I'll find another job.I have no choice.CHAPTER 4MorrisI don't visit seedy little bars unless I absolutely have to.But somebody has been moving drugs right under the Wolfguard Pack's nose. Normally, drug trafficking is what humans do. Some of our kind do get involved, but my father runs a tight ship. The Wolfguard Pack is one of the more dominant packs in Oregon. Doing business on our turf is allowed, but not when that business can bring attention to us or harm our kind. However, lately, a special drug has hit the market, and it's made its way into the underground clubs where shifters and other nonhumans like to party. A drug that is extremely dangerous to shifters in general.I went to the Silver Brawl to meet with one of my informants who had a lead. But he never showed up. However, during my half-hour wait there, I caught that first glimmer of scent that made my wolf anxious. It was only later, when I came across those men attacking a woman in the alley, that the pheromones tru

The boy's expression tenses, "Aisha's really nice. And she looks after her brother all by herself. She can't afford to move to another apartment. Henry and Bond were planning to go to her apartment and hurt her."The way he says 'hurt,' his expression darkening, the word sounding awkward, I know what their plans were."Why would they do that?"The boy gives me a tight-lipped look, "I'm not sure I should tell you."So maybe he's not all that naive."I want to help her, but I can't help her if I don't know how much trouble she is in," I reassure him.He hesitates, "I don't know the full story. Layla does. Bond attacked Aisha because she rejected him, and Henry and him were devising some plan to assault her and take her pictures so that - so that-"His face flushes a bright red, and he is unable to get the words out.He doesn't have to."I see.""Did this Bond also drug her?""Yeah," the boy nods. "Aisha looked like she wanted to kill them, but she didn't. I wanted to walk out as well, b

"Morris?" Finn sounds curious. "Everything good?""Yeah," I say slowly. Forget I asked anything.""Alright," my friend yawns. "Can I go to sleep now, or are you going to wake me up again?"I just ended the call.My mood was gloomy, and I kept looking outside at the passing traffic. Finn is right. I don't involve myself with females. So why am I getting so invested in this one?*** ***Aisha has stopped showing up to college altogether. On the fourth day, I ended up making my way to the administration office, "Sharon, I need some information on a student. She's not been showing up to my classes.""Sure, Professor Wolfguard," Sharon sits up, peering at me from behind her glasses. "Which one?""Aisha Hart."I see her fingers fly on her keyboard, and then she pauses, looking at the screen, "I remember her. Yeah, she was pretty upset."I frown, "What do you mean?""Well," Sharon looks up at me, "she wanted to drop your class and take another. She's a sophomore, and yours is a junior-level

AishaI look at the entrance of the restaurant. The White Lotus.I don't remember applying here, but the call I received last night is making me doubt myself. I did drop my resume at a job center. Maybe they passed it on to this place.Taking a deep breath, I open the door and walk inside. The White Lotus is one of those luxurious restaurants that only the wealthy frequent. Even as I walk in, I'm thrown into a glamorous world of golden chandeliers with a tastefully done red, gold, and black interior. The floor is made up of soft carpeting, and where the carpet stops, sleek marble begins. I'm so busy being in awe over the place that I don't notice the woman standing behind me till she clears her throat.I turn around to come face to face with a blonde-haired woman with pretty blue eyes, "Can I help you, Miss?"Her voice is polite, not a hint of disdain in her eyes at how shabbily I'm dressed as compared to her."I got a call for a job interview," I tell her. "My name's-""-Aisha Hart,"

The salary is twice that of what I earned as a bartender, and since this place is closer to college, I'll just be missing a couple of hours of work.My heart is beating wildly as I sign the contract.I don’t know what is happening, but it feels like a break, one of the biggest breaks I could ask for. However, as I walk out, I realize that I will still be losing my scholarship. My heart sinks. My hands curl into tight fists. Does this mean I have to go grovel in front of Professor Wolfguard?I don’t want to.Every fiber of my being is screaming against that. But do I have a choice?I let out a long breath. If I want this job, then I need to attend my classes. I have to put my own pride aside. I hate the idea of begging that man for anything. But for Harry, I'll do anything. As I take another step, I feel a wave of nausea come over me. Rushing to the trash bin by the open alley, I grip it, dry heaving. There's nothing in my stomach. Last night's dinner was long digested, but the pheromo

Her words make no sense to me, and I can tell she has no intentions of explaining anything to me."Go back to sleep. I'll leave some food for you two in the refrigerator."I just nod, my body still tired. Tomorrow's going to be another kind of hell, and I need to mentally prepare myself for that.As I head out of the kitchen, I find myself looking over my shoulder.Maddie is looking down at the table, her expression troubled.I just walk away.*** ***The first thing I do on reaching the college is head to the administration office where Sharon is sitting."Morning, Miss Sharon."The usually stern administrator looks taken aback when she sees me, "Aisha."I blink.I didn't know she knew my name. But then again, I do keep dropping by here quite frequently."I wanted to know if my application was processed. I handed it in a few days ago.""No.""No?" I repeat, confused and a little bit relieved. "It wasn't processed?""Your withdrawal form, right?" Sharon gives me a sharp look. "I lost

It's Clyde's hand that wraps around mine, a tight hold, and his voice is like whiplash, "You certainly must know a lot about the prehistoric era, considering that you dress like a fifties grandma."The girl's face turns a bright red."Enough!" Morris growls. He resumes the lesson, and I shoot Clyde a grin, "That was quick thinking.""And it wasn't a lie," he points out cheerfully. The class wraps up without any further interruptions, and by the end of it, despite my personal feelings towards Morris Wolfguard, I have to admit that he is a good professor, getting the course material across in a way that was both comprehensible and detailed. He clearly has a passion for the field. The problem begins when I head to Lydia to get the name of my assigned partner. Lydia gives me an annoyed look, "Oh, it's you. Aisha, right?""Yeah," I feel a little puzzled at her hostility. "I wanted to know who I'm assigned to."She runs her pen down the list of names and then gives me a sweet smile, "No one

My hand clenches into a fist. He wants me out of his class, out of the college, and now he's trying to sabotage my job? What proof does he need that I'm not some whore his father hired to lure him into whatever? I don't care if he's taken some vow of celibacy, or he's just unable to perform, or whatever reason, he has to believe that his father is throwing women at him. He doesn't have the right to target me for his own personal below-the-pants problems. If he thinks he's going to trip me up and try to make me lose my job, I'm going to give him the best damn service he's ever gotten at a restaurant, and then he can take it and shove it up his frigid ass. Pleased at myself for the little pep talk, I look at CeeCee, "Okay. I'll go over."I glance in the direction of the table and see Amanda leaning over the table, her first two buttons undone, revealing a bountiful cleavage, her pretty blonde hair falling forward in a golden waterfall, a coy expression on her face."I would really recom

"It's okay," CeeCee pats my shoulder. "A little wine isn't going to ruin your chances of staying here long term."As she walks away with the payment, I stare at the two hundred dollars in my hand before slowly pocketing them. I look over to see Amanda and Roger, another of the servers who isn't my biggest fan. They're standing near the bar. As much as I don't particularly care if anyone hates me or likes me, both of them have a good chance of affecting my performance review tonight. On top of that, Morris was necessarily harsh with Amanda. I recall the tears in her eyes as she fled. Maybe I should say something. However, as I reach them, Amanda scoffs, "I always knew outsiders are desperate little tramps. This is why your own pack is your own. You stole my customer!""I didn't steal anyone," I frown. "CeeCee told me to wait on him.""Oh, shut up," Roger snaps. "You were practically drooling on his shoulder.""I just did my job, and he didn't want Amanda to serve him," I point out calm

Both Amanda and Roger have dark expressions on their faces as I grab my things and head out a couple of minutes later. CeeCee is talking to them, her expression harsh.I don't wait around.I rush in the direction of the campus, knowing that the library is open for twenty-four hours. But as soon as I arrived, the first thing I discovered was that their computer systems were down.I close my eyes. How is this day going from bad to worse?CHAPTER 7AishaIt's getting late as I sit on one of the unoccupied tables, trying to write out my report by hand. The college library is the only one that stays open throughout the night, and I need access to the books I borrowed while compiling my notes.I glance at Harry, who has his head on the table, fast asleep.Maddie wasn't home, nor had she been picking up her phone. There was nowhere I could leave my brother. Fortunately, Harry seemed to understand that I was stressed out, and he didn't complain. I bought him a couple of sandwiches and snacks
