From up here the sanctuary looked small, fragile, stone houses tucked into the hillside, lanterns flickering like dying stars.I killed the engine first and got out of the car. The others followed without a word. We moved down the slope on foot, boots silent on pine needles, weapons loose but ready. We didn’t have any banners, or war cries, just a quiet purpose.I could already feel her, not her scent—though that was there too, faint lavender and lightning—but something deeper.
