Chapter 1

Chapter 2

Betty’s POV Crystal glasses and golden chandeliers glistened throughout the ballroom. This was a place I had never been before. Everyone appeared to have stepped out of high-end magazines. I tried to breathe and tell myself that I was invited here, and that I belonged. However, on the inside, I felt like a shadow that nobody wanted to see. She approached me at that point. Vivienne. Her lips curled into a ruthless smile, and her robe was made of blood-red silk. She examined me from head to toe as though I were a discoloration on her shoes. "Well, well!" she said it loud enough for visitors in the vicinity to hear. The charity case, if it's not tiny Betty. Did you enter covertly from the rear entrance? Or were you mistaken for the help? My cheeks began to get hot. My glass shook in my trembling hands. I desired to merge with the floor. "I..I was invited." My voice cracked as I spoke. Vivienne gave a scathing laugh. "Invited? Who did it? Don't tell me that Larry gave you access

Betty’s POV That night, I am unable to sleep. Each time I closed my eyes, the two pink lines that changed my entire life flashed in front of me on the pregnancy test strips. I had to tell Larry, I knew. He was entitled to know. But my chest was weighted with worry. Would he believe me? Would he refer to me as a gold-digging, and not just a slut? I had to try at least. Picked up my phone and sat on the edge of my bed. "All right, Betty. Just call him, you can do this... nothing to be afraid of, he isn't such a monster...I guess.” I gave myself a pep talk before punching Larry's number with my shaky fingers. After the first ring, the call cut mid-way. "Hey?...Larry?” I said into the cold silence on the phone. However, the call was already over. I gave it another go, but this time it didn't ring. It immediately went to voicemail. It's Larry Ronan here. Make a note. His voice made my heart skip a beat. I talked quickly. "It's me, Betty, Larry. I must speak with you. It's crucial. Cal

Chapter 4

Betty’s POV I had wished that the past would remain hidden. I had hoped that hiding away in this small seaside village, changing my name, and getting out of the metropolis would keep me safe. However, I was mistaken. It all began when I first spotted Larry standing in the resort lobby, his towering body obstructing the sun, his keen eyes searching the area like a predator. My heart stopped beating. He located me. It got worse when he saw Liam. Although it wasn't the name he used to know me by, Larry's strong voice cried out, "Betty." Or ought I to say... Megan? " I went cold. I gripped Liam's little fingers with shaking hands. Innocently, he was playing with his toy car, not realizing the impending storm. I made an effort to speak steadily. "Larry, what do you want? Why are you here?” He clenched his jaw. He approached me till I could smell his cologne—the same one that used to make me shaky. All it did now was make me sick. Whose kid is he? With a knife-sharp voice, he d

Chapter 5

Betty’s POV My heart was racing as I stood at Larry's mansion's entrance. "Megan, you and Liam are moving in here," he added, his piercing eyes never leaving me Beginning today. My mouth quivered. "Listen, Larry, I can not; this life and this place are not mine. I don't fit in here.” His voice was firm but chilly. He folded his arms across his chest. “It has nothing to do with your desires. It has to do with safety. You and Liam will remain in my house. I will not expose my son to danger.” his words lacked emotion or any form of tenderness as he meant to. "Safety? Liam and I were doing just fine before you came along.? He clenched his jaw. "Don't deceive yourself. You are powerless to turn me away. He is my son. My blood. This is where he belongs.” His words were like chains pressing down on me. Unaware of the turmoil between us, Liam was playing with his toy car by my side when I turned to face him. My chest hurt. I suppressed my pride and refrained from screaming. "All right,"

Chapter 6

The first thing Megan noticed about Larry Trent’s mansion was how quiet it was. It wasn’t a relaxing silence; it felt heavy and uncomfortable. Even Liam felt it. He gripped her hand tighter as they walked inside, his shoes squeaking on the marble floor. “It’s okay,” she whispered, mostly trying to convince herself. The entrance hall was massive and sterile. Everything was so white and polished that it looked like a museum rather than a home. A massive chandelier hung overhead, and the sound of Larry closing the door behind them echoed through the space. “This way,” Larry said, walking ahead. He didn’t offer a welcome or ask if they were okay. He just gave directions. Megan followed, picking Liam up when he started to get restless. He was exhausted from the long, quiet drive. He’d spent the whole trip asking why they were going to such a big house and why Larry kept staring at him. Megan still didn’t have any good answers for him. As Larry led them through the wide hallways, h

Chapter 7

Megan's povThe room went dead silent.Megan felt like the air had been sucked out of her lungs. She had never used that word with Liam. She had always referred to Larry as "the man" or "Larry." But the children were observant. Liam had seen the photos she’d tucked away; he’d heard the way the maid spoke.Larry froze. The calculated, boardroom-ready mask he wore didn't just crack, it shattered. He stared at the boy, his mouth slightly open. For the first time since Megan had arrived, he looked human. Vulnerable, even."I..." Larry cleared his throat, his voice sounding uncharacteristically rough. "If your mother agrees, yes. We can go to the park."Liam beamed, his face sticky with syrup. "Yay! Park!"Larry looked at Megan. The power dynamic hadn't shifted entirely, but the atmosphere had. He looked shaken."I’ll arrange a vehicle," Larry said, his voice regaining some of its steel, though he wouldn't meet her eyes. "A driver will stay with you, but they will keep their distance. Does

Chapter 8

Megan's povHe didn't look up when she entered. "He’s asleep?""Finally," Megan said, walking closer. She stopped at the edge of the desk. "You’ve been busy."Larry finally looked at her. He looked tired. The crispness of his morning suit was gone; his tie was loosened, and the top button of his shirt was undone. He tapped the folder on top. "Your life in Seattle. You worked at a bakery? And a community center?""I liked the bakery," Megan said, refusing to be ashamed. "The hours worked for childcare. And the people were kind. They didn't ask questions they didn't need the answers to.""You lived in a basement apartment for six months," Larry said, his voice flat. "The heating was unreliable. The neighborhood had a high crime rate.""We were fine, Larry. Liam was happy. He had friends, he had toys, and he had me."Larry stood up, pacing the small space behind his desk. "He could have had all of this. He could have had the best medical care, the best environment, ""He had a mother who

Chapter 9

The morning light in the mansion didn't creep in; it felt like it was granted permission by the heavy automated curtains. Megan woke up to the soft whir of the fabric sliding back, revealing a gray, misty morning. Liam was already awake, sitting at the foot of the bed and quietly lining up his plastic dinosaurs on the duvet."Morning, bug," Megan mumbled, sitting up and rubbing her eyes."Mommy, look. The T. rex is eating the leaf," Liam said, pointing to a very confused-looking carnivore."I think he'd prefer a steak, but let's go with the leaf for now."She felt a strange weight in her chest as she watched him. He looked so comfortable here. That was the danger. Children adapted to luxury with terrifying speed. In a week, he’d forget the sound of the radiator clanking in Seattle; in a month, he’d think everyone had a personal chef named Elena. After dressing in the simplest clothes she had left, a pair of dark jeans and a forest-green sweater, she led Liam down to the breakfast room

Chapter 10

Megan’s POVUpstairs, the silence of the west wing felt different. Before, it had been oppressive; now, it felt like a shield. I locked the heavy oak door behind us and sat on the floor, watching Liam play with his new dinosaur. My hands were shaking.I had spent three years thinking Larry was the only thing I had to fear. I thought he was the monster at the end of the tunnel. But seeing the look on his face when I mentioned the man in the gray jacket, the way his entire body had gone into a state of combat readiness, it forced me to realize I might have been wrong.Larry wasn't just a controlling billionaire. He was a man who lived in a crossfire. And by coming here, I had dragged Liam into that crosshair with him.A soft knock at the door made me jump."It’s me," Larry’s voice came through the wood.I unlocked the door. He was alone, but he looked like he’d aged five years in the last twenty minutes. He stepped inside and closed the door, leaning back against it."We identified him,
