Chapter 11: The kiss that meant nothing

Lena's POV I froze when he said my name. How does he know me?Grey kept staring at me, like he was waiting for me to react. My heart was racing but I didn’t let it show, I kept my face calm and blank, pretending like everything was fine but inside, I was panicking. I gave him a smile and said, “You must be wrong. My name is Lena Roberts.”Roberts was my father’s last name. I had taken Adrian’s surname when we got married but no one knew that except Adrian. My parents had disowned me when I chose Adrian. They didn’t want anything to do with me after that.Damian stepped forward. “Stay away from my fiancée,” he said.He looked like he was ready to fight.“You’re not welcome here.”Grey smirked and pointed at Damian. “Fiancée? That’s funny, especially with your CEO position hanging by a thread. I know this is just a show But I’ll expose you.”The tension in the room was thick. I looked at both of them, hate was in their eyes. Whatever history they had, it was not good, there was anger

Chapter 12: A wedding full of secrets

Lena’s POVFinally it was the day of the wedding. I stood in front of the mirror, staring at myself. I looked pretty, my makeup was soft and light, my hair was neat and the white dress felt like a cloud around me. It sparkled under the light with little shiny beads and lace. I should’ve been happy but my heart was heavy.I touched my belly gently, I was already one month pregnant. I couldn’t really see it yet but I felt it. This baby was my only light in this dark time.Kate, my best friend, helped me fix the veil. Her eyes were watery as she smiled at me. “You look beautiful, Lena. So beautiful.”“Thank you,” I said softly, trying to smile.“You’re going to be okay,” she added, squeezing my shoulder gently. “Don’t overthink it, maybe being with Damian won’t be so bad.”I nodded, I wanted to believe her but deep down, I wasn’t so sure. The music started, my heart pounded as I walked down the aisle. Damian said it would be a small wedding but the hall was full and at least four hundred

Chapter 13: The pain

Lena's POVThump.Thump.Thump.Thump.My heart was beating so loud, I could hear it in my ears.My hands were shaking. I dropped my phone and it hit the floor..hard.Who sent me that message? Is it someone that knows me and Adrian? If Damian finds out… what will happen? What about my baby?I looked up. Damian and Carter both turned to me when they heard the sound. Damian asked, “Are you okay?”I gave a small nervous laugh and said, “Yes, I’m fine.”He didn’t look at me again, he just went back to his phone. Carter, my brother, kept looking at me. I didn’t know how to talk to him.I looked around the hall, everyone was smiling, laughing, talking. But me? I felt like a ghost at my own wedding. Alone and lost. After the church, Kate had to leave early. So I stood alone. I didn’t know what was worse, the message I just got or my brother, who knows my secret being my husband's best friend. My chest felt tight and I couldn't breathe well.I needed to leave, I needed air. People tried to t

Chapter 14: The space between us

Lena's POVThe hospital room was quiet. I could hear my own heartbeat. Damian kept looking at me, then Carter, then back to me, like he was trying to figure out what was going on."You two… know each other?" Damian asked, his voice low and full of shock. "And you let me introduce you like fools?"He turned to Carter and coldly asked, "She’s your sister?"I tried to say something, but Damian raised his hand. “Save it,” he said sharply. Then, he stormed out. He slammed the door so hard, the sound echoed in my head. Now, it was just me and Carter. My head still hurts, my body feels weak. I didn’t want to argue or explain anything.Carter broke the silence. “Last I checked, you were married to Adrian. What happened?”My heart jumped. I expected him to yell at me for being with his best friend.“It’s… a long story,” I whispered.“I see.” Carter nodded slowly. “I never liked Adrian for you.”I looked at him, confused. “Why not?”He shrugged. “That’s something Mum and Dad should explain.”I

Chapter 15: Honeymoon

Lena’s POVI woke up early the next morning, I barely slept at all because my mind kept replaying Damian’s words from yesterday.A trip to Italy. To anyone else, that might sound like a dream come true but to me, it felt like I was walking straight into a nightmare because I had a stupid and embarrassing secret.I hated flying. It wasn’t just a little fear, It was the kind of fear that made my stomach churn and my palms sweat until I felt sick. The last time I was on a private jet with Adrian, I had thrown up halfway through the flight. He later told his friends and they laughed about it.Damian didn’t know and I didn’t plan to tell him. He would probably just look at me with those cold eyes and tell me to get over it.I got ready slowly, dragging my feet. My suitcase was already packed by one of the maids, everything inside was neatly folded. When I walked downstairs, Damian was already waiting in the living room. He wore a dark suit that looked like it was made for him and sunglasse

Chapter 16: The uninvited guests

Lena's POV “I didn’t expect to see you here,” she said smiling widely, her eyes was fixed on Damian, completely ignoring me as if I wasn’t even sitting there.“Vacation,” he replied flatly. Her eyes finally landed on me and the smile on her face looked forced. “And this must be your wife.”"Yes, she is,” Damian answered, his arm resting lightly at my back. “Lena.”“Lovely to meet you,” she said reaching out for a handshake.I gave her a small polite smile as I shook her hand. “You too".She glanced between us. “Well, I won’t keep you, enjoy your dinner.” But the way she looked at Damian before leaving made me pissed off for some reasons.---When we got back to the villa, I felt uneasy. Damian walked in first, loosened his tie and poured himself a drink before dropping onto the couch. I passed him, heading for the stairs.“Aren’t you going to ask?” he said suddenly,I turned. “Ask what?”“About her.”I crossed my arms. “was I supposed to ask?"He raised an eyebrow, then he said “I j

Chapter 17: The attack

Lena's POV That was when the distant sound of voices echoed from outside, they were Damian’s security team, shouting in Italian. Flashlights cut across the balcony, blinding the men.The one holding me cursed and shoved me forward, sending me stumbling into Damian’s arms. Both intruders bolted for the balcony, leaping over the railing before the guards could grab them. By the time the lights came back on, they were already gone.I was shaking so badly I could barely stand, Damian didn’t let go of me, his grip was firm, his heart beating very fast.“They knew exactly where to find us,” he said finally, his voice low. “And that means someone close to us is feeding them information.”My stomach dropped. “You think… someone we know sent them?”He pulled back just enough to look me in the eye. “Not think, Lena. I’m sure.”“I’m sure someone is trying to use you to hurt me because we’re married. That’s why they tried to take you,” he said, his tone firm. “But don’t worry, I promise, I’ll ta

Chapter 18: Dead end

Damian's POV By the time I got to the private holding facility, the man was already locked in one of the secure rooms. He looked exactly like I remembered from that night, he was tall with broad shoulders, eyes that stayed cold even when he smiled.“Mr. Blackwell,” Alex said, opening the viewing panel. “He’s not talking.”“I’ll make him talk,” I said, walking inside. The man looked me over, smirking like he wasn’t the one in handcuffs. “Took you long enough.”“Who sent you?” I asked, my voice flat.“Wouldn’t you like to know?” he replied.I pulled the chair out and sat across from him. “You broke into my villa, you pointed a gun at me and your partner tried to take my wife. You better start talking"His smile didn’t fade. “You think locking me up will make me talk?”“I don’t need you to talk,” I said, leaning back. “I just need you to understand that you’re not walking out of here until you do.”Hours passed, and he said nothing useful. Just the same smug look, like he was waiting f

Chapter 19: The long game

Damian’s POVI stood there, staring at the body. My only lead was gone. The medical team confirmed it within minutes after they arrived.“Cause of death?” I asked. The medic hesitated. “Could be poisoning, we’ll know for sure after the autopsy.”“Poisoning?” Alex repeated. “We checked the food.”I turned to him. “Then someone got to it before we did.”The body was bagged and taken away. The room still smelled faintly of grease and salt but now there was another metallic and sharp smell, the smell of death that seemed to linger in the walls.Alex followed me out. “We had the food from the diner sealed until I opened it in front of him. There’s no way it happened here.”I stopped walking. “Which means it happened before the food ever reached us.”His jaw tightened. “Inside job?”“Not just inside,” I said. “Whoever did this knew exactly where he was being held and that he’d be asking for food today.”Alex frowned. “So someone’s watching us.”I didn’t answer but I knew it was true.------

Chapter 20: The fear I can't shake off

Lena’s POVBy mid-morning, the two bodyguards Damian had assigned to me were already waiting by the front door. Both wore dark suits and earpieces, standing perfectly still like they’d been carved out of stone.“This really isn’t necessary,” I muttered as I stepped outside. “Of course neither of them repliedThe ride to Kate’s was silent except for the occasional crackle from the guards’ earpieces. When we pulled up in front of Kate’s apartment building, she was already standing by the door. She froze when she saw the two men step out of the car after me.“What in the world…” she said, eyes wide. “Lena, are you...what's going on? is this some kind of celebrity security thing now?”I forced a small smile. “Not exactly.”She raised an eyebrow. “Okay… you’re coming inside right now and explaining.” She said dragging my hand.---Inside, her apartment smelled like coffee and vanilla candles. She shut the door and turned to me, crossing her arms.“Alright,” she said, “spill. Why do you
