BLOODBOUND: THE LAST MATE のすべてのチャプター: チャプター 71 - チャプター 80

"You don't belong here." Lady Seraphine's voice arrived before she did — smooth, deliberate, shaped by centuries into a weapon that required no volume to wound. She descended the upper corridor staircase in silver, her gown trailing behind her like winter itself had followed her indoors, her pale eyes fixed on Lena with a contempt too settled to perform.Lena did not stop walking. She slowed, measured, the way Mira had taught her — never halt for someone who wishes you to run. She turned when the distance between them was still her choice and not Seraphine's."Lady Seraphine." The title was its own precision instrument. Mira had explained the gradations: my lady was warmth, Lady Seraphine was correct, Seraphine alone was war. Lena chose correct. She always chose correct.Seraphine descended the last three steps with the unhurried grace of something that had learned patience the hard way. "They've dressed you beautifully," she said, her gaze traveling over Lena's deep blue gown with th

"Hold your wrist like this," Rafael said, turning his own arm so that the inside of his wrist faced upward. "Not palm open — that's submission. The inside of the wrist is acknowledgment. It says: I know what you are, and I am not afraid of it. It says: I am also something worth knowing."They were in the east study, a room Lena had come to think of as the only genuinely comfortable space in the Citadel — not because it was warm, but because it was honest. The walls were books and maps and a fireplace that Rafael actually used, which put him in a minority among the vampires she'd met, most of whom seemed to view fire as an aesthetic inconvenience rather than a comfort. The light here was amber and steady, and it softened the edges of things. It softened the edges of him."The salutation of blood," she repeated, holding out her wrist. "You present the inside of your wrist to someone of equal standing. You present the back of your hand to someone below you. You present nothing to someone

"They've seated you below the salt," Mira said under her breath, so quietly that Lena felt it more than heard it. The steward had materialized at her elbow as she was moving toward the long dining table, her face as composed as ever but her eyes doing something complicated. "It wasn't an accident."Lena looked at the table. She had learned the Citadel's seating geography over the past weeks: the Lord Consort's mate should be placed at Rafael's immediate right. The seat at his right was occupied by Lord Aldric. The seat that bore her name card — she could see it from here, her name written in the gold script that was used for guests of the court — was three places below the ceremonial salt cellar, which in the old vampire tradition marked the division between those of standing and those who were merely tolerated. It was, she recognized, a perfectly executed insult. Deniable — a mix-up, a clerical error, so easy to apologize for afterward with a gracious smile. Devastating in the moment

"Again," Captain Vann said, which was the only word he seemed to know.He had been saying it for the better part of an hour. Lena picked herself up from the training yard's stone floor, brushed grit from her palms, and settled back into the guard stance Vann had drilled into her over the past two weeks. The captain of Rafael's personal guard was a vampire of indeterminate age who moved like poured water and sparred like he was genuinely trying to correct a philosophical error in her existence. She had not landed a single blow on him in their first four sessions. She had landed three in today's session, which Vann registered by not commenting on."Your footwork is improving," he said, which from Vann was approximately equivalent to anyone else weeping with pride."High praise," she said."It's an observation." He circled her. "You anticipate movement differently than any wolf I've trained. Normally a shifted wolf telegraphs with the shoulders. You telegraph with the eyes. Which is actu

"I move formally," Lord Dorian said, "that the council address the matter of the wolf's fitness for any eventual queenly title. This is not a personal position. This is a matter of constitutional precedent." He was younger than most of the council — young in vampire terms, meaning he had existed for perhaps a century and a half — with the precise, clipped diction of a man who had studied power without yet having fully acquired it, which made him, in Lena's assessment, more dangerous than the older lords whose ambitions had long since settled into something predictable. "No wolf lineage has ever held the high seat. The covenant between our kinds exists as alliance, not equivalence. Elevating a wolf to queenly standing would constitute a unilateral revision of that covenant without the consent of either the full vampire council or the wolf pack assemblies.""I second the motion," Lady Seraphine said. She was sitting very straight today, restored to her committee seat by some calculation
