Chapter 1

The office television was broadcasting the story of Cedric Gardner's return. Tiffany Scorsese's eyes remained on the screen the entire time, even when she accepted the property transfer agreement from me and signed it without hesitation.Parnings Manor, located in the western suburbs, was one of the most sought-after properties in all of Cloudridge. It was nearly impossible to purchase even with money, yet it held no value in her eyes—just like I did. After the broadcast ended, Tiffany appeared to be in high spirits. She casually twirled the pen between her fingers after signing, then handed the property deed back to me. "I must have transferred over 60 properties to you by now? You're basically a little tycoon," she joked. The delight in her tone was undeniable, but it had nothing to do with me. It was all because her first love was coming home.I stood in front of her and simply nodded. "The mansion in the western suburbs has a view of the ocean. I really like it."Back when she

Chapter 2

There were 25 days left until our divorce was finalized. For the past five days, Tiffany's usually quiet social media had become unusually active.During the day, she and Cedric fed pigeons in the plaza. At night, they watched parade floats from the rooftop of a hotel beside the amusement park.I saw every step they took and every place they went together. As for the promise she made to me, I was sure she had already forgotten it.I got up and began packing. The floor was still a mess of scattered clothes and half-open luggage. That was when I received a call from her assistant, Jillian Ferguson."Mr. Marsden, don't forget the fireworks show at eight tonight, on Wilhelm Bridge. If anything goes wrong, Ms. Scorsese will absolutely kill me."In the five years I had been married to Tiffany, Jillian was the only person who knew the truth about our marriage. Not wanting to make things harder for her, I said I would go.But when I actually headed toward Wilhelm Bridge, I found myself

Chapter 3

This woman, whom I had called "Aunt Elena" for five years, was the perfect excuse, carefully prepared from the beginning. The fireworks show carried on. No one was paying attention to me anymore. Then the weather turned. Out of nowhere, rain came pouring down. Tiffany quickly pushed through the crowd. "Cedric's not well. He can't be in the rain. Please, make way."She carefully shielded him as she helped him into the car.And once again, I was left standing alone. The rain was ice cold, but I didn't feel a thing. Maybe five years of marriage had already numbed me.…I got home and took a hot shower. By the time I came out, Tiffany was in the living room. She hesitated, then actually thanked me. "Thank you for stepping in out there. I mean... we're still secretly married. If things had come out, it wouldn't have looked good for Cedric. One day, I'll find a way to make our relationship public."I didn't remind her that there would be no more chances to go public. This marriage

Chapter 4

"Don't you need to be with Cedric that day?" I asked.Tiffany's expression stiffened. "I've spent plenty of time with him. It's time I spent some time with you."Even as she said it, she seemed to realize how absurd it sounded. Her eyes dropped to the floor, but I didn't call her out on it. I simply played along with the lie. That day also happened to be the day our divorce would be finalized. It was fitting, in a way.…One day left until our divorce was finalized, and Tiffany hadn't shown up at all in the past two days. She had been busy with Cedric, probably trying to smooth things over.Still, she would send me trivial messages every night, celebrity gossip, photos of stray cats she saw on the street, and funny memes from social media. It was as if we were just a normal married couple living apart, chatting about nothing in particular. In five years of marriage, Tiffany and I had never shared that kind of daily banter. I didn't understand why she was suddenly doing it, and

Chapter 5

At first, I thought I was mistaken. But after blinking and looking again, I was sure of it. Tiffany had really stopped her car right there on the highway. She opened the door and stepped out, walking straight toward me. She knocked on the cab window, mouthing words I couldn't hear. The soundproofing was too good. The driver looked over, puzzled. "Hey, do you want me to roll the window down so you can talk to her? It's dangerous out here."I shook my head. "No. Just ignore her."Tiffany knocked harder, her hands pounding the window again and again, but I never once glanced her way.The commotion finally came to an end when a police officer led her away. Only then, with the surrounding cars blocking the view, did I finally turn and look. Her expression was crystal clear. So she could be anxious about me after all.But I'd already given her a chance. She was the one who gave it up.The traffic cleared up quickly, and before long, we reached the airport. I arrived on time. What I

Chapter 6

"You should go back to Cedric. He waited for you all these years. Now that you finally belong to him, you two should be happy," I said.Tiffany paused for a moment. She ignored the mention of Cedric entirely. She only looked at me, confused. "Divorced? What do you mean? When did we get divorced?"I handed her my copy of the divorce decree. "Yours is at the mansion in the western suburbs."She took the document with trembling hands and began to shake her head, unable to believe what she was seeing. "Divorced? That can't be true... I never said I wanted a divorce!"Without even meaning to, I started laughing. It wasn't forced, and it wasn't cold. It just came out because what she said was genuinely laughable."You didn't need to say it. You showed it in everything you did. With a marriage like this, what would be the point of staying together?"Still, Tiffany kept shaking her head. The powerful Tiffany Scorsese had become someone entirely different, like a child in denial. She gra

Chapter 7

Finally, as I scanned my boarding pass and stepped through the gate, Tiffany called out to me. "Matthew, is there really no chance for us anymore?"I didn't stop walking. That silence was the clearest answer I could give her.The flight from Cloudridge to Newford was just three hours.I had never been to Newford before. It was colder than I imagined.I arrived at the homestay I had booked weeks ago. It wasn't anything luxurious. I didn't want a five-star hotel. I just wanted something that felt alive.Newford didn't disappoint me. The woman who ran the place greeted me warmly at the door. "You're a lot later than expected. Did something happen?"I shook my head. "It's all taken care of now.""That's good. You're new around here. If anything goes wrong, just find me. I'll help you out."I nodded and thanked her for her kindness. She asked if I had eaten. Then she recommended a few restaurants nearby, saying the food was great.Originally, I had come to Newford to start over.

Chapter 8

"You're the one who said this place was too empty to keep open. I figured I might as well earn some side cash."The bartender shrugged, took away the glass of cocktail and replaced it with a tall glass of lemonade. The singer had just finished a song and started a foreign ballad I didn't recognize. The melody was gentle and calming. I listened quietly, letting it fill the silence. While I watched the singer on stage, the bartender, at some point, was quietly watching me.…The next morning, the bartender showed up right on time at my homestay. I asked how she even knew which place I was staying at. She just said, "People usually pick this place."The car she drove clearly wasn't a rental. It was hers.I paid her a generous fee and told her to take me around and make it worth my while. She said, "My name is Blake Thompson. Maybe we are friends now?""That sounds like a boy's name," I said without thinking. But the second it left my mouth, I realized it might've been a little

Chapter 9

"She told me we could see it too, but I know she did it for you. I didn't want to come. But then again... she only did all that because she knew you'd like it. So in the end, I brought you anyway."Blake kept talking.I knew she was doing all of it for me. Maybe it started with love at first sight, or maybe that short conversation from the other night left an impression on her.But seeing her so nervous, rambling at the end without daring to meet my eyes, I realized I couldn't blame her.She hadn't done anything wrong. She was just a little jealous.Blake clearly wrestled with herself before she finally looked up, eyes shimmering with tears. With a face like hers, even tears looked like poetry. Her eyes were practically made for holding emotion."That person in the rabbit costume was definitely her. If you leave now, you can still catch her," Blake said.I stared at her so long she started to tremble. Even as she told me to go to Tiffany, deep down, I knew she didn't mean it.S

Chapter 10

Tiffany said it so casually, like it didn't mean anything. But I knew Cedric's temper. He must've fought her over it. And after that, he probably left. That was when she probably came crawling back to me.I gave a quiet laugh. "So that's why you're here, Tiffany. Because he's not coming back?"Tiffany shook her head in panic. "That's not it. I'm here because I love you. I told him those things because I love you. I don't want to hurt you anymore. "Matthew, I love you. I'm in love with you..."Words of love always sounded beautiful. If this were before, I might have forgiven her again. But this was the 100th, and I had no forgiveness left.Even if she meant it, so what? I gave her a hundred chances."I don't want your love anymore, Tiffany. Just because you love me doesn't mean I owe you anything in return," I said.At that, Tiffany's tears finally fell. She gave me many firsts that day—her first time looking disheveled, her first time crying. But none of it moved me."Matthew.
