Three nights later, Mitch came home from a brutal day at The Rock to find Reena looking fucking stunning. She was wearing a dark green dress that hugged her every curve, and her hair was sleek and shining, tumbling down her back. She was just pulling on a sexy pair of chestnut knee-high boots that added about three inches to her height.“Where are you off to?” he asked. “Dinner with Simon,” she said. He almost growled.“What do you think?” she said. “Do I look OK?”His eyes travelled over her body and he wanted to run his hands up and down her length. He wanted to take that sweet mouth with his own, he wanted to lick her lips and stroke her heat with his tongue. He wanted her in his arms, just for a few minutes. If he had that – just one kiss – he may be able to live with never touching her again for the whole rest of his life. Maybe. “Yeah,” he said, trying to sound casual. “You look nice.”“Thanks.”“So where is he taking you for dinner?”“I don’t know.” She put on her spring coa

Simon watched Mitch come into The Rock, and he grinned in anticipation. He’d dropped Reena off as late as possible, and he was sure that Mitch had had a lousy night, waiting for her to get home. It had actually been an OK evening. Reena was nice, if you liked that kind of thing in a girl, which Simon didn’t, and she was sweet and funny. Again, not qualities that interested him overmuch, but which did make her presence tolerable. He had chatted and acted like he gave a shit when she said something, and so the evening had been a roaring success, at least from her perspective. He was totally sure that when she told her girlfriends about it, she’d call Simon ‘a nice guy’.The only thing was that he hadn’t fucked her, and in fact, he hadn’t even made a move in that direction. He was totally convinced that Reena wasn’t the type to fuck on the first date, and Simon was interested in the long-game. None of this was about her, anyway; it was all about screwing with Mitch Corrigan’s head. And

“With Mitch?” Maggie said. “Huh. Now I never thought of that, but I can see it.”Reena thought of the tall, slim woman with dark hair and bold eyes who had appeared in her kitchen for morning coffee and she shook her head. “No way, guys. I’m not his type, believe me. Not even close.” She grinned at Katie. “You’re much closer to Mitch’s ideal, I promise you.”“Me?” Katie said. “Yep. You should see the woman that he brought home.”“Oh, Reena.” Mia saw the hurt on her friend’s face and squeezed her hand. “He means something, doesn’t he?”Reena looked down as sudden tears blurred her vision. The other women saw her face and all the joking stopped.“Oh, sweetie.” Maggie shook her head. “God, I’m sorry. I didn’t know.”“No, it’s OK. I mean, he’s not interested in me. I’m just being stupid.” She tried to smile. “It’s just a little crush and it’ll pass.”“You sure?” Katie asked.“Sure I’m sure.” Reena raised her chin. “He’s my roommate and my friend, and that’s good enough for me. It’d be go

"I refused to eat my dinner once. It was liver, and it was slimy and gray and cold. He… he force-fed it to me while she held my hands behind my back. Just jammed it down my throat, plugged my nose.” She stared at her hands. “It was the most disgusting thing I’d ever seen or tasted, and I threw it all up right away. Then he got a spoon and he… he…” She stopped.“Reena, no,” Mitch said softly. “Please don’t tell me they made you do that.”She nodded and took a deep breath. “I haven’t eaten meat since.”Mitch reached out and took her small hand in his massive one. “Holy fuck, babe. I’m so, so sorry.”“It’s OK.” She wiped the tears from her eyes, and his gut twisted at her hurt. “It was a long time ago.”He wanted to pull her to him right now, to offer her some comfort. But he resisted it; he knew that if he touched her like that just once, he’d never be able to stop himself from wanting more. Then more. He’d want everything, and she just wasn’t about to give that to someone like him. She

Mitch laughed. He couldn’t believe that he did, but it just burst out of him. She blinked in surprise, and then she smiled too. The tension in the air disappeared, and they suddenly felt like they knew one another again.“OK, Reena. I’ll tell you everything.”She exhaled, relieved. “Sit down. I’ll clean your cuts while you talk.” She ran warm water in the sink, found a fresh face cloth and got a tube of antibiotic cream from the medicine cabinet. Mitch sat back on the edge of the tub and watched her, liking the way her graceful painter's hands moved. She gently cleaned his face with water and a bit of soap and he closed his eyes again, enjoying her touch, relaxing fully for the first time in what felt like years.“The truth is… I’m fighting to pay off a debt." He sighed. "A big one.”“Whose debt?”“My sister’s.”Her hands stilled. “Your sister’s?”“Yeah.” He opened his eyes again. “I don’t want to talk about why she owes money, or to who. I’m serious.”She studied his green eyes, and
