LADY BAEVERAAunt Kiskera had always been far too skeptical for her own good, and now, even as we had drank the calming brew she had prepared, she was still watching me with suspicion in regards to the well-thought out lies I told her.“So let me get this straight,” she said, refilling my cup with steaming moonleaf. “While waiting for your bloodmaster at the Union Tree, you were attacked and kidnapped. But you managed to escape in the middle of the night a few days later. You did not come home because you feared they would be searching for you there, so instead, you have been circling the city while waiting on the arms you hired to eliminate them. Now the job is done and here you are.”I gave her a sheepish smile. “Forgive me, Great Aunt, I would have come back sooner. I saw the posters and the news pamphlets, but I did not want to put anyone in danger. These people were serious. I did not want them bringing their problems to our doorstep.”She sighed heavily, eyes tired. “Since when

LADY BAEVERA.I entered the grand Sunspring Manor, walking through the long, familiar hallway that led to the master’s wing.As expected, Bone and Mitvian were at their posts. When they saw me, their eyes went comically wide as they straightened into full sentinel posture.“My lady!” Bone exclaimed.“You are back!” Mitvian echoed.“Well, hello to you too, boys.” I smiled at them warmly. “I hope your master is inside?”“Oh yes, my lady. He is in his chambers but,” Bone said, though his tone turned uneasy. A familiar kind of uneasy. “He is rather… occupied.”Huh. A tightness formed in my chest. One I tried to dismiss.“I am sure he will still want to receive me. I will go ahead.” I continued walking. When I heard hesitant footsteps behind me, I called over my shoulder, “There is no need to follow. Return to your duty posts.”“My lady?” Mitvian asked gently.I turned to him.“He was incredibly worried about you. We all were.” The face of the hardened killer softened, stretching into the

LADY BAEVERAWhen I arrived back at Naked Den, the rain greeted me.Dusk had settled over the city, and the drizzle painted the estate in familiar, glimmering hues. Despite the moisture beading against my skin, I was not worried. Thankfully, the snake tattoo on my face had already dried. Before my break, I had the ink commissioned into a temporary paper-wrap sticker I could peel on and off when needed. I had reapplied it the night before, and now it was secure. Small mercies. As I stepped into the building, I felt the weight of eyes on me. Female gazes followed my every move, some glaring, others muttering beneath their breath.“Vera! You are back!”I turned to see a familiar face running toward me—ah, the one I had helped get rid of her friend’s abusive ex. What was her name again?“Hello…” I trailed off.“Winter,” she supplied eagerly. “My name is Winter. How was your break? I hope you had fun?”“I did.” I continued walking, and she fell into step beside me. “How is your friend?”“M

LORD REVANDRELCENTURIES AGO“S-U-N” Mama traced the letters across the scroll with her feather pen. “Sun. A sun.”“A sun.” I repeated, seated beside her and watching the words.“Oh yes,” Mama smiled warmly. “A little golden thing that climbs the sky every morning to chase the cold away.”A thunderclap sounded outside, making me flinch.I turned to the window, staring at the heavy rain as it streaked down the glass, blurring the night beyond.Mama followed my gaze. Her smile widened, and she reached out, patting my hair. “The sun hides at night,” she whispered, “but it always comes back in the morning—”“Where is that bitch!? Where is she?!” Lord Magnus’s voice crashed through the house, loud and furious. The smile disappeared from Mama’s face in an instant, replaced with sheer terror.“Come, quickly,” she rose to her feet, pulling me along with her.I stumbled after her, just as afraid. He hated when I was in her room, and he sounded drunk.Nothing good ever came when he was drunk.M

My breath caught as he crowded me. For a split second, I thought he was back to himself, that he recognized me, and for ready to beat the hell out of me. But his eyes were still distant and glassy.“Your blood s-smells… amazing,” he growled, leaning in. Sniff, sniff. “I almost want to t-take a d-d-deep breath and fi-fill my lungs with it.”My stomach flipped. “Why do you not?”“Cannot. H-he will hear it.”My throat went dry. “Who?” I already knew.“M-Magnus. Hurts my m-mama.”I closed my eyes. “I am sorry.”“Nobody c-cares.”“I am really sorry, Revandrel.”“Why? It is not y-your fault. You are not B-Baevera Eldareth.” He licked the skin of my neck. “She never ca-cared about the s-screams.”Tears prickled at the corners of my eyes. “I am so sorry.”“S-she is evil i-incarnate.”“She is.” A movement at the corner made my eyes open. The duke was folding his arms, still leaning against the door. He watched us with a peculiar mix of curiosity and wariness.“She is devil per-personified,”
