Chapter 21

NoahLyric slow-blinks at me, reaches for the back of her neck, then drops her arm before her fingers touch the rune. “I’m not leaving. I will fight him.”I’d be impressed by her reckless, almost foolish bravery, but I know with chilling certainty that it will also mean her immediate, brutal death. “Bryce commands armies, Lyric. Do you hear me? Multiple Alphas, entire packs, follow his twisted whims. And they are twisted.”She is perfectly calm, a strange, unshakable certainty radiating from her slight frame. “Don’t you command all the wolves?”“I am not the king, little wolf,” I remind her, the words tasting like ash. “My father is, and as such he holds absolute, ancient command over the wolves, not me.”She’s not that easily fooled, and a cold part of me suspects she knows more about The Towers and her terrible place in this world than she’s willing to let on. Her eyes twinkle with a defiant light, and any lingering pain that had shadowed her face simply evaporates. “Yet, you comma

Chapter 22

Lyric“So you mean for me to suffer?” I bite out at Noah.On the first day I met Noah, his eyes were hard, cold, filled with pure hatred and condemnation. Then, it was nothing but pity and a kind of terrible gentle understanding that made my skin crawl - no one ever looked at me that way before - and now… now his gaze is apologetic and filled with the kind of regret that makes me want to tear his eyes out.“The last thing I want is for you to fucking suffer, Lyric.” He lets my hands go, and the sudden loss of a nice, solid warmth leaves me feeling raw. For him, I can see it on his face, the physical pain of breaking that contact is immediate and sharp. “And… I don’t want to suffer either.”“Then break the goddamn bond. Reject me,” I implore him, my voice tight. “No,” he says, his word steadfast and final.“So you are a coward?”“Of the worst kind,” he admits with a ruthless chuckle that makes my skin crawl a little.“You don’t have to be frightened. It will only hurt for a short time

Chapter 23

LyricI watch through my kitchen window as the couple next door load their pram and their yorkie into a car and follow the moving van out of the neighbourhood. Minutes later, a sleek Bentley glides up to the small house. My breath catches. The driver, impeccably dressed, steps out and opens the door for Noah. A different moving van, massive and gleaming, pulls up behind the luxury car. Movers swarm out, unloading pristine, luxurious furniture, still wrapped in plastic, and carrying it inside. It doesn’t work. All that luxury in a neighbourhood like this one seems out of place.Noah abruptly looks up, his gaze finding mine in an instant. He smiles, a slow, genuine curve of his lips, and lifts a hand in a wave. The expensive watch on his wrist flashes in the sunlight. That watch probably cost more than this house and the entire contents within, including the business equipment that’s taking up more space by the day. It’s an easy wall to put up - his wealth compared to my simple life

Chapter 24

NoahI knew shit would go sideways eventually, it’s why I kept the helicopter fueled and ready to go, I just didn’t think it would happen within an hour of me moving in here.It must mean that Bryce has been watching me. We would have known if a wolf entered the neighbourhood. The whole area is guarded by Lycans. He either sent in a very brazen, high-ranking werewolf that is magically hidden, or he turned a rogue Lycan into a spy.My money is on the former. It’s difficult, next to impossible, for a regular wolf to turn a Lycan on their own kind.“Prince,” Weiland says. “Do I have your permission to touch your mate?”He does it only for his own preservation. Conri will kill him if he touches my mate without good cause or our express permission.I glance at Lyric who has planted herself on the floor, legs spread wide, arms crossed over her chest. The mark in her neck still pains her. I can read it in her aura, feel it in her emotions, and see it on her face. She doesn’t want to admit it

Chapter 25

NoahWith Lyric safe, I can hunt.I look at the world through Conri’s wolf eyes, see the heartbeat of a mouse, hear the breathing of a squirrel in the trees, feel the movement of the earth. And I can smell him. He’s further out than I thought he’d be, too much of a fucking coward to actually enter the town. But that’s okay. I don’t need to take the king yet. I can hollow out his defences, take his pawns, kill them one by one until he’s the last player standing on the board. My warriors are around me, stalking through the town. I can sense their presence in the darkness. They are hidden so well that their own mothers wouldn’t be able to find them, but they are here.I round a corner, my every sense laser focused on Bryce, but I don’t miss the warriors that think they have a chance to take me out and launch themselves at me, teeth bared, claws extended. The world is alive around me. My warriors are making quick work of the wolf invaders - the one without the good sense to stay out of a

Chapter 26

LyricWeiland roughly shoves me into a room, slams the door shut and bolts it.I throw myself at the door, putting all my weight behind it, but it’s reinforced. Even in my wolf form, I wouldn’t be able to break through it. “Open up you fucking fucker!” I scream.I am vaguely aware that I’m not coping at all right now. With life, with my circumstances, with being alive.I tried to throw myself out of the helicopter in a sheer fit of rage and fear, after which Weiland cuffed me to the seat. He didn’t even have to use silver, that’s how weak I am.The anger I feel isn’t aimed at Weiland - he’s just doing his job - it’s Noah, my father, Bryce, the high priestess, even Leila. Everyone who came along and took little bits of my life as theirs, making decisions for me as if they cared about me.I’m all alone in this world. I have no one. Not even Star. With each passing day, I feel her less and less. Her presence is diminishing due to the rune, but even if it weren’t she would be happy to be

Chapter 27

LyricI sit on one of the stools next to the kitchen island while Philip, the healer, examines the rune on my neck. My hair, dyed and cut shorter for Noah’s charity event all those months ago, has already started to grow back out and the colour has washed out.My thick blonde mop was in the way, and without asking the prince moved it out of the way so the healer could get a good look at the brand.I’m hyper-aware of Noah’s big hand resting on the top of my head, the heat of his skin bleeding into mine, robbing me of my breath even as I hate it and wish for him to stop.He must know. He must be able to feel my resentment through the bond. I couldn’t even hide it from Bryce, and our bond didn’t come anywhere near this one. It was as fake as my smile when he came into my bed chambers.“It’s much closer to the base of her skull than I would have liked,” Philip says, his gentle fingers tracing the outline of the rune. “And it’s very deep. Almost as if the high priestess who branded her di

Chapter 28

NoahI slam the heavy, silver enforced wooden door shut behind me, the sound echoing hollowly in the vast, silent hall. I don't bother to lock it. There is no need. This place is in the middle of nowhere. My little fortress of solitude, carved into the remote, icy peaks of the mountains. It is far beyond the reach of ordinary men or the werewolves. It is surrounded, not just by wilderness, but by a formidable network of ancient, near-impenetrable magical wards and my most skilled and loyal warriors patrol the grounds twenty-four-seven.Lyric cannot leave, not even if she tries. The moment she crosses the inner perimeter of the estate's grounds, a silent, cascading series of alarms will be triggered, alerting every warrior instantly and bringing them to her side before she’d be able to take a dozen steps. She is safe, confined only by the distance she can walk within the house and the sprawling, carefully tended gardens. I am painfully aware that it’s the same pitiful allowance of fr

Chapter 29

NoahShe blinks at me, almost as if she’s not processing what I’ve said. Her eyes go out of focus and she stares past me into the distance.“Lyric?” I ask. “Are you sure you’re afraid?”She jerks as if someone slapped her, and turns her attention back to me, her eyes laser focused again. “No. I’m… uncertain.”Yeah. I already know. “You… one minute, you treat me like one of your Omega slaves, and the next you’re so kind,” she says and looks down at her hands, stretching her fingers out as if she’s looking for something. “I don’t know what to do with that.”“I know. I am sorry.”Her gaze finds mine again, and my heart stutters in my chest. She is going to be the death of me. I’ve not behaved like this, indecisive and unsure of myself, since I was a very young man. This is why I don’t need that fucking mate bond.“How old are you?” she asks.I’m actually taken aback by her question. Of all the things I thought would come out of her mouth next, those were not the words. I laugh softly a

Chapter 30

LyricHis touch is like a lifeline thrown to a drowning victim. Start grabs a hold of it and roars to the surface. I'm at once overjoyed and dismayed to feel her presence again.Noah smiles as if he knows that she’s awake. He flutters the back of his hand over my cheek and reaching behind my neck, lifting my air away, not stopping until his long fingers find the rune. “What are you doing, Lyric? Are you not answering the call of the mate bond?”I can’t speak. I can’t even think. Because he’s too close. And because he woke Star up without even trying. And I know she will hate me until the day I die if I leave this place. If I leave Noah.“Our animal sides can’t be trusted,” I insist. “We have to fight the bond.”Noah shakes his head. “No. It never works.”“And you know this?” I ask, almost sarcastically. “The man who has never even been mated.”His eyes flash dangerously blue in the rapidly oncoming darkness. “No, I have never been mated before… but I have rejected many mates. I know w
