SARAH PIERCE“Nathaniel,” I smiled, as if his statement wasn't disturbing. “I think you are mistaken.”“I just…”“I know.” I nodded. “You are confused by your memories, aren’t you? Just… Just get some sleep for now. You need the rest.”“Sarah,” he tenderly called, “I am sure about this.”“Drop it, Thaniel. Please.”“I…” His eyes turned distressed. “I’m sorry. Oh God. What am I doing? The past was not friendly to you, but that’s what I’m talking about after days of being apart. I’m so sorry, my love.”“It’s fine.” I shook my head like it didn’t matter. But it mattered. As our eyes connected while we silently shared crooked smiles, I pondered in the depths of my thoughts why he would bother to lie about the past. It’s fine if he remembers some part of it. But tainting the memory of the last day we saw each other with that accident claim is a no-no because I know what I experienced; nothing can erase or distort that story. However, this is a fragile time for Nathaniel, I can’t dwell o

SARAH PIERCEThe last time I was this scared, my wobbly feet were dragging into the hospital while labour pains threatened to tear my body apart. I'm not in labour right now, but I'm weirdly wishing I was. As I walked into the lobby of MODAline, many eyes found me, and some people recognised me. True, over the weekend, the narrative that I killed a man was corrected. The true culprit- my sister- was announced. But the eyes currently glaring at me didn't seem pitiful or understanding. They judged me as if I were the criminal. With a gulp, I tried to ignore everything. I pulled at my suit, my mind seeking solace in thoughts about Nathaniel and Raya. After a simple prayer to the heavens, asking that Raya doesn't have a terrible day at school and that Nathaniel gets better, I stepped into the nearest elevator, which was thankfully empty. Then, I released my breath and assured myself again that everything would be fine. “Ha!” A woman exclaimed when the elevator doors slid open mom

SARAH PIERCE“Do you need a ride home? We live close to each other, anyway,” Mr. Peter offered as I sped past his office, his legs catching up to mine with three steps. “Uhm…”“You’re going to pick up your daughter first, right?”“Mr. Peter.” The joy I felt when I was introduced to the full details of my job was still on my face, so when our eyes made contact, he smiled in return. “I appreciate the offer. But allow me to-”“You’re going to reject me, aren’t you?”“I’m married, Mr. Peter,” I replied easily yet sharply. “That is my answer.”“Silly me,” he quickly masked his disappointment. “I was hoping the gossip on social media was fake. I wanted to believe you’re a single parent like me.”“I was. For a while. Allow me to apologise, Mr. Peter. If I had not taken too long to give you a response…”“No. No.” His hands waved in refusal. “Don’t apologise. My feelings are not your responsibility.”“Hmm.” I forced a smile. “Thank you for the offer.”“It would be nice if you said yes one day

SARAH PIERCE“I’ll join them outside,” Miss Sunshine, Raya’s teacher, informed, and her presence left to meet with others before I could reply.“Raya! Mummy is here. Raya!” My trembling voice continued, screaming like the tens of voices searching for Raya in every place possible. But, when, for the thousandth time now, Raya’s voice failed to respond, my knees failed me. I had to struggle closer to a nearby bench for support, my unsteady eyelids clamping shut while the heat of the lamp standing above scorched my forehead. Then, seconds later, my tears returned. I pinched my eyes to stop them so that I could continue with the search, but they refused to stop this time. Silently, they rushed and forced me to remain on the floor, my eyes watching from a distance as one of my mother’s bodyguards searched the school garden.Seconds later, my phone pinged. It was a message from my mother. The search in a closeby park was futile. Then, another message followed, from the head detective who di

And I’ve counted two dayrise and one nightfall since he stealthily stole me and tossed me into this god forsaken place that lashes me with cold and reeks of different natures of urine. My mind’s disintegrating, my eyes refuse to stay open for long and at this rate, my body might end up stiffening for good. But… Despite these things… My heart has refused to succumb. It is the reason why, after many hours of sitting in this damned room, I’m able to clearly worry about Raya and Nathaniel. The real Nathaniel.Ha.The real Nathaniel… That’s a statement I never imagined myself uttering. It’s even worse that it took me days to realise the man was fake. Just how on earth does he know so much about Nathaniel and me? How long has he been watching us? What is his fucking plan? And who the heck was the person he was speaking to on the phone? His accomplice? I bet my soul that Raya’s with that person. Oh, my baby. She must b
