackling in the living room.Dad, usually stone-faced, was warm with Callie.Ryell leaned in close, telling her about his day. He took an orange from her hand. "Our little princess shouldn't be peeling fruit. You've got piano hands."Jovan came too, with his parents. They clearly wanted Callie as Jovan's mate, not me.He sat next to her like she was the only one in the room. When juice hit her lip, he wiped it with a handkerchief. Gentle. Careful. Like she might shatter.I stood there. Invisible. If Callie was in the room, I didn't exist. The living room buzzed with laughter. The dining room? Cold.Hard to believe that seat used to be mine.I was the one they once a

I headed to my room, patched up my arm, and started packing.Screw waiting three more days. That slap? It shook me clean. No one in this house wanted me here.Better to leave on my own than wait for the day they threw me out like garbage. As I packed, it hit me—barely anything here was mine.Since Callie moved in, Dad and Ryell stopped giving me gifts. Even my allowance dried up.I'd been juggling school and part-time shifts just to survive. Barely home these days.Maybe that was a blessing—less to carry. My eyes landed on an old photo. And yeah, it punched me in the gut.Years ago, Mom broke the mate bond with Dad. Then she left for Stormcrest Pack's Alpha. When the news dropped, Dad cried all night. He held Ryell and me close, voice shaking as he said he'd failed as a mate. That's why Mom left. But as a father? He swore he'd do better. Swore he'd protect us no matter what.Ryell—tiny, fierce—clenched his fists and promised to be my knight. Said he'd keep his little sister

Finally packed.Just one suitcase—everything else? Left it behind.I scribbled a note for the maid: [Trash the rest.]Dragging my suitcase down the stairs, I froze at the corner. Voices.Dad and the others—back with Callie. They came in from the far side of the house, still clueless I was here.Their voices spilled into the hallway."Lucky you barely ate any. Just a mild allergy. If it'd been worse, I wouldn't have spared Maria.""She crossed a line. She owes you a real apology. From the heart."Callie's voice, all sweet and fake: "No need. I'm sure Maria didn't mean it."Ryell jumped in, all protective big brother. "Callie, you're too nice. Maria doesn't deserve that. Didn't you always want her garden? Make her hand it over as an apology."Dad looked like he might object—But then Callie lit up. "Really? I've always wanted to go in there, but Maria never let me."Dad smiled. Said nothing. Which said everything.A sharp stab hit my chest. They didn't care. Not even about

Chapter 5

I blew the last of my cash on a sketchy hotel. After trudging through the storm, I crashed with a brutal fever that night.Half-conscious, I kept calling for Dad. For Ryell. Then remembered—I was on my own now.Forced myself to ask the staff for meds. Two days blurred by in a haze.By flight day, I still felt like hell.Didn't matter. I dragged myself to the airport anyway.Right before boarding, a video popped up in chat app—Callie. She was lounging in my old garden, flowers everywhere.Dad and Ryell were helping her move stuff around. She giggled in a voice message. "Maria, the garden's mine now. Jealous? They're even taking me to the beach—said it's been too cold lately."I smiled."Congrats. You got it all."Then I blocked the number and tossed the phone. Didn't even flinch.***After swapping out all Maria's flowers for Callie's, Matthew and Ryell took her surfing at the beach.By day three, Ryell was twitchy. Kept checking his phone like it owed him answers. Noth

Chapter 6

"Mom, seriously—I'm stuffed.""You've barely touched your plate," she frowned. "You're way too skinny. It hurts my heart. Just tell Liam what you want—he'll make it."Liam pulled Mom into a one-armed hug. "Okay, darling. I'll whip up a whole custom menu just for Maria."She looked so happy, it made my chest loosen a bit.I thought settling in would be hell, but Stormcrest Pack was really warm and solid.Mom and Liam were all-in on making me feel safe. And my stepbrother Lark? He was the kind of protective that didn't smother. After lunch, Mom nudged Lark to take me out to the amusement park. I was down—needed to get a feel for this place anyway.I rode shotgun while Lark kept pointing out every bakery like we were on some pastry pilgrimage.I laughed. "I get it. I'll try one later, okay?"Liam chuckled. "Lark's never this chatty. He must really like you—trying to bond."Lark rubbed the back of his neck, a little sheepish. "You're sweet—of course I like you. Always wanted a li

Chapter 7

I sank into my warm bed, totally at peace. Hadn't thought about Callie or the others in forever.Out of curiosity, I opened the social media app and logged into my old account.Messages flooded in—classmates asking where I disappeared to.[Your dad and Ryell are freaking out. They've been searching everywhere.]I blinked at the screen. Why now? Why were they looking for me?Did they still expect me to apologize to Callie? After everything?I left. Gave her my whole damn life on a silver platter. No way in hell I was ever saying sorry.I shut the app and closed my eyes—for once, I actually slept easy.Time flew. Once I found my footing, I threw myself into school.Liam brought in a top-tier professor to guide my research while I chased a higher degree.***Christmas hit fast—and so did my birthday.I shuffled downstairs for breakfast and froze. A gorgeous three-tier cake sat in the living room. That's when it hit me: it was my birthday.Back then, after Dad adopted Callie

Chapter 8

Dad stormed in like a thundercloud, eyes blazing, locked on Mom. "Alice, we had a deal—Maria's custody was mine. How dare you steal my daughter?"Ryell trailed after him, throwing Mom a wounded glare. "Dad's right. How could you hide her from us? We've been searching everywhere."Mom didn't flinch. She slapped Ryell hard across the face."You made a vow, Ryell. You swore to protect Maria. This is your idea of protection? Standing by while some outsider tore her down?"Her gaze snapped to Callie, lurking at the edge of the room."Don't think I was blind just because I wasn't there. I know everything. You don't get to touch my daughter again. She'll stay with me forever."Liam and Lark flanked me in seconds.Lark growled, "You threw Maria away—and now you've got the guts to barge in and bark at Alice? Pathetic."Liam stayed calm, but his voice hit hard. "Maria's everything—sweet, strong, full of heart. Thanks for handing me the best daughter I could've asked for. We treasure her

Chapter 9

They didn't stop. They showed up at my school. Knelt in front of me. Begged. But I was done. I wasn't going back. The last time, Dad stood there with tears running down his face. "Maria, please. Just one more chance. We're blood—your real family."I stared at them for a long second before saying, cold as frost, "If I had a choice, I wish Liam had been my father."Maybe that one hit too hard.Because after that, they disappeared. Then Jovan came.He stood outside my villa all night, drenched in rain, waiting to see me.He apologized. Meant every word. But why should I forgive him?Yeah, we were close. But the betrayal? That was real. The pain? Real. There's no going back from that.Let him carry that guilt forever. He stayed around for a while—until his father, humiliated to see the next Alpha of Moonspire Pack begging like a broken rogue, had him dragged away. Not long after, I got the news.He was dead. When Callie's lies finally crashed and burned, she knew Lumenclaw
