*****The Conclave’s chamber was cold, cavernous, lit by torches that made the shadows dance across the high stone walls. Teinerey leaned forward, long fingers steepled, eyes narrowing as he scanned the room. Rune stood off to the side, his usual composure fraying at the edges, his jaw tight, hands clenched into fists. Every word spoken in the chamber carried weight, every pause a threat.“We can’t risk failure,” Teinerey said finally, voice like ice over steel. “If she won’t tell us, if she cannot lead us… what then?”Rune shifted, his eyes flicking toward the closed doors behind which Susan was locked, pacing the room like a caged animal. “I thought… I thought I got through to her,” he admitted, voice low, almost grudging. “I thought she’d understand the stakes, that she’d cooperate. But no… she went around. She came back, right under my noses. "She's too distrusting for her own good."A murmur rippled through the chamber. Other members exchanged looks of concern and anger.
