I’d laid claim to her before the dragons just to protect her. Now I wanted to do it again, this time to take her from David. And even though I knew it was better for both our packs if I stayed away from her, she’d wormed her way into my head and populated the rest of my night with curious, hungry thoughts. I gave in to the thoughts, preferring them over the dozen other troubles that awaited me.Chapter 11: BillieDavid threw me into the foyer and slammed the front door. I knew he’d be mad, but I didn’t expect him to be violent The intensity of his hand against my shoulder resonated through me until I felt numb standing there in the parlor. He radiated heat behind me while I stared at the floor holding back all the excuses I’d composed in the car. I thought I’d be ready to face David, but what I didn’t anticipate was Colt beside me angry too, and I didn’t know if he was angry at me or something else. David stepped closer and both of us tensed.“Not only did you directly disobey me, but

I knew he meant well, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I couldn’t trust him completely. If he was keeping the same secret as David and Catrina, he was just as bad as them. I moved his hand off my shoulder and stood back. “I only have one chance at this.” Before I got the shock collar.“I know. I promise I’ll help you get away from here. Billie, I want you to be happy.”My guard lowered a little. Colt always cared for me more than anyone else. Couldn’t I trust him? I mulled on it for long seconds while Colt watched me decide his fate, finally I sighed. “Okay. I have some ideas.”Colt brightened. “Let’s make them happen.”Chapter 12: GavinMy bad mood and having to hide Muriel made me isolate myself from Catrina and Dalesbloom more than usual. Catrina reacted by insisting on seeing me, asserting that now it was more important than ever to mark each other. Every time I told her I had too much to think about, she suggested I don’t think and just let her distract me, but I knew she’d

Chapter 13: BillieUnder cover of rain, Colt and I stayed in my room and devised my escape. The manor was quiet with both David and Catrina gone, leaving us to plan without interruption to a backdrop of thunder and lightning, turning the world ominous as though to challenge whether or not I truly wanted to venture into it. I sat beside my window and watched the downpour, imagining myself caught in the rain, but only felt harmony with the weather. My wolf was growing restless; rain or shine, I wanted to be outside. After making a list of necessities that I’d bring in a backpack, Colt helped me figure out how to get the items. A paper road map of Coloradoa cheap rain jacket from a gas station in Dalesbloom, a bag of deer jerky Colt would put together ‘for a packmate’, an extra sweater—his. “I saw the gun on Catrina’s waist,” I pointed out. “Where’d she get it?”“Dad got a crate of handguns he’s been keeping in his office. I saw he’s given some to the perimeter scouts. I don’t think the

The fight raged through the forest as loudly as the night I’d fought the dragons. I recognized both Catrina and Billie instantly from their angry sounds, but the fear and desperation in Billie’s voice was far more compelling than Catrina’s tantrum; it fed my anger, even more, to think of Catrina taking our break-up out on her. Whatever the reason the runt was here for, it wasn’t right to let her get maimed from it. Catrina needed to learn that I was done with her for good, so despite feeling raw from ending our three-year relationship, there was no hesitation in the decision to turn my teeth on the Hexen. Arriving faster than anticipated, I slammed into Catrina and knocked us both to the ground. We scrambled for purchase against each other in a flurry of teeth and nails, and once I’d bitten her nose and forced her to withdraw, I glanced back to check on Billie—but she wasn’t behind me. She wasn’t anywhere in the darkness, only rustling leaves and foreboding silence cloaking the girl

Besides, a different part of me did want her. I wanted to channel my frustrations into touching, squeezing, and fucking her. I hated to admit those urges were what compelled me to shove her backpack against her chest. “Get dressed,” I grunted. “We’ll fix your leg at the pack house.”Billie stumbled back and tears caught in her throat. “Okay. Th—Thank you.”“Just hurry.” I didn’t want to be looking at her naked body any more than I already was. It was bad enough that my anger wasn’t the only thing of mine I couldn’t control.Chapter 15: BillieWhy hadn’t Colt warned me about the dragons all over Dalesbloom? If he’d been talking to our packmates or outside at all, he should have known the dragons would prevent me from escaping north. I would have gotten caught—killed, even. The way he stood there offering clothes to me, imploring me to come back after he’d spent all last night helping me devise my plan… it made me sick with anxiety. It was a miracle Gavin found me. I could be safe in Gr
