Chapter 1

A new message popped up on my screen. I opened it and saw a payroll list. "This month's salaries: Technical Director–10,000. Marketing Assistant–5,600. Receptionist–2,000..."Timmy Sunderland in Finance instantly deleted the text, but I had already seen my salary. It was also ten thousand dollars a month, but...Most of it had been deducted and given to Timmy!Anger surged through me as my whole body started to shake.Timmy sent another message right away. "Sent by mistake, please ignore!"How was I supposed to ignore that?I rushed straight to my boss, Jessica White's office, and pushed open the door. "Ms. White, I want an explanation about my pay.""Don't you know you are supposed to knock before you come in? Don't treat the company as your own apartment. Just because you're a senior employee here, it doesn't mean you can do whatever you want! I can still fire you at any time!"I stepped back and knocked on the door a few times."Ms. White, can I come in now? Why am I only

Later at night, Jessica took Timmy and me to meet Mr. Newton from Victoria Holdings to discuss a deal. Mr. Newton was generous with money, but he was famous for being hard to please."Ms. White, your company doesn't really meet my investment standards. Still, I do enjoy having some fun. If you can give me a little entertainment, I... Can think about it," Mr. Newton said."What kind of entertainment do you have in mind?" Jessica asked as she smiled at him and buttered him up."Tell the person next to you to get down on his knees and bark like a dog. I'll give you one million for each bark," Mr. Newton said as he gave Timmy and me a malicious look.Jessica did not even hesitate as she looked straight at me. "Claude, what are you waiting for?""I can't do that," I said."If she tells you to do something, you do it. Or do you want to leave this company already?" Timmy cut in.I ignored Timmy.Meanwhile, Jessica grew anxious. "Claude, this investment from Mr. Newton is crucial for o

I was shaking in front of all my colleagues in the conference room as I stammered, "Ms. White... Last night... I was...""Enough! This company won't tolerate such horrendous behavior! Don't bring your filthy private life into the company! I'm warning you, if I ever catch you again, you're out!"Jessica leaned in, jabbing a finger into my forehead. I was still in shock and barely felt the pain."I always try to be fair with rewards and punishments. I never play favorites just because someone has been with the company for years! Claude's actions are unethical and severely affect the company. I'm docking three months of his salary," Jessica said as she let out a cold snort.I felt like I had been jolted as my face went pale, but her next words chilled me even more. It's a good thing that Timmy reported this, so I'm promoting him to finance manager from today. His monthly salary is raised by 1,000.""Thank you, Ms. White. I'll work even harder for the company." Timmy grinned in satisf

Grandsun Group?Wasn't that the company whose boss had asked me again and again to go work at her place?"I've never thought about doing that," I said when Jessica mentioned my trying to squeeze the company of its funds."Ha! I know exactly what you're thinking! I'll spell it out for you today! I'll never give you a chance! Your feelings for me are worthless to me!" Jessica's eyes were full of open disdain."You really mean that?" My eyes slowly turned red as I asked, unwilling to accept it."Take a good look at yourself. You're broke and pathetic, and you make me sick. You will never be the man that I want!" Jessica declared. At that moment, I gave up completely. The feelings I had held for Jessica for a decade finally vanished without a trace. I then said, "Fine. Then I quit.""If you want to leave, leave right now! Do you think I'm scared of you? Once you walk out that door, never come back! Do not come begging me later, and I'll never give you a second chance!""Fine." My e

"Who's making all this commotion in the director's office?" My personal assistant, William Wright, rushed in when he heard the noise and yelled at Jessica and Timmy, his expression dark. Then he turned and addressed me respectfully, "Mr. Arkwright..."Jessica and Timmy both froze, their expressions twisting.A moment later, they put their mean expressions back on."You've really put a lot of effort into ruining this deal for us! Do you think someone like you can be the director? Do you even know your own place anymore? You are not even worthy enough to carry his shoes for him.""Ms. White, Claude must be in this together with him if you ask me. He just wants to see you. He's still after you," Timothy said.I let out a short laugh. I seriously didn't understand what was in their brains."Enough! How dare you speak to the director like that?!" William yelled again."Claude, get this man out of here with you right now, or I'll call the police!" Jessica yelled."Ms. White, I'll ca

As soon as Cecilia and I stepped out of the company building that evening, Jessica blocked our way. "Ms. Weaver, regarding that investment in my company, could you please reconsider it?""I have already given Claude full authority over this matter, so it's up to him," Cecilia said with an expressionless face."How can you entrust something so important to him?! Claude is someone who can't separate work from his personal feelings! Because... He used to like me, and I never gave him a chance, and now he is deliberately ruining me!""Then what do you think I should do?" Cecilia frowned."You should fire him immediately, then approve the investment in my company," Jessica said as she shot me a glare, the smugness in her eyes plain to see.Cecilia said nothing and simply chuckled.Jesica then continued, "Ms. Weaver, Claude has worked at my company for a decade, and I know him inside and out! He doesn't have the slightest capabilities, and I only kept him with me all this time out of g

"Claude, it was my fault in the past, and I'm sorry! I know you're the one who understands me the most! I really can't lose this company! Please, I'm begging you!" Jessica suddenly dropped to her knees and grabbed my leg, pleading desperately."Just leave," My voice stayed cold as Cecilia and I kept walking."You two shameless people won't end well! Cecilia, you're nothing but a witch, and you and that dog Claude are a perfect match! A witch with a dog!" Jessica turned on us in an instant."I'll make you pay!" She suddenly charged at us from behind, wanting to grab Cecilia's hair. However, all her hand managed to grab was air because I caught her arm in time.Slap!I slapped her hard across the face."If you try to touch Cecilia again, I won't show you any mercy! It won't be this simple if you do this again next time!" I looked at Jessica with a piercing look.I could see a gleam of fear in her eyes, but she still would not back down. "You cheaters! You gigolo and harlot! You th

I was invited to the year-end party hosted by a partner company. As soon as I reached the entrance of the banquet hall, I saw the last person I wanted to see.Timmy Sunderland. He was holding a thick stack of papers and handing them out one by one to the guests going in and out. When I walked past him, he did not even look up as he handed me a sheet. "Hello, if your company has any open positions, please consider me first. This is my resume."Timmy met my eyes, and the smile on his face froze. I pretended not to see him and walked straight past him through the doors."Claude, wait a second, I need to talk to you," Timmy called out.I did not stop walking."Claude, I've been looking for a job recently. Can you help me?" Timmy asked with a forced smile."I don't know you," I said."How can you say that? We used to work at the same company. You'll give me a hand just for that, right?" Timmy forced a smile."What makes you think I would help you?" I let out a cold chuckle."I'm

Sometime later, Mr. Paine from Whitewind Group invited Cecilia and me to dinner to discuss a partnership."I have always thought you were quite the outstanding man, Mr. Arkwright. Your talent was being wasted when you were working with Jessica. Ms. Weaver has such good eyes and can recognize true talent!""You flatter me, Mr. Paine.""Since we're having such a happy occasion today, we must have a drink. Come, bring the wine." Mr. Paine laughed heartily.Several waiters pushed the door open and came in carrying drinks.I met the eyes of one of them, and we both froze.Jessica!"Ms. White, what are you doing here? Are you trying to experience life as an ordinary nine-to-five worker?" Mr. Paine recognized Jessica.Jessica's face turned pale, but she quickly turned to Mr. Paine with a practiced smile. "Since we are all old acquaintances, may I ask you to order a few more bottles of wine?""To think that the owner of a company could fall from grace like this... Let's see, as long a

Under my leadership, the Grandsun Group was thriving, and its performance was soaring.Cecilia and I decided to branch out into other lines of business, and we opened several new companies in quick succession, with me fully in charge.I needed to recruit a large number of employees, but I completely banned hiring through personal connections and refused to let anyone use their position for private gain. So, I decided to conduct all the interviews myself."Mr. Claude, these are the files for all the candidates for the finance director position," William said.I flipped through the documents carefully and suddenly saw the name 'Timmy Sunderland' on the list. So, he wanted to come for an interview? I let out a cold laugh and decided to give him a proper one."Tell everyone to come in.""I know the boss here. All of you, move aside," Timmy shoved everyone away and walked into the room before the door was even fully opened."Claude, it really is you! None of you needs to stay for the
