Sneaking and Suspicions

ARYA’S POVI woke up the next morning with swollen eyes and a hollow feeling in my chest that no amount of sleep could fix. The pillow was still damp from last night's tears, and my throat felt raw from crying.I managed to push myself to the bathroom, washing my hair and cleaning my makeup. I wore a comfortable knit sweater, black leggings, and styled my hair into a simple low pony.In the mirror, I could see the bags underneath my eyes and how much color I had lost. The phone Marco had slipped me yesterday during our gelato outing felt like heavy in my pocket as I made my way downstairs. He texted me last night asking for us to meet today and sent the address already.I didn’t know if it was the rage or the pain, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to spend the day cooped up in the house. Matteo was already waiting by the car, and looking at him now, I couldn't tell if he'd known what Giovanni was planning last night or if he has just been following orders like always."I need to make a

Ambush

GIOVANNI’S POVI stood in my office, my hands braced against the desk, trying very hard not to put my fist through the antique wood."You let her leave," I said slowly. "After everything I told you about keeping her under constant supervision, you let her walk out to go shopping."Matteo stood at attention in front of my desk, and I could see the tension in his shoulders. "She said she needed feminine products, sir. It seemed-""I don't care what she said!" I slammed my palm against the desk, making him flinch. "Your job is to watch her and to make sure she doesn't do anything stupid like meet with her family behind my back. And what did you do?""I thought…" Matteo's voice was strained. "After last night, I thought perhaps giving her some space, might-""Might what? Make her feel better?" I laughed, but there was no humor in it. "Since when do you make decisions about what my wife needs?"The word tasted bitter on my tongue. Wife. As if that was what she was. "You're fired," I said

WORRIED ABOUT HIM

ARYA’S POVThe moment I stepped through the villa's entrance, I knew something was terribly wrong.About three guards rushed past me without acknowledgment, their faces tense. The sharp metallic scent of blood hung in the air, mixing with antiseptic and my heart jumped into my throat.I followed the commotion toward the living room, my feet moving before my brain had fully processed what was happening. The scene that greeted me made me freeze in the doorway.Giovanni was sprawled on the leather couch, his white shirt soaked through with blood on the left side. A man I didn't recognize was bent over him, working frantically at his shoulder while Giovanni lay unconscious.Around them, some guards were barking orders into phones, others checking weapons, and one pressing gauze to what looked like a bullet wound.A bullet wound!? Did that mean that Giovanni was shot?Part of me wanted to go upstairs, close my door, and let him deal with the consequences of whatever violence he had involve

Truth and Lies

ARYA’S POVThe sound of birds chirping pulled me from sleep and it was an annoyingly cheerful sound that made me want to bury my head under a pillow and ignore the world for another few hours.I groaned, stretching my arms above my head and yawning so wide my jaw cracked. My neck was stiff, my back ached, and when I finally opened my eyes, filtered sunlight was streaming through unfamiliar windows.Where was I?The memories crashed back all at once and I realized I had fallen asleep in the chair next to his bed.But when I sat up quickly, I realized two things: First, someone had covered me with a soft blanket at some point during the night. Second, the bed beside me was empty."Giovanni?" I called out, my voice hoarse from sleep. There was no answer.I jumped to my feet, the blanket falling to the floor, and rushed toward the door. My bare feet padded against the cold floor, I had apparently kicked off my shoes at some point but I was too alarmed to care about slippers. The hallway w

CAUGHT

GIOVANNI'S POV"You have a sharp mouth, Arya Vitale," I said, watching the fire flash in her eyes. "It's one of the things I find most... intriguing about you.""Don't," she warned, but I could see her resolve wavering."Don't what? Acknowledge that you're possibly the only person brave enough to talk back to me?" I allowed myself a small smile, even though the pain in my shoulder was making spots dance in my vision. "Most people cower. You snarl and it’s refreshing."She scoffed and rolled her eyes. “I'm glad my suffering entertains you.""Your fire entertains me," I corrected. "Your suffering…" I paused, something uncomfortable twisting in my chest. "Your suffering serves a purpose. Whether you believe that or not."Before she could respond or I could say something else I'd regret, I turned and walked out of the study. My shoulder screamed in protest with each step, fresh blood seeping through the bandage, but I would be damned if I showed weakness now."Cazzo," I muttered under my

Becoming A Monster

GIOVANNI'S POVArya was sitting on her bed, her back to me, and a phone pressed to her ear. She was so absorbed in her conversation that she didn't hear me enter."And last night he literally threatened to kill all of you right in front of me. Like you're all just chess pieces he can…”I crossed the room in three strides and yanked the phone from her hand."What is this?" I demanded.Arya whirled around, her eyes going wide with shock then fear."Give that back," she said, reaching for the phone.I held it out of reach, bringing it to my ear. A second passed then I heard a rustling sound followed by a familiar gruff voice. “Arya? Are you there? My lips curled into a snarl. “Marco. How thoughtful of you to check in on my wife.""Giovanni?” He paused for a moment then cleared his throat. "We were just talking but it's nothing and-”"Nothing?" I looked at Arya, whose face had gone pale. "It sounded like quite a lot of something from what I heard. I'm going to assume you gave this devic

Goodbyes and Poisons

ARYA’S POVI stayed in my room long after Giovanni left, staring at the door he had walked through like it might offer some explanation for what had just happened. He had taken the phone already and I wasn't comfortable with it. What would he do about Marco? The anxiety built in my chest, making it hard to breathe. I forced myself to move and do something normal.I had just finished brushing my damp hair when Matteo knocked on my door."Mrs. De Santis? May I come in?""Yes," I said, setting down the brush. He entered with his usual stoic expression, but something in his eyes looked almost... apologetic?"Your family is departing today," he said. "In approximately two hours. Mr. De Santis has arranged for transportation to take you to the hotel to say goodbye."It felt like the ground had been taken from underneath me and I gasped. "What?" I stood up, my legs suddenly unsteady. "They're leaving already? But they've only been here a few days. They were supposed to stay-”"Plans have ch

The Weight of Choices

ARYA'S POVThe mansion was eerily quiet when I returned.Even the guards stationed at the usual corner were nowhere to be found, leaving behind a silence so complete it felt like the house itself was holding its breath.I stood in the foyer, my bag still clutched in one hand, Marco's words playing on repeat in my mind."Kill him, Arya. It's the only way you'll ever be free."The small vial of poison he had pressed into my palm felt like it weighed a thousand pounds. I had tucked it into my jacket pocket on the drive back, and now it burned against my side like a brand.Kill Giovanni De Santis. There were simple words and a simple solution.Except nothing about this was simple.I moved through the hallway, my footsteps the only sound in the quiet. Where was everyone? "Hello?" I called out, my voice swallowed by the emptiness. "Anyone home, or did everyone finally get smart and evacuate?"A chill ran down my spine because I knew that this place was never empty. Unless something had ha

Morning After

GIOVANNI'S POVThe first thing I registered when consciousness dragged me back from the void was a splitting, vicious headache that felt like someone had taken a sledgehammer to my skull and then, for good measure, set the pieces on fire.I groaned, pressing the heels of my palms against my eyes, trying to block out the light that seemed determined to pierce directly through my brain. That thought cut through the fog of misery. Why was there so much light?I never left the curtains open. The darkness helped me think, so why…I forced my eyes open, squinting against the assault of morning sunlight streaming through wide-open curtains, and froze.Arya sat in the armchair by the window. She was not hovering or fidgeting. But she was sitting there with her legs tucked under her, a book in her lap, bathed in golden morning light like some sort of Renaissance painting. She looked up when I moved, and our eyes met across the room. For a long moment, neither of us spoke. My mind raced, tryin

Olive Branch

GIOVANNI'S POVNo matter how hard I tried to focus on the documents in front of me, Enzo's words kept echoing through my head."You're turning into someone I don't recognize. Someone your father would be ashamed of."The guilt sat in my chest, although I had been pushing it down since last night, it wouldn't stay buried. And now, sitting across from her at breakfast and watching her push food around her plate without eating, her eyes fixed somewhere past my shoulder, and now the guilt was crushing me.She looked defeated, like something vital had been extinguished behind those eyes that usually sparked with fire.I had done that to her.I opened my mouth to say something but the words stuck in my throat. What could I say? Sorry? That would be a lie, because I would do it again if it meant maintaining control. Or maybe I could tell that I cared? Also a lie, because caring complicated everything.Except it wasn't entirely a lie anymore, was it?"Is there..." I started, then stopped.A
