Chapter 1

I stumbled back to the hospital room, my body still trembling. The nurse rushed over and pressed a painkiller into my hand. Just as I swallowed it, the door swung open.Jeremy Sterling walked in with Carolina Jenson at his side. She was radiant in a red dress, her smile as bright as a summer day."Regina, how are you feeling? Any better?" Carolina asked, her voice all warmth, even as her fingers gave the baby in her arms a deliberate little pinch.I stared at the baby's peaceful, sleeping face, and Jeremy's earlier words echoed in my mind. It felt like a hand was squeezing my heart.Jeremy didn't so much as glance my way. He leaned forward slightly, his entire focus on the baby."Regina, you've just gone through a difficult labor. You still need some time to recover," Jeremy said. "I'm taking Carl back to the Sterling villa. The nannies will take care of him."I had known this was coming, but hearing those words from his mouth was like having a bucket of ice water dumped over my

Chapter 2

Carolina's voice, sweet and lilting, drifted from the second floor. "Regina, you're here."I looked up to see her holding Carl, standing outside the master bedroom Jeremy and I once shared."I'm so sorry, Regina. Carl's been so fussy, and I was worried he'd disturb your rest, so I took the liberty of moving your things over there."My gaze followed her pointing finger to the maid's quarters, tucked beside the kitchen on the ground floor.Just then, Jeremy stepped out of the kitchen, swirling a baby bottle in his hand.He shot me a cool glance. "The doctor said you're still coughing. Stay in your room unless it's absolutely necessary. We don't want to risk Carl catching anything."I shook my head instinctively. "It's not contagious. You can ask the doctor yourself.""Even if the cough isn't contagious, you've been popping pills for years. How can you be sure you don't have anything else that's contagious?"I stood frozen, forced to watch as he and Carolina fed Carl together, his

"Of course not! I lost the baby after kneeling for two days straight," I shot back. "Jeremy, you'd rather believe Carolina than me?"The words had barely left my mouth when another coughing fit seized me, so violent that my chest convulsed wildly.Jeremy, however, just stood there, watching with cold indifference until the fit subsided. When I was red-faced and gasping, he said flatly, "There was a time when I believed you."His phone rang. Without another glance at me, he answered it and walked to the other side of the room.I leaned against the wall, my legs giving out as I slid to the floor. Snippets of the conversation reached me, and I heard my name mentioned on the other end.He shot me a cold glare. "It's just her usual issues. She'll be fine with some rest. There's no need for surgery."A humorless laugh escaped him. "If she could kneel in the snow for two days, a little pain is nothing she can't handle."He hung up and told the maid to take me back to the maid's quarter

Jeremy's words cut like twin daggers, each one plunging deep into my chest. My ravaged body could no longer hold itself up, and I crumpled backward.Just as my consciousness wavered, one of the nannies, Marilyn Turner, rushed down from the second floor, shouting, "Mr. Sterling! Mrs. Sterling! Carl's burning up!"Through my hazy vision, I saw Carl cradled in her arms, his face flushed crimson, his eyes tightly shut, and his lips murmuring faintly.Panic seized Jeremy. He pressed a hand to Carl's forehead, and his expression darkened. "Get Carl to the hospital now!"Carolina flew into hysterics, charging at me with a vicious shove. "This is your fault! I told you you'd get Carl sick. Why didn't you listen? Why did you beg me to let you out?"She kept blaming me. "Carl's barely a month old, and now you've infected him. Are you happy now?"She shoved me with all her strength. The back of my head slammed into the wall, a hot trickle of blood sliding down my neck.Still, I clung to co

By the time Carolina rushed over, it was 2:00 am. Jeremy was in his study, making call after call."Get every man on it. I don't care if you have to turn this city upside down. Find them!""What else could it be? It's always about money with her. Regina's lost her damn mind. Deceiving me wasn't enough. Now, she's using her own son to squeeze more money out of me!"He ended the call. As he was about to hurl his phone in rage, Carolina darted forward and snatched it from his hand.Though she had gotten the gist before arriving, she couldn't help asking, clinging to a shred of hope. "Jeremy, what is going on? We have six maids, two nannies, and three guards on the grounds. No matter how capable Regina is, she can't just vanish into thin air with Carl."Jeremy's jaw clenched, and he slammed his fist on the desk. "I have no idea where she got the money, but she bribed every nanny and guard. Now not one of them will pick up their phones or respond to messages. They've all gone dark."C

Dad brushed his hand across my cheek, his sighs heavy with heartache."You stayed away all these years because of that bastard Jeremy. When I got your message, I didn't believe it was you. I thought it was some scammer pretending to be you."Thank goodness I trusted my gut and sent someone to check on you. That's when I learned he had nearly gotten you killed."He softened his voice. "Don't be afraid, Gina. From now on, I'll keep you safe."I cradled Carl tightly, tears welling in my eyes as I nodded.By the time the plane touched down in the foreign land of Arvenia, dawn had already broken. After Jeremy and Carolina got their marriage license, they spread the news far and wide."Search every corner of the earth. I want my son back!" Jeremy barked. His assistant, Kenneth, hesitated. "What about Regina?""I don't care about her. I just want my son."After searching high and low for three days, Jeremy still couldn't find me. Every man he sent out returned with the same report—t

Chapter 7

The phone screen glared with a medical report."Carolina!" Jeremy snarled. "You told me the baby was stillborn before Regina knelt in the snow. Then what the hell is this medical report? It clearly shows the baby still had a heartbeat when she was sent to the hospital."Carolina glanced at his phone, panic flashing across her face before she broke into sobbing pleas. "Jeremy, what are you talking about? I don't understand. The doctor told me himself that Regina's baby was gone long before. How could I lie to you?"Jeremy's gaze turned feral as his grip tightened around her throat. "Then tell me the doctor's name. I'll verify it myself.""I… I don't… I don't remember! It was five years ago…"Carolina choked, her face flushed deeper and deeper. Just as she was about to lose her breath, the lounge door was kicked open, and Theodore rushed in."Jeremy, let go of my daughter!"A swarm of bodyguards yanked Jeremy back, but in the next breath, the Sterling family's security also floode

Chapter 8

In Arvenia, Dad assembled the best medical team for me.Given my years of chronic health issues and the millions Jeremy had spent on my treatment, the team quickly assessed my full medical history and tailored the best possible recovery plan. Two months later, I finally got the chance to join a dance troupe, stumbling through my first routine.Dad asked if I had any regrets. I just held my son, smiled, and shook my head.I was alive, with my son in my arms and my dad by my side. There was nothing left to regret.Still, sometimes, Jeremy crept into my thoughts. Two months ago, Dad had compiled all the evidence and sent it anonymously to Jeremy's company.Later, he showed me the surveillance footage from the lounge, revealing how the man I once loved reacted when he finally learned the truth.I watched him completely unravel, roaring as he clamped his hand around Carolina's throat and confronted Theodore. Then, the two families exploded into a full-on brawl, especially Jeremy, wh

Chapter 9

After winning custody of Ryan, Jeremy sought out Dad, saying he wanted to return Ryan to me.As he looked at the photo of Ryan, his eyes brimmed with such deep longing that he couldn't look away. After a long silence, he nodded. "He was always your child. If I hadn't been so blind, the three of us would still be together.""Regina, I know I messed up from start to finish. I understand if you can't forgive me. But…" he hesitated. "Can I stay here? I just want to be close to you and our son, even if I can only watch from afar."I put my phone away and answered, calm but cold. "No. Seeing you only brings back those painful days. I fought too hard to escape that nightmare. I'm not going back."Jeremy, go home and don't come back. It's the best choice for Ryan's upbringing and future."I threw his own words back at him. His face turned pale, cold sweat trickling from his forehead down to his neck.Dad had told me that Theodore took revenge last month, locking Jeremy in a dark room and
