I got home and opened the door, only to be met with a blow to the head.Evelyn screamed, swinging a stick at me. "Get out, you filthy tramp! We don't need you!"Blood trickled from my forehead into my eyes, stinging like acid.I raised my arm to block her. "Enough!"She stumbled, the stick clattering to the floor. Then, like a switch flipped, she collapsed into sobs, wrapping me in a suffocating hug. "I'm so sorry, sweetheart. I'm sick. I didn't mean it."I closed my eyes, bitter pooling in my chest. "I understand. Can I wash my face first?""Go ahead." She let go, fidgeting like a guilty child. In the bathroom, I let the faucet drown out the world. Then I heard her voice outside. "She hides her emotions well. I hit her with a stick, and she didn't flinch. Isn't calling the loan sharks too much?"Alarmed, I grabbed my phone and bolted for the door.It flew open, and a gang of men in black stormed in, wielding baseball bats.Evelyn shrieked, yanking me behind her in a mockery

"No way! Natalie's the one who sold her kidney," Evelyn snapped, shoving Natalie aside to inspect me."She has lost a kidney," the leader confirmed. "Taking the other would kill her."Just as Evelyn's hand reached for me, Natalie cried out and collapsed, revealing a prominent scar on her abdomen. "Go ahead and take her to the hospital. She is faking to win your love."Evelyn flinched, rushing back to check Natalie's scar. "I almost fell for her trick. Don't worry. I'm taking you to the hospital now."She glared at me, full of disgust, as if she wanted to carve me up. "No money for Andre? But you have cash to bribe these people. You like selling kidneys? Lose this one, too!"My kidney was ripped out and tossed on the floor. My vision blurred as Evelyn cradled Natalie, leaving me to bleed. The leader sighed, slipping the kidney back. "I'm sorry, kid. We got paid to do the job. I'm getting you to the hospital."Ironically, the last shred of warmth in this world came from a stranger

Dr. Rufus Cooley sneered, "Isn't your sister standing right beside you? I don't get what you people want from the patient. If you don't like her, why show up here pretending to care? If you see her as family, why drive her to the brink of death?"He paused and added, "Do you know that because you pulled every doctor to tend to Natalie, she was left waiting in the hall, bleeding out? If not for a brave nurse who acted fast, you'd be looking at her body right now."Andre staggered back, his lips turning pale. "I thought she was after our money. I didn't know she sold a kidney for me."Rufus rolled his eyes. "Did you ever check on her health? After losing a kidney, she'd be weak. Couldn't you see that? The scars you left on her were so bad, but you couldn't even notice?"It hit Andre that I hadn't gone to work for days, barely able to cook for Evelyn. He had slapped me, told me not to act spoiled, and reminded me of my responsibilities.Overcome with regret, he slapped himself. "I'm
