Chapter 1

I crouched in the corner, my heart in my throat as the sound of footsteps grew nearer."Congratulations, Mr. Willowstream. You have one wife at home and another abroad. It must be nice!" a subordinate teased. My heart clenched painfully. Then, I heard Arnold Willowstream chuckle. "Nonsense. Yasmine stood by me when I became a cripple back then. That's why I agreed to marry her. She truly loves me and would give up everything for me."But Juniper will always be the one I love. No one is to mention this to her—ever."His voice was gentle, firm, and sharp as a blade carving straight through my heart. He used to bring me my favorite coffee every morning. On my birthday, he filled the sky with drones and prepared a sea of flowers just to tell me how much he loved me.Then came the accident. That terrible crash hurt his legs and made him a different man altogether. As the boss of a mafia family, he couldn't accept becoming a cripple. His personality changed overnight. He started push

After signing the divorce papers, I pulled myself together and decided to return to the medical research team.Yasmine had always been better at winning people over—even our parents showed her more affection, even though I was also their daughter. Every time I went home for the holidays, their faces would stiffen the moment they saw me.Eventually, I stopped feeling much for that family. Before I got involved with Arnold, I had planned to further my studies in medical research. I gave up my career for him. Now, it was time to start over.As it happened, my mentor was preparing a classified project in Alpene. I applied and was quickly accepted into the team.In three days, I would be heading to a secret base for closed-door research work.It also meant I'd be leaving Arnold and starting a new chapter in my life. However, just two days before my departure, Arnold unexpectedly returned home. He looked at my packed suitcases in confusion."Juniper, where are you going?" His voice

But the only thing I got was his retreating back.I saw him scoop Yasmine into his arms and run toward safety through the flames. He didn't even hear my cries for help.In that moment, something inside me died.…When I woke up again, I was lying in a hospital bed. There was only one day left before I was supposed to leave.Arnold sat at my bedside, looking at me with pain written all over his face."Juniper, you're finally awake!" He gripped my hand tightly, his eyes filled with remorse. "I never imagined you'd be in the house. I thought you were still in the garden! I would've saved you first otherwise…"I quietly pulled my hand back and turned my face away. "I understand. You don't need to explain."He let out a long sigh, then added, "Yasmine is still a child. Whether in terms of emotion or reason, I had to save her first. I know you've always disliked Yasmine because your parents favored her over you. Still, she's your sister."And I'm older than Yasmine—how could I just

What I didn't know was that three hours earlier, right after Arnold left my hospital room, he had already found Yasmine in an abandoned warehouse. When he found her, she was curled up in a corner, trembling with fear.Arnold held her gently and murmured, "It's okay now, Yasmine. I got you."Yasmine clutched to the hem of his coat and cried, "Arnold, I was so scared… That explosion… I thought I'd never see you again."He patted her back and said firmly, "I won't let anyone hurt you ever again."Though he had comforted her, Arnold felt a growing unease. He thought of me—the woman who had always waited for him with quiet devotion—but who now had grown so cold and distant. As he decided to return home and check on me, Yasmine held on to him."Arnold, don't go. I'm scared to be alone," she pleaded, her gaze full of dependence as she clung to his sleeve.Arnold felt a bit helpless, but he didn't want Yasmine to suffer any further harm."Yasmine, rest for now. I'll just check on Jun

Arnold's hands trembled slightly. The divorce agreement beside him felt like a blade, slicing through his heart."Why would she sign this?" he roared, eyes shifting to Jeremy as though ready to devour him. "Why?!"Jeremy timidly kept his head down, not daring to speak. With nowhere to vent his rage, Arnold looked at the ruby necklace in his hand. Suddenly, something came to him. This necklace had a built-in micro-camera. It had recorded everything. He rushed to grab the projector and cast the footage onto the wall. The screen was blurry at first, but gradually cleared.Yasmine and I appeared in the footage.Yasmine's face twisted with malice, her words filled with contempt. "Juniper, who do you think you are? You've always been a piece of trash that no one ever liked!"My expression was calm, but my eyes held deep sorrow."Yasmine, I don't want to argue with you over something so meaningless. Don't you feel guilty, interfering in someone else's marriage?""Guilty?" Yasmine sn

The iron rod howled through the air, landing heavily on Yasmine's arm."Ah!" Yasmine let out a piercing scream. Her arm immediately fractured and hung limply at her side. However, Arnold had no intention of stopping there. His eyes were filled with rage and madness as he struck Yasmine repeatedly with the rod."You vile woman! You will pay for the pain Juniper suffered!"Not only were Yasmine's fingers smashed, but even her toes weren't spared. She curled up on the ground in pain, her cries growing weaker and weaker.Still unsatisfied, Arnold stomped hard on her legs. With two sickening cracks, Yasmine's legs were broken under his foot."Lock her in the dungeon. No one is to see her without my permission!" Arnold gasped as he gave the order to the nearby special forces soldier. The soldier nodded expressionlessly, dragging the unconscious Yasmine away.Arnold then slumped to the ground, his heart filled with regret and fury. He pulled out his phone and dialed that familiar numb

"Juniper, let me explain!" Arnold's voice carried a hint of desperation. "That really was a misunderstanding. I mistook her for you because I was drunk!"I sneered coldly, my eyes filled with disdain. "A misunderstanding? Arnold, do you take me for a fool? You were with Yasmine for five years. You had countless chances to end it, but what did you do? Not only did you not stop, but you even married her!"My voice trembled, and tears welled up in my eyes. However, I stubbornly refused to let them fall.Arnold's face grew paler. He let go of my wrist and let his hands drop weakly at his sides."Juniper, I know I was wrong. I really do. But Yasmine and I have been over for a long time. You're the only one in my heart. Please, believe me."I glared at him, turned sharply, and spat, "Arnold, I will never believe you again. Never!"However, just as I took a step, he grabbed my arm again."Don't go, Juniper. Just give me one chance—just one! Let me explain, please?"I struggled to brea

The months of torment left me nearly numb.Arnold's daily self-harm, Yasmine's weeping—everything felt like a nightmare I couldn't wake up from. The madness in Arnold's eyes gradually gave way to emptiness. He seemed to be questioning whether this torture still held any meaning. Then, one day, he finally broke. He collapsed to his knees before me, gripping my shoulders tightly, his voice hoarse as he demanded, "Juniper, what will it take for you to forgive me? Do you want me to die in front of you?"I stared at him coldly and spoke slowly, "Arnold, let's play Russian roulette. We take turns pulling the trigger. If we both survive, then maybe that means the heavens have forgiven us."His face instantly paled as a flicker of fear flashed in his eyes. However, he quickly composed himself and shook his head. "No. I won't let you take that risk."I looked up indifferently. "What's the matter? Are you afraid? Or are you just too much of a coward to face your sins?"He clenched his jaw
