I was surprised. What was my mother-in-law, Melissa Potter, talking about?

My confusion was soon answered when she set a small stack of receipts on the table.

"The Christmas dinner tonight costs 652 dollars," she said flatly. "We need to split the bill."

They were even splitting the bill for Christmas dinner? Was this family so distant and estranged from each other?

Despite feeling a little uncomfortable at that thought, I didn't pay much heed to her words. After all, it wasn't like they would count me in when dividing the bill, right?

Besides, the gifts I had bought for everyone already cost tens of thousands of dollars. Going after me for a little over 100 dollars would be strange and ridiculous.

We had traveled for hours to get here, and after cooking up a feast, I was starving. Hence, I didn't hesitate and immediately helped myself to the food.

Unexpectedly, Melissa smacked my hand away and shrieked, "Have you no self-control? You haven't even paid for the meal yet, you pig! Cough up 326, now!"

I thought I had misheard her. "326? I'm supposed to pay half?"

"Yes!" Melissa answered, as though it were the most reasonable thing in the world. "You're an outsider who married into our family. Don't think you can just eat for free!"

The word "outsider" stabbed deep into my heart like a thorn. The gifts I bought had totaled over 40 thousand dollars, an amount enough to pay for dozens of feasts like this.

Yet, she was pestering me for a few hundred dollars and even thought of me as an outsider.

"Mom, since I married your son, that makes me family," I said. "How could you call me an outsider?"

I tried hard to suppress my fury as I added, "Even if we have to split the bill, it should be divided evenly among six people! There's no way I'm paying for half!"

Melissa glared at me, her lips curled into a sneer. "You're paying me for this meal! End of discussion!"

Upon realizing that the situation was turning sour, my husband, Shawn Zink, quickly grabbed my arm and urged softly, "Honey, forget it. It's just 326 dollars, right? I'll pay Mom. Making a scene like this on Christmas will just make us a laughingstock."

"No!" Melissa jumped to her feet, her saliva spraying as she yelled, "Shawn Zink, if you still consider yourself my son, then you're not allowed to pay for her! She has to fork out the money herself!"

She then rushed to the couch where I'd left my handbag and began rummaging through it aggressively.

"Mom! How could you just dig through my bag? What if something inside goes missing?"

I sprang up, barely able to hold back my fury. Still, a hint of anger had seeped into my tone.

Nonetheless, Melissa didn't stop. She even went as far as to dump everything in my bag onto the ground, screaming, "Well, it's your own fault for refusing to pay! So what's wrong with me getting the money myself?"

I later learned that Shawn had a hard time after that, especially at work. His colleagues kept talking about him behind his back, calling him a coward and a mama's boy. It didn't take long before he resigned from that job.He went to visit Melissa in prison a few times. Every single time, she would berate him relentlessly and call him useless for being unable to rein in his wife or save his mother. As for his father and siblings, they thought of him as a shame to the family and cut off all ties with him. They even refused to let him return home. All I had to say to that was that cruelty and wickedness ran in that family.Since the leader of those men was the son of Melissa's relative, that family was utterly furious at his imprisonment. They sought out Shawn and broke his leg.Shawn tried to win me back. Day after day, he would wait outside my company building for me, his broken leg dragging behind him. He would give me flowers or buy breakfast for me, but I always ignored him.

Dad busied himself with handling the aftermath of what happened. He contacted the media outlets and kept himself updated on the case's progress. He was determined to make those who hurt me pay the price.Every day, Shawn would come to the villa and camp outside in hopes of seeing me. However, Dad had already given the order that Shawn wasn't allowed to set even one foot into the villa. Shawn could only stand outside the gates, relentlessly calling my name. His voice was full of regret and desperation, yet I never once responded.Mr. Lawson was highly efficient. It didn't take long before he had submitted all the necessary documents and evidence. The court was quick to process the case, what with the surveillance footage showing everything that had happened, the evidence gleaned from the crime scene, the doctor's injuries report, and the statements from those men. Besides that, I had also submitted proof of the purchase of my bag and the damage report. With so much concrete eviden

After hanging up, Dad pinned Shawn with a frosty glare."Shawn Zink, from now on, you are no longer married to my daughter. My poor Jennifer can't handle any more torture from your family, nor does she deserve it."Shawn's face fell as he collapsed to his knees with a thud. Hands clutching tightly at the hem of my pants, he pleaded with me in a voice thick with tears, "Jennifer, I know I was wrong! I genuinely know my mistake now! Please give me another chance."I promise to protect you better from now on, and I won't let my mom hurt you again! So please, don't divorce me! I can't live without you!"I instinctively took a step back to avoid him. Just the thought of his touch was enough to make my stomach churn. "It's too late, Shawn," I said flatly. "Where were you when your mom had those men beating the living daylights out of me? When they tore at my clothes because she wanted them to utterly ruin me?"You were standing off to the side, hesitating, too scared to step forward a

The police officers began processing the crime scene. One of them noticed the surveillance camera I had previously installed in the corner of the living room and asked for the footage.Everyone fell silent once they had seen the footage.Melissa could be seen barging into the house with the group of men. Everything was recorded—Melissa ordering them to beat me up, the leader forcing me to sign the house sale agreement, the men trying to force themselves on me, and Melissa spitting in my face. And every single word she had said about how she wanted Shawn to marry a new wife could be heard loud and clear."Since we have such concrete evidence, you'll have to come with us."With a blank expression, the police officers turned off the computer before herding Melissa and the other men into the police cars.Melissa was still struggling, her salt and pepper hair flying around wildly as she whipped her head around to yell at Shawn. "Shawn! I'm innocent! You have to save me! Tell the po

Mom took off her cashmere coat and wrapped it tightly around me. Even though the material was incredibly soft, that still didn't stop my body from shaking uncontrollably. Every inch of my skin screamed in pain.Seconds later, Dad came charging into the house as well. When he saw me curled up on the floor—clothes torn, body covered in wounds—his eyes turned red with rage. Gone was his usual gentle demeanor as he snatched up the solid wood coat rack by the door and swung it at the men."You animals! If anything happens to my daughter, I'll make sure you all pay dearly!"The coat rack cut through the air with a sharp whistle and struck them with dull thumps.Caught off guard, the men had no time to react and could only yelp at the painful blows. The leader tried to fight back, but the police were already swarming forward to slap cuffs onto their wrists. In no time at all, all my assailants had been arrested.Melissa's knees went weak before she slumped to the floor on her back. S

After Melissa finished speaking, she backed away, allowing the men to surge forward. Their hands stretched out to touch my body greedily.Rage and revulsion had me biting down on the leader's wrist before I bit off a chunk of flesh. The man yelled in pain and jerked his hand back. Then, he slapped me with such force that my teeth cut into my lips, causing blood to trickle out.Not satisfied with just that, he straddled my body, wrapped his hand around my throat, and started punching my face.Excruciating pain dominated all my senses while blood stained my vision red.Just as I thought I was about to die, I vaguely heard someone opening the door before the man was shoved off of me."Mom, stop it! How could you do this to Jennifer? She's my wife!"Jennifer! Jennifer! Are you alright?"The leader was so consumed by his rage that he kicked Shawn away without any mercy. "Get lost! How dare she bite off my flesh? I can't call myself a man if I don't kill her today!"Melissa quickly
