I was surprised. What was my mother-in-law, Melissa Potter, talking about? My confusion was soon answered when she set a small stack of receipts on the table."The Christmas dinner tonight costs 652 dollars," she said flatly. "We need to split the bill."They were even splitting the bill for Christmas dinner? Was this family so distant and estranged from each other?Despite feeling a little uncomfortable at that thought, I didn't pay much heed to her words. After all, it wasn't like they would count me in when dividing the bill, right?Besides, the gifts I had bought for everyone already cost tens of thousands of dollars. Going after me for a little over 100 dollars would be strange and ridiculous. We had traveled for hours to get here, and after cooking up a feast, I was starving. Hence, I didn't hesitate and immediately helped myself to the food.Unexpectedly, Melissa smacked my hand away and shrieked, "Have you no self-control? You haven't even paid for the meal yet, you pig!

From what the man revealed, I gleaned that it was Melissa who had sold him the house, and they were even relatives. As I suspected, Melissa had indeed stolen the property deed from my suitcase.I immediately called her. "Who said you could sell my house behind my back?" I demanded.Instead of feeling even the slightest bit guilty, Melissa sounded smug when she answered, clearly delighted that she had gotten one over me. "So what if I sold it? You refused to pay for Christmas dinner and even talked back to me. I simply thought I needed to teach you a lesson!""That's my premarital property! It has nothing to do with the Zink family! What you did is theft! It's illegal!" I screamed back, so incensed that my whole body was shaking."Illegal?" Melissa scoffed and began spouting her twisted logic. "You're my son's wife, which means what is yours is his, and what is his is mine! How is it illegal to sell what belongs to me?"Either way, I already sold the house and received the money

After Melissa finished speaking, she backed away, allowing the men to surge forward. Their hands stretched out to touch my body greedily.Rage and revulsion had me biting down on the leader's wrist before I bit off a chunk of flesh. The man yelled in pain and jerked his hand back. Then, he slapped me with such force that my teeth cut into my lips, causing blood to trickle out.Not satisfied with just that, he straddled my body, wrapped his hand around my throat, and started punching my face.Excruciating pain dominated all my senses while blood stained my vision red.Just as I thought I was about to die, I vaguely heard someone opening the door before the man was shoved off of me."Mom, stop it! How could you do this to Jennifer? She's my wife!"Jennifer! Jennifer! Are you alright?"The leader was so consumed by his rage that he kicked Shawn away without any mercy. "Get lost! How dare she bite off my flesh? I can't call myself a man if I don't kill her today!"Melissa quickly

The police officers began processing the crime scene. One of them noticed the surveillance camera I had previously installed in the corner of the living room and asked for the footage.Everyone fell silent once they had seen the footage.Melissa could be seen barging into the house with the group of men. Everything was recorded—Melissa ordering them to beat me up, the leader forcing me to sign the house sale agreement, the men trying to force themselves on me, and Melissa spitting in my face. And every single word she had said about how she wanted Shawn to marry a new wife could be heard loud and clear."Since we have such concrete evidence, you'll have to come with us."With a blank expression, the police officers turned off the computer before herding Melissa and the other men into the police cars.Melissa was still struggling, her salt and pepper hair flying around wildly as she whipped her head around to yell at Shawn. "Shawn! I'm innocent! You have to save me! Tell the po

Dad busied himself with handling the aftermath of what happened. He contacted the media outlets and kept himself updated on the case's progress. He was determined to make those who hurt me pay the price.Every day, Shawn would come to the villa and camp outside in hopes of seeing me. However, Dad had already given the order that Shawn wasn't allowed to set even one foot into the villa. Shawn could only stand outside the gates, relentlessly calling my name. His voice was full of regret and desperation, yet I never once responded.Mr. Lawson was highly efficient. It didn't take long before he had submitted all the necessary documents and evidence. The court was quick to process the case, what with the surveillance footage showing everything that had happened, the evidence gleaned from the crime scene, the doctor's injuries report, and the statements from those men. Besides that, I had also submitted proof of the purchase of my bag and the damage report. With so much concrete eviden
