I couldn’t help but hold resentment and anger towards Alan as I escort Jessie to my car and open the door for her. What has he done to her? She was once so full of life and now, she was a shell of who she once was. Doubting her sanity, feeling paranoid, preyed upon and crazy. This isn’t her.

Jessie doesn’t even look like herself anymore. She’s pale, her eyes are sunken in and dark circles have formed around them like she’s turning into a ghost. She doesn’t even smile like she used to.

Jessie had a smile that would illuminate any room, filling every person she met with joy - including me. She laughed often and her laughter was infectious. We would talk and joke for hours on end. She was radiating and vibrant.

It’s almost like he’s intentionally tormenting and draining the life out of her. It’s clear that he’s having an affair - based on what Jessie’s seen and received. Why not let her go?

After pulling out of Jessie’s driveway, I thought about heading back to my office. But it was late and the very thought of Jessie being alone with Alan made me uneasy. If something were to happen, I’d never forgive myself. So, I decided to round the block and park just a few houses from back from hers in the event that she might need me.I knew better than anyone when she wasn’t okay. And after her parents’ death, I felt that it was my responsibility to keep her safe. Jessie and I have known each other for more over a decade. I remember the very first day that I met her.It was autumn. The leaves were changing and street was covered in them. All in different shades of red, orange and yellow. Just like those old romance movies my mother loved to watch.I was walking back home from the park just two blocks down away and I saw the moving truck right next door. It was a week before the start of my freshman year in high school. I walked past them and into my house, heading to my room to se

I watch silently as Lincoln’s car pulls out of driveway and finally allow Alan to gently escort me inside. I could see that Lincoln’s presence bothered him as he brought me to the couch to sit down.“Jess, I’m really starting to worry about you. You said you were to call Grace and I go upstairs to find that you’re gone.” Alan seemed concerned. And I would have believed him if I haven’t already known about the tracking device.“I just needed some air.” That was true. It just wasn’t the whole truth.“But you came back with Lincoln.” He’s says in a confused manner as though he couldn’t understand my behavior.“He’s just my friend.” And he’s also the only person that I can trust right now.“He’s not a good friend to have around, Jess.”“What do you mean by that?” I could feel anger flush over me. Alan was in no place to judge anyone’s character.“He’s got a reputation of being a ruthless lawyer for a reason. You can’t trust a guy like that. He sells his morals for money.” Just like how yo

I look at the small metallic nano chip in horror. Did Alan really put a locator in my phone? When was this installed and how did I not notice? Am I really that oblivious?“Do you really think Alan could’ve put that in my phone?” I ask Lincoln. I wanted his honest opinion.“Ivy, how much does one of those devices cost?” I watch as she analyzes it carefully before answering.“I’ve only ever seen one company make this locator specifically, it’s very advanced technology. It records and delivers live location feedback instantly up to exact centimeters to the registered user and it’s about ten thousand dollars.” She says as she places it on the mousepad on the desk, carefully.“In that case, yes. Alan has the funds, the means and a motive.” Lincoln answers without so much as a hesitation.I turn my attention back to tiny piece of metal. Was Alan using this to track my movements? Why would he do such a thing? Did he not trust me?This is terrible.“Jessie, I think it’s important that we put

Hearing from Jessie was a pleasant surprise but seeing her in the lobby of my private practice made my heart flutter. She was just as beautiful as the day I met her in high school. She wore a dress that complimented her deep green eyes, her long wavy black hair in a messy bun and her tiny but elegant frame. I remember how I always towered over her when we stood next to each other and it brings a soft smile to my face until I notice the dark circles slowly encompassing her eyes. Those weren’t there before. Jessie and I were always extremely close up until she got married to Alan. Then things started to change. She seemed more reserved around me when he was around - almost like she was going to be reprimanded or scolded like a child. And it got to the point where we stopped speaking altogether. And yet, here she is again. I invite her into my office and after an embarrassing setback with my freshly-made coffee and my pants, I hone in on every detail as she pours out every painful de

I sit in silence as I wait for Lincoln in his office. Twiddling my thumbs together out of nervousness as I see him enter the room with a new pair of slacks. Not only had I surprised him with my statement but I caused him to pour hot coffee on himself and then I embarrassed myself by patting near his bulge with my hanky. What was I thinking? “Okay, let’s back this up a few paces and start from the beginning.” Lincoln says as he’s sits down slowly beside me once again. “Okay. Sorry.” I take a deep breath, trying to contain my nervousness and begin recounting every little detail that I’d experienced lately. I made sure to leave nothing out. Once my verbal diarrhea ceases, I look directly into Lincoln’s eyes and see the utter shock in response to my confessions. “To make matters even more humiliating, Alan is now trying to convince me that I’m mentally ill but I know what I saw, Lincoln. He went into that hotel with a woman wrapped around his arm. And I had evidence from his myster
