Sara's eyes flashed with fury as she clenched her fist with her voice trembling with rage. "Y-You think I'm crazy? You're the one who abandoned me for years! You just walked away without even talking to me."


Rachel's face twisted in disgust, her lips curling into a snarl. Her head shook violently, as if trying to shake off the memories. "There was no point in talking, Sara. You hurt me so much that I couldn't even speak about it. You haunted my dreams and took everything from me. I just wanted to be free of you."


Sara's sneer was venomous, her voice dripping with malice. She flipped her dull brown hair over her shoulders with a defiant flick, her eyes blazing with contempt. "Oh, poor you. You're so perfect, but you're all over the gossip blogs, labeled as a cheater and a whore. I thought your marriage was perfect."


Rachel's face reddened, her cheeks burning with anger. Her arms crossed tightly over her chest, her fingers digging into her skin like claws.

Rachel's hands trembled as she ascended the stairs, her breathing labored. She struggled to process Sara's words, her mind reeling with shock, she knew she shouldn’t have expected anything from her but she thought that maybe for a goddamn moment, she would act like an adult. 


A proper one who took responsibilities. 


She slided her fingers against her cheek to dab away the last of her tears. Sara wouldn’t look back so why should she care?


They both had their own separate lives.


She reached the top of the stairs and was about to reach into her pockets for the sliding access card that Nathan gifted her with before they both boarded the flight to Las Vegas when her gaze fell upon the pigeonhole beside the door. The brown envelope protruding from it caught her attention, and her heart skipped a beat. She hesitated, wondering if it belonged to Nathan, but quickly dismissed the thought. He hadn't bothered to check on her or communicate with her in days; why would he send her anything

Rachel trudged through the front door of Tina's cozy apartment, her eyes red and puffy from crying. The luxurious items scattered about the living room seemed to mock her, a stark contrast to her current mood. Tina greeted her with a warm hug and a comforting smile, leading her to the plush couch. Tina was dressed in a washed up brown top and a knee length jean. 


As Rachel collapsed onto the soft cushions, her body screamed exhaustion and heartbreak. Tina sat beside her, offering a shoulder to cry on. "It's okay," Tina whispered, stroking Rachel's hair. "You'll get through this. You have gone through worse and you…"


“No, I didn’t.” Rachel turned to look the latter in the eye, “ I-I have never gone through a fucking divorce or a straight up insane ex.” 


The pain was still raw and fresh in her memory and she tried severally to breathe like a normal functioning person but she couldn’t. Tina handed Rachel a box of tissues, much later, and she blew her nose loudly.

Rachel's eyes fluttered open, and she sat up with a start, her nap interrupted by her sister's voice. The general ward's fluorescent lights hummed above, casting a sterile glow on the rows of beds. Sara's face came into view, her eyes sunken, and her skin pale.


"What on earth are you doing here?"


Sara's arms were folded across her chest, her eyes fixed on Rachel. "I don't remember how I got here. I don't remember much of anything. But what are you doing here, Rachel?"


Rachel hesitated, searching for the right words. She gazed at Sara's fragile form, noticing the significant weight loss and dark circles under her eyes. "I was worried about you, Sara," she said softly, her head bowed.


Sara let out a dismissive scoff, and Rachel's eyes met hers, filled with sadness. "You were worried...about me? I thought I didn't exist to you. I thought I didn't matter and wasn't worth anything."


The silence between them was palpable, punctuated only by the beeping of machines and the murm



Rachel moved fast, her heels clicking against the floor, her breath coming in sharp, ragged bursts. But no matter how fast she walked and ran, it wasn’t enough.


She had spent months carefully constructing a life where Nathan didn’t exist. Where his name was just another sound, and his face face just another stranger in a crowd. She had avoided the people who still whispered about their ugly, public divorce. And she had avoided, most of all, imagining what she would say if she ever saw him again.
