PearlThe smell of smoke was still my hair even after we’d put fifty miles between us and the burning safe house. Every time I turned my head on the back of Zander’s bike, I caught another whiff of it, like it was telling me that nothing was safe anymore. Places weren't safe, people were not safe and plans were definitely not safe too.We avoided the main highways and stuck to back roads, the kind that went through dark forests and forgotten towns. Zander had switched our phones for burners at a rundown gas station somewhere past midnight. No GPS, no credit cards, just cash and the clothes on our backs.By the time we pulled into a shitty little motel somewhere nowhere, my thighs were numb.Zander killed the engine. The sudden silence felt louder than the road noise. “Two nights max,” he said. “Then we move again.”I nodded, wasn't in the mood to argue. My body was aching, but it was the kind of ache that came from more than just riding. Everything felt like a burden, the truth abou

PearlMorning sunlight escaped through the cheap curtains, diligently painting the room in some golden color. I was the first one up, still cuddled against Zander’s side with his arm across my waist. For a moment I just watched him sleep. He was relaxed, those hard lines on his face weren't that pronounced and his hair was messy too. He looked almost peaceful. Almost.I traced a finger down the scar on his ribs, and his eyes flew open.“Morning, stalker,” he said, his voice ladened with sleep.I smiled. “Can’t help it. You’re nicer to look at when you’re not barking orders at me.”He chuckled and rolled on top of me so that half if my body was under him. “I only bark when you’re being reckless. Which is most of the time.”“Reckless?” I cocked an eyebrow. “Says the man who burned down a safe house with half our shit inside.”“That was a well calculated risk.” He said, and kissed the side of my neck, slow and warm. “Unlike you wanting to run off alone to meet your traitor mother.”I pu

PearlThe closer we got to New York, the more the uneasiness in my stomach grew. We left the mountains behind and were cutting through Pennsylvania now, sticking only to secondary roads, and once we passed a truck, I'd glance over my shoulder. Zander felt it too. I could tell by the way his shoulders remained rigid under my hands and how he checked the mirrors more often. We stopped at a truck stop diner just before crossing into New York state. The smell of grease and coffee welcomed us ad we walked in. Zander chose a booth in the back, back to the wall, eyes watching everyone who came through the door.“You’ve barely said ten words since breakfast,” I said, shifting my coffee mug from my right palm to my left. “Talk to me.”He rubbed the back of his neck. “We’re meeting Brick and Ghost in two hours. Once we do this, there’s no more running. We’re putting targets on our backs for real.”I reached across the table and held his hand. “We’ve had targets on us since the safe house burne

PearlThe chapel was still abuzz with anger and disbelief even after they dragged Hawk out. Couldn't blame them though. Zander stood beside me, his hand resting on my lower back. I could feel the tension emanating off of him. One of the older members, Tank, finally spoke up. “What now? We got a rat in our house for over a year and you’re telling me we just sit on it?”“We don’t sit,” Zander said. “But we do this smart. Hawk’s not talking yet, but he will. Pearl wants him alive for now.”All eyes turned to me. “He’s going to help us finish what my father started. He knows names. He knows how deep the cartel connection goes. Dead men don’t talk.”They seemed to approve that. But others still looked uncomfortable about a woman calling shots in church, but nobody argued. Not after the evidence we’d dropped on the table.Brick clapped Zander on the shoulder. “We’ll keep him locked down tight. Ghost is already on watch.”As the meeting ended, Zander pulled me aside into the hallway. The lo

PearlThe night of the gala arrived faster than expected and still fast enough at the same damn time. I stood in front of the mirror in Zander’s apartment, using my palm to smoothen the deep emerald dress that hugged my curves and hid the wire perfectly between my breasts. My hands could not stop shaking.Zander came up behind me, already dressed in a black suit that made him look illegally good. He wrapped his arms around my waist and met my eyes in the reflection.“You look like sin,” he murmured, as he pressed a kiss to my bare shoulder. “And you’re shaking.”“I’m fine,” I lied.“Bullshit.” He turned me around to face him. “Talk to me, baby. We still have an hour before we have to leave.”I placed my forehead against his chest, breathing in his familiar scent. “What if I freeze up there? What if Chen doesn’t say anything incriminating? What if Snake sees me and everything goes to hell before we even get started?”Zander lifted my chin so I was looking up at him. “Then we improvise
