MABEL Bella went to get her laptop, leaving me alone in the living room. I walked over to the half-open bedroom door and peered inside. Two twin beds occupied most of the small space. One was empty, neatly made with a faded purple comforter. The other held a sleeping girl. Lily. She was smaller than I expected for twelve years old, her face pale against the pillow.
