I walk in to see a beautiful woman sitting behind a large mahogany desk, typing away on a computer. I can feel this sense of power and independence just radiating off of her. It isn’t until I attempt to walk past her, that she notices me. “I’m sorry but you need an appointment to meet with Lincoln. Walk-ins aren’t welcome.” I stand there like a deer in headlights, not knowing what to do or say at the moment. I felt instantly inferior to her. Thankfully, Lincoln shows up just in time - saving me from humiliation and the weight of his secretary’s intimidating nature. I can see that the years have been kind to him. Lincoln stood there in a gray satin-finish suit that complimented his tall and muscular frame while bringing out his piercing blue eyes. His black hair, combed back, giving him a professional but edgy appearance along with his chiseled jaw structure. If you didn’t know him, you’d assume he was malicious but that couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m taken aback by how w

Hearing from Jessie was a pleasant surprise but seeing her in the lobby of my private practice made my heart flutter. She was just as beautiful as the day I met her in high school. She wore a dress that complimented her deep green eyes, her long wavy black hair in a messy bun and her tiny but elegant frame. I remember how I always towered over her when we stood next to each other and it brings a soft smile to my face until I notice the dark circles slowly encompassing her eyes. Those weren’t there before. Jessie and I were always extremely close up until she got married to Alan. Then things started to change. She seemed more reserved around me when he was around - almost like she was going to be reprimanded or scolded like a child. And it got to the point where we stopped speaking altogether. And yet, here she is again. I invite her into my office and after an embarrassing setback with my freshly-made coffee and my pants, I hone in on every detail as she pours out every painful de

I couldn’t help but hold resentment and anger towards Alan as I escort Jessie to my car and open the door for her. What has he done to her? She was once so full of life and now, she was a shell of who she once was. Doubting her sanity, feeling paranoid, preyed upon and crazy. This isn’t her. Jessie doesn’t even look like herself anymore. She’s pale, her eyes are sunken in and dark circles have formed around them like she’s turning into a ghost. She doesn’t even smile like she used to. Jessie had a smile that would illuminate any room, filling every person she met with joy - including me. She laughed often and her laughter was infectious. We would talk and joke for hours on end. She was radiating and vibrant. It’s almost like he’s intentionally tormenting and draining the life out of her. It’s clear that he’s having an affair - based on what Jessie’s seen and received. Why not let her go? I start the car to bring her home - against my better judgement. I know that her home doesn’t f

After pulling out of Jessie’s driveway, I thought about heading back to my office. But it was late and the very thought of Jessie being alone with Alan made me uneasy. If something were to happen, I’d never forgive myself. So, I decided to round the block and park just a few houses from back from hers in the event that she might need me.I knew better than anyone when she wasn’t okay. And after her parents’ death, I felt that it was my responsibility to keep her safe. Jessie and I have known each other for more over a decade. I remember the very first day that I met her.It was autumn. The leaves were changing and street was covered in them. All in different shades of red, orange and yellow. Just like those old romance movies my mother loved to watch.I was walking back home from the park just two blocks down away and I saw the moving truck right next door. It was a week before the start of my freshman year in high school. I walked past them and into my house, heading to my room to se

After inviting Alan’s mistress to his birthday party, I watch my phone rest silently in the palm of my hand. I feel foolish staring and waiting for a response to appear from my husband’s mistress. She clearly said all that she had to say. Unless my response caught her completely by surprise?I decide to send the screenshot of our messages to Lincoln. This ensured that I would have tangible evidence of my husbands’ infidelities. Even if they disappear from my phone, they would be present on his. And Alan would be none the wiser.I see a response from Lincoln pop up on my screen almost immediately and find myself smiling. At least I’d have one friend at this party that I could trust and count on. I then quickly delete the text message thread from my phone and head upstairs to bed where Alan is already sleeping peacefully.Alan had escorted me inside but made no effort in convincing me to come to bed with him or try to apologize for what he had said about Lincoln, not that I expected him
