I hovered over Ned as he plugged the thumb drive into his array of computer systems. I’d like to say I was waiting patiently, but I’m sure Ned thought differently. I shifted my weight from one foot to the other. Arms crossed. Staring at a screen as things I could only pretend to understand scrolled across. My anxious energy managed to distract even Ned. Who, at one point, looked back at me with a questioning look before waving me back.“Space won’t make this take longer, Alpha,” he said. “It’s a lot of information to upload.”“You’re sure you got everything?” I asked.“No, I’m not,” he said. “I can’t know for sure until I get everything into my system. But I’m not seeing any signs of anything going wrong.”I replied with a grunt, moving back to begin pacing through the lab. Like Sutton, I had also been feeling like the quiet months we’d been enjoying were coming to an end. Like there was an unknown deadline hanging over our heads. Hearing about Raphe’s birthday celebration only had th

Sutton linked me as I was getting out of the shower that afternoon telling me we were having a last-minute get-together at our place tonight. If she had told me this morning, I would have done anything to get out of it. I would have had a hard enough time hiding my mood from Sutton, let alone a room full of our friends. However, my workout and talk with Max had helped more than I had expected. We still didn’t know what Anders’ end goal was, but we had a good idea of what he was currently working toward.I threw on some jeans and a t-shirt and towel dried my hair as headed toward my home office where Max was going through my files on Anders and the prince. He had made himself at home, snacking on a bag of chips and drinking a beer. I shook my head as I joined him.“See anything I missed?” I asked.“Not yet,” he said. “What are all these articles about missing humans?”“Wesley’s intel included a list of people Anders or Mason worked with out in the human territory,” I said. “But his evi

I was in the bathroom finishing my nightly routine when Lucas came up behind me. He buried his face in my neck as his hands wrapped around my waist, resting possessively on my belly. I covered them with one of mine as I leaned against him. Knowing where his thoughts were lingering.“One day,” I said gently.Nova came to the front of my consciousness, interested in where the conversation would go.“There’s no rush,” he replied genuinely. “But it’s still nice to think about.”“It is,” I told him. “And I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to start planning a little. It’s not like we’ve talked about it much. I mean, I don’t even know how many kids you want.”“Six,” Lucas blurted out decisively.“Six,” I exclaimed. Nova yipped in my mind, her tail shooting up in the air in surprise and intrigue.“Maybe seven,” he said. “If Jack decides to stay with his grandparents.”I twisted around to look at him in shock. “You want us to have six kids?”He chuckled. “I was an only child,” he explained. “So was Em

I finished my third cup of coffee as I sent my last email. I hadn’t been sleeping much the past few days. The plan to find the key had been more complicated than I had hoped and I was worried that Sera wouldn’t be able to get everything in place in time. After the first night of trying to sleep, I knew it would be no use just laying in bed tossing and turning. Even Sutton wouldn’t sleep through that for long. So, I went to my home office and started reading through Leanetta’s journals.I couldn’t tell if Sutton had realized I hadn’t been in the bed with her or not. Most of the time she seemed normal, happy. But there were moments when she felt distant, like she didn’t want to say what she was thinking. Rhonen felt those moments the worst. Only adding to my stress with his incessant prodding.“Dude, you need to sleep,” Max said as we sat in my office. “The party is tomorrow. You’re not going to make it through like this.”“Because I think it’s a good thing to live off of caffeine and t

I pushed my breakfast around my plate as I sat in the palace suite the next morning. Lucas never responded to my text the day before. And he didn’t answer when I tried to call him last night. Eventually, I gave up. Settling for leaving him a message that we had made it safely.I’d say I woke up a dozen times throughout the night, but that would imply that I actually slept. It wasn’t just because I hadn’t heard from Lucas. It was the first time since we’d met that I had gone to bed without him. I didn’t know how to fall asleep without him.“Okay, you’ve been moping all morning,” Helene commented. “What’s up?”I sat up straighter and forced a half-smile. “It’s just the first time Lucas and I have been apart,” I told her. “It’s harder than I thought it would be. I know that seems crazy but…”Helene grabbed my hand and squeezed. “Not at all,” she assured me. “The best way to deal with it is to stay busy, right? So, let’s get ready for our visit with Grandfather. Then we’ll go find Nomi. I
