Elaine’s POVThe infirmary smelled like blood, herbs, old heat, and men trying not to groan too loudly in front of one another. The moment I stepped fully into it, the rest of the castle seemed to fall away for a while. Not because the danger disappeared. Not because Tobias disappeared from my mind. He did not. He never really did. But pain had a way of pulling focus, and there was too much of it in that room for me to stand there drowning in my own thoughts while men bled a few steps away.The space looked hastily made, not planned as a permanent healing wing. Cots lined both sides of a long chamber that might once have been used for storage or supplies. Tables had been dragged in. Bowls of water sat clouded pink from repeated use. Bundles of cloth were stacked in uneven piles.
