Chapter 1

Fire had broken out in the pack.My parents, worried for their pups rushed into the flames to save us. No. To save them. My brother and sister. My father picked my brother up and my mother grabbed my sister and rushed out, but I was left behind. Many werewolves arrived to help put out the fire.“Is there anyone else inside?”The Elders arrived, asking urgently. My mum immediately looked over at Dad and hurried over to count all her pups.“David, Eva; both of them are here. Everyone’s here!” she said with a sigh.“Are you sure no one else is inside?” the Elder asked mum and dad again. But Mom’s eyes were fixed only on my brother and sister. Her eyes filled with worry as she checked for injuries. She didn’t respond to the Elder.“Good… good, everyone’s here and no one is injured," she said with a sigh, then she wrapped her arms tightly around them. You could see relief on their faces. As the words left her mouth, I stumbled out of the flames covered in burns and soothe. Hearing her wor

After our den burned down, finding a new den to live became a challenge. Dad said, "It's hard to find a new den, especially with three pups. We'll have to take two and send the other one away for now." At his words, my heart sank. I realized that they wanted to abandon me.As soon as my dad's words left his mouth, everyone turned to look at me. I gave a bitter smile. I was right. Sure enough, I'd be the one to go. In the past, I would've thrown a tantrum, acting spoiled and crying loudly until they let me go with them. But I felt it was useless.Self mockery wretched through my wolf. It was sad that I had to resort to that to get their love or care. But my brother and sister never had to resort to that; they just got what they wanted and my parents always took their side and cared for them.I knew it was useless to throw a tantrum anymore. I had finally understood that I would never be as important to them as my brother and sister. So, I simply nodded and stepped back, saying in a

The basement was a frozen cave, the door a flimsy barrier against the biting wind. The cold reached my bones, making me tremble. My skin itched.Wrapped in a tattered quilt, my wolf felt the urge to cry. Tears slowly made their way down my face, snort following soon after as a cried for a while. But I soon stopped. It was hard to keep warm and I was getting thirsty. My mouth felt dry and I was suddenly desperate for any kind of water. But when I thought of going upstairs to get water, I feared that my uncle would catch me and I would be thrown out. I heard the rain falling outside, so I stepped out. There, one spotted dirty water leaking from the drains. A stray cat was lapping it up. Watching the cat drink, my thirst got worse. I immediately knelt and joined the cat.Who cared about dignity. I could not afford to care about dignity. Survival was all that was on my mind. The water was cold, but it quenched my thirst. So, I stood up and wiped my mouth. But the moment I looked up, I fo

When I woke up, I found myself in an odd room.A healer smiled brightly at me when she saw me move.“You’re awake!” she said and helped me sit up.I nodded and thanked her.“Please, do you know who brought me here?” I asked her.“Your family, of course," she answered.I paused at her words. They did? It was hard to believe they actually took me to the healer. My wolf felt odd and confused.Just then, the healer hesitated, as if there was something she wanted to say.But after a pause, she just patted my hand gently and said nothing.“You were really weak, so we just gave you a glucose drip. You’re too thin. You should eat more from now on.” she said. She looked at my wrist with worry and pity in her eyes, then she left. I could tell that was not what she wanted to say, but she had already left.Pity? Sure, my situation was pitiful. For some reason, my eyes filled with tears and no matter how I tried, my wolf felt the urge to cry.I quietly cried myself to sleep.Later, the healer retur

I stared at the silver pendant, frozen in confusion. I didn't believe for a second that he was here to help me — and I was right. My brother sneered, his lips curling into a mocking smile. "You wander around like this every day, collecting trash? It's embarrassing for our clan. I won't tolerate it," he said.Without warning, he swooped in and snatched the bag of bottles and cans I'd spent hours gathering. He handed it off to a nearby scavenger, an old she-wolf with a cunning glint in her eye. She snatched the bag and scurried off, thanking him hastily. My wolf was livid. Shame? This was my only hope of living one more day yet he was ashamed of it? I angrily protested and grabbed for the bottles. But ended up grabbing at my brother's sleeve, but he shook me off with disgust. That bag was my livelihood for the day, the few coins I'd earn from recycling would've bought me a meager meal. My eyes filled with tears. Frustration tore at my wolf. Why was he doing this to me?Now that he’d

I was not sure how long I walked. The wind and rain hit me on my way back to the basement. The despair I felt, tore though my wolf. I curled up on the damp bed in a daze. For a while, my family did not look for me. I did not bother going out to search for food. I was not going to live long anyway. Hunger had turned to weakness and I could not even stand. The wolves bane was slowly killing me.One day, I heard my sister's voice up the stairs of the basement. It seemed they had come to find me."Does she live here?" My sister asked."Can you believe how ungrateful Daisy is? We give Uncle a lot of money every month to take care of her, and she still embarrasses us like this, running off to get someone else to raise her!" My brother answered.Suddenly, my sibling’s voice echoed at the entrance to the basement den . Then it gradually faded.Their words stung my wolf. So they had paid uncle money yet he acted as though I was a burden leaching off them. I wanted to laugh out loud but I was
