Mariella's POVHurrying out of the convent, I ran into the rain crying. The fact that I had parents I knew nothing about made me sick. I ran over to the roadside, where I could get a cab. I waited for a while, with the plastic bag under my clothes and my arms wrapped around my body for warmth. The road was rather lonely. But I didn't know if it was because this area was normally lonely or because it was getting really late. As I stood there, drenched in rain and shivering like a wet hamster, I heard someone call out to me. “Hey,” the voice called, though it sounded more like “ayy”. I didn't respond immediately. And then the voice came again. “Ayy shawty,” an old car pulled over to where I was.
