Mirelle’s POV “Be careful, sweetheart. You will hurt yourself,” I called after my son, worry threading through my voice as I hurried behind him. Callan ran ahead as though the forest itself posed no threat, his laughter light, his small feet nimble against the uneven ground. “A bunny, Mama. A bunny,” he shouted. He stopped suddenly, pointing excitedly. “Wow. I have never seen a tree this big. Come see.” Moments later, another cry followed. “A deer, Mama. Do you want me to hunt one down?” My chest tightened with every shout, every careless step forward. Like Dominic had warned, we should not be out here. We should have stayed inside the cabin where it was safer. But Callan had inherited his father’s stubborn streak, and once his mind was set on something, there was no reasoning with him.
