Mia's POV:Genevieve leaned forward just as Armani visibly froze. She squinted. “Who is that?” She asked.“Armani, Chloe's boyfriend.” Melanie supplied.Armani visibly froze. He stood there for a moment before hurrying. Melanie switched the camera just as Armani ran to the second locker. He quickly put the code and unlocked it.He took off his baseball hat and took a step back, still bewildered. Then, in a fit of anger, he kicked the locker.I winced, smiling. “That has to hurt,” I said.“What just happened?” Genevieve asked as Armani brought his phone to his ear.“Shh,” I said, lifting my hands to my lips. I pointed at the phone on the table. A few seconds later, it began to ring.I cleared my throat and picked it up. “Hello,” I said, trying to keep my voice very neutral. I hit record on the phone, putting it close to me.Melanie and Genevieve listened quietly.“Who the fck are you?” He swore angrily, pacing.I looked at the screen. “Someone who wants to pay you back for the nice gif

Mia's POV:“We'll need him to testify at the station. Recorded evidence. We'll have him redact his claim that Mia had killed Pedro.” Cassian explained.“It won't work,” I said. Regardless of the hope I wanted to feel, I knew that it wouldn't be that easy. “Armani won't give up his freedom that easily. The issue isn't with him anymore. It's with the Franz. We have to bring them down with him.”I didn't realize I was thinking like this. When I started, I didn't know. But, I couldn't stop now.‘You’re welcome,’ Cassey commented, letting out a gruff growl.‘This isn’t completely you.’ I retorted. ‘I’ve been studying the books that Jaxon tasked me to read.’“Mia is right,” Genevive said, her hand on her chin. She didn't fully know the plan so I was not sure how much of her opinion would count.“If you're going to take down that guy, you need to go for the one who sent him. The people backing him up. It's common knowledge. Do you want to take down minions? You take down their boss and every

Mia's POV:“Relax,” I said into the phone. “If you react badly, you can assure your girlfriend that I will be there to pay her a kind visit.”“Fck you,” he cussed.“That's better,” I replied. “Now, listen to the rest of your instructions.” When Jaxon was done relaying it to him, he said, “You have forty-eight hours to get us what we want.”“You can't be serious. Why would I want to do that when I framed her?” Armani asked. “You're telling me to turn everything around? It means I'll go to jail.”“You should have thought about that before you went around stepping on toes,” Jaxon replied with a deep growl.“Who the fck is she anyway? She just came around bugging my girlfriend. My boyfriend suggested that we frame her. I don't have anything against the woman. I swear.” Armani explained.I tried to decipher if he was lying. But the tone of his voice had a hint of fear. Armani didn't want to go to jail but would he also lie? If he was telling the truth, it meant that Chloe specifically want

Mia's POV:It took me a few moments but I was able to push a bit of the guilt away. I returned to the living room where they remained, talking amongst themselves. When they saw me, they immediately went silent.“I'm fine,” I said, assuring them. “It’s just hard to believe that I had talked to him yesterday and now, he was dead. It's a little too unreal.”“The Franz. They're the ones that finished him off.” Jace said. “They killed him, not you.”Even though I didn't completely believe that I wasn't at fault, I nodded. “What now?”“I've sent a few people to the scene. They're going to sneak in and try not to tamper with any of the evidence and then, they're going to see if Armani hid anything that can be helpful to us.” Jaxon said.“We can only hope that the Franz hitman didn't take any of whatever it was that Armani might have found out,” Cassian added.I nodded. Thankfully, they'd already made a decision. This was going to be less of an issue for me. I just had to exist and not break

Mia's POV:“Evidence gotten from illegal means is usually rejected by the court,” Cassian explained. “Unless we can prove otherwise…” he shrugged.“Chloe,” I let out. “What if Chloe submits it as evidence?”“Yes. That would work. She is directly connected to Armani so if she claims to have found everything at his hotel room when she was clearing his things, it would be accepted.” Cassian replied.“The question now is, how do we get the grieving girl to do that? We're asking her to show that the deceased boyfriend was at fault. I don't think it's fair.” Genevieve spoke up.I nodded. “She’ll do the right thing. No matter how hard it is.”“How are you so sure? She framed you, remember?” Jackson said.“I don't know. I have a hunch.” I said confidently. “I'm going to meet her.”***Chloe walked into the cafe.It was a private one not too far from the apartment buildings but far enough that she wouldn't be bothered or seen by the people there. When she walked in, the bell above the door din

Mia's POV:I felt very bad for her. She was just eighteen and now she was going to be a single mother raising a kid. Things were going to get bad for her.I decided that I was going to have to talk to her parents. They had to take her back once the time was right. For now, they needed to fix the current issue on the ground which was proving both my and Armani's innocence. The next day, Cassian came to inform us that Chloe had indeed submitted the evidence and retracted her evidence. She told the truth this time, talking about how Armani had tampered with the crime scene.Thankfully, he hadn't let her join in. Her and his best friend — Hermes— had done it. Hermes was called in to testify. He testified that Armani had indeed been working for an anonymous person but he'd been outside the apartment when the real killer had left. He knew what he looked like.Hermes was taken into witness protection after I emphasized the need. I had been attacked once in my office by F and Armani had been

Mia's POV:He shook his head and smirked. “No. It's because I like you and your little motley crew. It makes me a little jealous you have people like that. Keep them. You'll need them.”And then he was gone.Strangely, I felt his absence. He carried with him some kind of aura. Maybe it was because he was undead and also immortal. Still, I wondered how old he was and knew for sure that it would get lonely. But, Cassian would never admit it.***Finally, the trial for the murder of Pedro Infante and Armani was done. The murder had been done by the same person. He was a man with peculiar features. It had been easier to identify him after Hermes’ description. The killer's prints had been found around Armani's ankle. That was the only place that it had been found. The killer wore gloves to avoid his fingerprint from getting everywhere. It was like he was a professional at killing.Anyway, at Armani's trial, I had driven Chloe and his mother to court. Yes, driven. The trial had taken so lon

Mia's POV:I drove Armani's mom back to her apartment to get her bags. She was going to grab a bus to a couple of towns over and then another bus before her sister would pick her up and drive her off to where she lived. We gave Chloe and her family the space they needed. Her bags had been packed in my trunk so, I had just dropped them over.“Thank you so much for everything, Mia,” she said as we stood by the ticketing booth.“You're welcome.” I smiled back. She looked back at the booth and then gave me a small smile. As she turned to leave, I stopped her. “Here. Use this to start something.”I placed the white envelope in her hand. It was fat, filled with dozens of 100-dollar bills. Her eyes widened and she shook her head. “No, I can't take this. I don't deserve it.”“Take it, Armani died for this money. But I donated it to the orphanage because I know that you won't want to spend that kind of money. This is from me to you.” I explained, letting go. “Take care of yourself.”She looked

Mia's POV:I never guessed that Genevieve didn't like Felicity. Or maybe it was just that Genevieve wasn't friends with her. They just needed to hang out more to get closer.I was sure that they would like each other.Although I was tired, I called Terry and told him that he should not bother picking Melanie up. I drove straight to the orphanage. Some of the kids saw me and hugged me, almost knocking me off my feet.I missed working here. With everything that had been happening with my mentees, I was barely at the orphanage.“Can you get me, Miss Melanie?” I asked one of the older kids. “Tell her I said it's time to go home.”A couple of moments later, Melanie walked over to me, her black bag in her hand. She smiled when she saw me. “You're showing off your new ride.” She said.I smiled, waiting for her to walk over to the other side to get in. I got in through the driver's seat, saying bye to the kids. Melanie tossed her back into the backseat.“I know how to drive now so of course I

Mia's POV:I stopped at the hardware store, letting Melanie off. I would pick her up on the drive back. I drove back to the grocery store and grabbed a small basket.I immediately headed for the milk, grabbing a large keg. After that, I got the gummy bears, a few more chocolates, and the chips. As I passed by the pickles, I realized that I hadn't gotten some. These were Melanie's favorites. But I didn't know what brand she liked. As I was checking the label on one, I took a picture and sent it to Melanie. “These right?”Melanie texted back: yes. my life is yours!I chuckled.“Mia?”When I turned to the voice that had called me, the smile wiped from my face. I dropped the jar of pickles to the ground, shattering it.The dead were back to life.“William?” I called back.It was impossible. William was dead. He had been dead for years. But, how was he here? In front of me, calling my name?He looked like William but he also didn't. He was broader, his muscles more defined. His eyes looked
