Chapter 1

When I woke up again, I realized that I was in a hospital bed.My abdomen was still in great pain, the agony crashing onto me like a tidal wave, telling me that my baby was no longer alive. My husband, Nicholas Leyton, leaned against the chair while tapping his leather shoes against the floor every once in a while."You're such a bitch, Victoria Rosewood! How dare you bring back some random bastard's baby after your three months of 'intensive courses' overseas?"I gripped my sheets tightly until my knuckles turned white."This was our child! You knew that I went to Germasia for an intensive course on the latest cardiac surgery technique—""Intensive course?"Nicholas suddenly yanked my hair and flung his phone in my face. The screen displayed a photo of me and my medical assistant, Dean Houston. The photo had been taken from the back, so only our backs were visible."You lived with him for three months! Did you think I was blind?"Evelyn Richardson, who was standing by the wi

Oswald hollered, "Victoria Rosewood! How dare you sleep with another man behind my son's back?"Then, he picked up the coffee mug on the table and hurled it in my face. I couldn't manage to duck in time, and the mug hit me squarely on the shoulder."Oswald, you shouldn't get too agitated since you have a heart condition. It's bad for your health," I said.Oswald just got even angrier at that."Who did you just say had a heart condition? Nick already explained that the hospital made a mistake with the diagnosis! What, you think that you can curse me to die of a heart attack just because your own father died of that?"I felt a pang of pain in my chest when he brought up my dad, Alfred Rosewood.Dad had suddenly passed away due to a heart attack, and back then, the medicines and technology had still been quite limited. This was also the main reason why I had wanted to be a heart surgeon since then."I didn't mean it that way, Oswald," I said.Evelyn just kept fanning the fire to p

Back then, Nicholas would have changed his view of me. He didn't break up with me, and he even got himself busy on my behalf, helping me with everything.I had felt secretly delighted when he'd helped me during that period. However, at some point, everything suddenly changed. Nicholas began speaking very coldly and sarcastically to me, and everything he said felt like a knife slicing my heart into pieces."You're only dating me because you want me to pay for all your dad's medical expenses. What else would you do for money, Victoria Rosewood?"I shut my eyes in helplessness.I should have woken up sooner. Nicholas was no longer the same person who still treated me like I was his world ten years ago.I felt my heart turning cold with despair. Soon, I made a decision. Once I had performed the surgery for Oswald as payment for what I owed him for saving my dad, I would end things with him.The hospital called me again and told me that Oswald wasn't doing well and that he had to und

Suddenly, the entire ward descended into an uncomfortable silence.Jacob didn't realize it and still continued talking about me."You're such a fortunate person, Mr. Leyton Senior! Did you know that Dr. Rosewood deliberately gave up on a promotion and applied to go for intensive training overseas by herself after learning that you had a very complicated kind of heart condition?"She did all of that just so she could perform this bypass surgery on you!"I let out a bitter laugh while still standing behind the nurse."Sorry, Dr. Einstein. I can't perform the surgery anymore."I then raised my broken right hand and let it dangle in the air, letting out gasps of agony. "I can never hold a scalpel or perform any surgeries again!"I began to sob. The ward was soon filled with my cries. Meanwhile, Oswald went berserk and began verbally attacking Jacob. "That's impossible! What do you mean that she's the only one who can perform this surgery? I refuse to believe it!"How dare you say

Pain shot through my abdomen again. My face instantly turned white.Nicholas just glared down at me and said, "Watch your tone when speaking to my dad. Dad is sick, and he needs a container for his meds. This box suited the occasion. Why would anyone care about the kind of dust it collected inside? It's all been poured down the toilet bowl."I rushed into the toilet like a madwoman.Bleed continued dripping down my thighs, all the way from the bedroom to the toilet, but I didn't even realize it.There were still some of Dad's ashes spilled on the basin that hadn't been flushed away. My eyes turned red as I carefully swept whatever remained of Dad's ashes into the palm of my hand, shaking my head fervently.I couldn't let Dad leave me! He couldn't! I didn't want him to leave!Nicholas just leaned against the door and cackled out loud."He's dead. What's the point of keeping him around? You should thank me for recycling the box in the first place."I held Dad's ashes in my hand a

A few days later, Nicholas came knocking on my door.He looked completely disheveled and no longer as spirited as before."Vicky, I misunderstood you in the past. Come home with me now, please?"I was stunned for a while when I heard the nickname he hadn't used in years. After all, we used to be very close and intimate with each other, but now, all of that was gone.I lifted my right hand and showed it to him. It was still wrapped up in gauze. Then, I smiled mockingly at him and said, "We're already divorced, Nicholas Leyton."Still, he wouldn't let up and just looked at me remorsefully."I'm sorry, Vicky. I didn't know. I thought that the baby… I didn't think that… I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Vicky. I misunderstood you."Come back to me. We can start all over. Dad's already seen the videos, and he knows about everything you've done for him. Let's forget the past and start again, shall we?"My eyes were teary as I stumbled backward."Our child is dead. You were the one who killed hi

"Don't forgive him, my child," Dad seemed to whisper in the wind.My voice was determined. "We are never, ever getting back together."…Evelyn quickly realized something was amiss when Nicholas kept disappearing and coming to find me every other day.Today, my doorbell rang again, and I thought that it was Nicholas once more. I thought that it was time I told him to stop bothering me and leave me alone. When I opened the door, however, a palm immediately swung toward my face.I managed to duck in time and quickly took a step back. Evelyn's hand missed. Her face was purple with anger, and her eyes were vile and resentful as she glared daggers at me."You shameless bitch! You're already divorced! Why are you still being so clingy with Nick?"We are about to get married soon! Don't you have manners? Why the hell are you trying to be the homewrecker who ruins our relationship!"I was so speechless when I saw how angry she was that I ended up laughing out loud."Do you even hear

Evelyn broke down and screamed in despair. "You can't do this to me, Nick! You love me! I'm the one you love the most!"Get your filthy hands away from me, you bastards! Get off me!"Nicholas only watched her with cold eyes and said, "I won't stop unless Vicky says that she forgives you. Otherwise, I'm going to make you suffer a hundred times more than whatever she went through!"I felt exhausted and disinterested as I watched the scene play out before me."That's enough, Nicholas," I said. "This is my house. You can settle whatever grudges you have with each other behind closed doors, back at your own house. Don't defile my house like this."I looked at Evelyn. She was now lying on the ground in a disheveled mess, her clothes mostly ripped in half, and with tears streaming down her face. She dragged herself toward me and hugged my leg, looking at me pleadingly and saying, "Victoria! Victoria, I'm sorry, I know now that I was wrong! You're a very forgiving person, so you'll forg
